Hey guys I am getting back into IL-2 again (never really got into it) and I want to make sure I have the best settings to give this thing a go.

1. I downloaded 408m and 409m. I'm assuming that should bring me up to the latest.

2. Are there any terrain or scenery upgrades?

3. I'm running an ATI 5850 at 1920x1200. Anything special I need to know about?

4. Me and a friend are going to fly co-op so we can be in the same plane online. Anything special we need to do to make this work?

5. Are there any must have mods we need to know about?

6. How many people are flying this online today? Is it still pretty easy to get into a populated server?

7. What is the advantage of the dedicated server? Can we fly a continuous campaign with it?

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to get my head around this sim.

For mods, get Ultrapack. It improves terrain and plane textures and adds a lot of cool maps and planes. We can't give you a link, just google it. I think it's on version 2.1 now.

I suggest trying Il2 for a few weeks without the mods, this way you can get used to the stock game and how to use it, then you can dive into the mods and you'll have a better understanding of what the mods are or are not doing for you. If you need help with graphics settings etc feel free to post int he community help section. Since this is the official site for Il2 and the mods are unofficial we cannot offer support or links to mods.

First, welcome, or welcome back, whichever it may be.

Second, if you're interested in more planes than you could imagine, look up "SAS1946". Bear in mind that this started as a strictly offline mod site. There are various configurations that have now been adopted as "standard" for online use, but you have to be careful to get the right servers and use an install that is strictly those mods only. As far as I can tell, all of those mods work over UltraPack 2.1, which is how I run it.

Third, if you do get into modding, a clean install to use as a copy/paste backup is a must. I have three or four different installs of IL-2 alone on my computer. It eats space, but saves time when, as invariably will happen, a mod install goes screwy and I loose track of exactly what I've done.

As for out of the box online flying, there's a group here that operates every weekend. Here's the link: UbiZoo (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2601013236/m/8911098738/p/12).
