View Full Version : bombers actually attack realistically or maybe... not!

Just had a mission where German Bombers attacked our airfield at 3:00 am. No NAV lights anywhere. First I saw them was when the search lights popped up.

I shot 2 down and chased a 3rd well into enemy territory, then returned to base. The whole time they didn`t switch on their NAV lights (for those who don`t know, AI bombers would immediately swith on their NAV lights after dropping bombs and turning for home).

I also returned to base to find the search lights tracking a bomber that was flying in circles. I noticed it`s pilot was dead and the others had jumped, but it was nice to see the lights still tracking it. Interestingly, the AA was not firing at it; not sure if this was a bug or cos the AA may have been destroyed earlier.

Ah, one last thing. 3 at night is NOT very dark at all. Perhaps a compromise for night fighting?

EDIT: See last post, I could be wrong. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Which map were you on, Seafire? Up in the extreme ends of the globe there isn't a lot of dark to be had depending on the season.

I use the ATI hotkeys thing for in-game gamma/contrast control. Useful to have, colour profiles in games always seem to get reset for me for some reason from the control panel. CTRL-ALT-F1-F4 for gamma and contrast up/down serves pretty well.

@ clint-ruin : This is on the Smolensk map.
@ SkyPiggies: This was a scamble mission against German bombers attacking our airfield. It`s a generated one in the offline campaign.
@Pingu: Hi, Pingu. Sorry, I`ve not called, but I`ve had a few things jump at me lately. Will contact you.

The AI bomber nav-light thing was always an irritation to me. This is just one mission, but it really appears that those Nav lights stay off with enemy bombers - wisdom at last!

This looks like another 'Wow let's celebrate a new feature that had already been there before' empty propaganda thread. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't see any change compared to 3.0. Level bombers switch off their nav lights when they recognize a target assigned to them through the 'Set' feature. That happens maybe 3 km outside of the target, and as soon as they've dropped their bombs they switch them on again. That's almost nothing compared to the long flight times, and it had already been that way in 3.0.

AI fighter bombers will switch off their nav lights in a ground attack even without a specific target assigned to them. Fighters will switch them off when they see an enemy aircraft (from 7 km).

Nav lights still are annoying in 3.03. Bombers don't switch them off in enemy territory, not even when they're under attack.

I guess you were attacked by Ju-88s that don't have any nav lights modelled. Nothing there to switch off.

ok, you may be right there. They weren`t He111s, so it`s possible they`re JU88s (didn`t know they had no nav lights). I did have a very slight suspicion and this is why I didn`t post a `thankyou` to Oleg just in case.

Well, I freely admit it if I was wrong. Normally I`d test these things more thoroughly, but VERY busy lately.

There you go.

And by the way less of the c r a p attitude from you my lad, the propaganda`s all in YOUR mind.

I don't know if this was there already in older patches, but I noticed the AI being more selective this time around. They will actually go after wingmen instead of leaders. Whereas before they are only focused on the leader and would even fly beside the wingman in pursuit.

Now all we need are bombers that dont try to dogfight http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif
