I just read over at Tom's Hardware (http://www20.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20041220_114724.html) that EA has bought almost a 20% share in UbiSoft. Not cool, not cool at ALL EA - ya little punks!

Oh no http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. My respect for EA is drastically declining.

They better not get any sway in Chaos Theory. That's all Ubi needs is EA making a mess of things.

It's just shares that they are purchasing. Although I am not an expert, I don't believe a 20% stake in a company automatically allows shareholders to get their fingers dirty in the company's day to day operations.

yes it does. They now own the second largest piece of UBI. The only larger piece is a 22.8% piece owned by the guillemot family, who are the founders of UBI I believe.

And heres their feelings on this matter.

quote:
Guillemot's e-mail differed sharply with statements an Ubisoft rep gave Reuters. The spokesman told the news service that "Pending further information, we consider this operation as hostile." He added, "We think this operation is aimed at securing the studios of Ubisoft that are ready to face the next generation of gaming consoles."

I was pretty shocked when I read the news as well!! According to Rhoulette who actually works at Ubisoft as a Community Manager....

"They can't buy more than 20% without board approval so nothing's happening immediately; 20% of the stocks doesn't mean they get to have any decision making power, they're just going to benefit from our success." It is also important to remember that Ubisoft is a French owned company.

Honestly, it is a huge complement to Ubisoft. Not that I am partial or anything http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well good thing they only purchased 19.9%

EDIT: BTW everything I have read from the news sources goes against what you just posted from rhoulette, this is supposedly a large enough piece (2nd biggest afterall) that they could have an influence. Though it must be noted they claim to have no interest in making those type of decisions and this was a purely financial move. Also the largest owners are considering this a hostile act..........
