View Full Version : Am I the only one who likes the P-39?

I have recently started trying other planes to try out and see how they do against the AI on my "out of the box" version of PF. One of the planes that I really taken a liking to is the P-39. At low altitude its maneuverability is very good; I'd get into a tussle with a Zero with it at low altitude and not worry too much about getting smoked. Speed is not bad at low altitude where the Allison V-12 is at its prime performance. I really like watching large chunks of airplane tear off of your opponent when you drill him with the cannon.

I think that the '39 is a viable plane at low/medium altitude; am I the only one?

I adore the P-39. I don't know why. Don't ask.

P-39 is my nr1 fav plane N1 and Q1 as fav models, i do not pay any real attention to the others apart from the Q10.

P-63 is also a nice ride but i favour the '39..
In the old Il2 Sturmovik i could really dish out damage in low alt airquake servers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif And it is far from a n00b plane

Yeah, but by the looks of it, we could use it packed with something "unmentionable" and get stoned to the bejeesus. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

P39-Q1 for me. I love the wing guns, as they help me line up the cannon better than just nose MGs. It turns well and is a decent zoom climber. My fav part though is the tricycle gear. For me, by far, the easiest type of gear to land on.

Just touch the ground with the two back wheels first, "place" the nose wheel down and just lay on the brakes, keeping it straight with rudder. A quick stopper that allows one to quickly stop and Refly without getting vulched, lol. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

P-39D2 is the best of the 39s IMHO, agile but faster than even the Q-10.

Wow...glad that I'm not the only one who enjoys the '39. I agree that it most certainly is not a noob plane.....I've smashed up more then a couple learning how to fly it. I've gotten good enough to take one 4 Zeros down in the dirt and take them down. Of course this is against the AI, so taking on a real person will be a completely different ball game. Thanks for all the input.

By the way is there any one else who also flys the SBD and has some experience in Dive bombing? I could use some tips on accuracy.

I like the look of the P-39 but every time I fly it, I usually end up in a flat spin as the rudder seems pretty inefective on it.

Best bit about it though, in the weapons load-out "Extra Ammunition"............dont see that very often.

P39N1 has always been one of my favorite planes.

Most underated plane of WW2.

I like that plane. From the day I played CFS2, I downloaded some stuff needed (few files and graphics needed for cockpit since it wasn't flyable by default and I like to fly it was one of my favs).

And that wasn't changed since IL-2 Demo http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Do you fly online (hyperlobby)? Im running a New Coop tonight with SBD's in, their one of my fave planes after the Focke Wolfe and Val. Its a US carrier borne attack on Okinawa, involving hellcats and corsairs too. Look out for me on there as 443rdDanjama.

Good news Dan, if I drop by at hyperlobby tonite I'll try to join http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

@ Opie-won I will give you one short advice; if you are in dive-bomb avoid using rudder. Using rudder will greatly lower your bomb run efficiency, because it disrupts aim easily.

Why does that seem strange to me, that a 1941 P-39-D2 is faster than a Q1 or Q10? What is different about it and why in God's name would they make anymore P-39s if that one was so good?!? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

The D2's zoom climb seems quite over-modelled and E retention kind of spooky. It outperforms all P-39s at the moment.

The D2 is the pick of the litter. I don't know why, but about 160 lend lease P-39s that were originally supposed to end up in England were produced with uprated engines that could get almost 1325 horse. All other P-39s were powered by engines that only got about 1200 HP. According to the aircraft viewer, the D2 in game has 1590 HP which seems extreme and inconsistent with the info I've seen.

One can only imagine how the P-39 would have performed with a Merlin stuffed into the Engine Bay.

Thanks for the help on the Dive Bombing question...so you would roll a little either way to stay lined up?

I am stillworking on my 'puter to get it back online....is pretty old (900mhz Processor, Windows 98, and still have TM Attack Throttle.)I need to get a Recovery Disk or a Windows start-up disk so I can get the Modem stuff back onto it.

Yes using a little aileron to adjust works for me, but by far the best results are achieved if your aircraft is steady (you are using only elevator to 'track down' the target). For that to achieve you must have enough altitude otherwise you will be forced to release ordnance before that ideal moment.

Generally best results are achieved from longer dives (higher alts), you can release your bombs from 2k if you have adjusted everything and you are aiming on stationery target. Good thing about ships is that they are not evading. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
