View Full Version : Romanian AI

I just started a new campaign, and am currently flying Hurricanes with the Romanian airforce in the Crimea. 5 missions into this campaign, I have come to a (perhaps premature) conclusion:

Romanian pilots, or at least Romanian AI, are maniacs.

The AI is always pulling crazy antics in combat, cutting each other off, flying tight formations and engaging in head-ons like I have never seen before (and I have played a LOT of other campaigns). While my Romanian colleagues have pulled off some pretty spectaular kills, they also seem to be crashing into each other at an alarming rate, especially during combat but also while preparing to land (the close calls I have had while landing in this campaign... damn!). They also tend to shoot each other down more often than I have noticed in other campaigns. In fact, more than 50% of our (heavy) casualties so far have been the result of collisions or friendly fire.

I've spent some time in the southeast Europe, and I know that Romanians are considered a somewhat "passionate" people (ahem). Is this kind of flying intended to represent Romanian flying attitudes? I'm half convinced that the Romanian AI is trying to represent this... the other half of me thinks that the Romanian AI pilots are simply just of poorer quality than what I am used to, and that explains it.

Can anyone offer any insight into this? I'm quite curious...

AI is the same for all nations, but the AI skill level may be at a different setting than you've had in other campaigns.

Further, while FB's AI is very good compared to some other games, they're fairly limited (compared to humans) in terms of intelligence and flexibility. As a result of differing aircraft characteristics, there are some aircraft that they just don't do well in at certain skill levels.

What version are you playing? Sounds like 1.22 or less. Install AEP, for a start AI formation spacing has been spaced out a little more.

SeaFireLIV - I have AEP installed. Otherwise, I couldn't be playing a Romanian campaign. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Tully - thanks for the info. I'm a bit surprised to read that the AI is the same for all nations, because I certainly (or at least I thought) I could see the difference when I was playing between the Germans or the Soviets, for example (ie, the germans seemed a whole lot better). Or is that a reference to the AI skill level (which I haven't played with consciously).

Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Hey CountFunk, I agree 100%!!! For a couple reasons...
1) My girl friend is Romanian (I'm an American or an 'Ami' as she says)... she is very wild and unpredictable! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I really think it's in their blood! Vlad the "Impailer" (the inspiration for Count Dracula the Vampire!!) is their national hero... so that tells you something! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
2) When I was in the Air Force (pre-1991) they used to tell us NOT to get shot down over Romania if we could help it!! They said that the Romanian Army was made up of ruthless and very aggressive warriors! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

But seriously, I have noticed a BIG diference in how the Romanian wingmen of mine react as compared to the Finnish or Hungarian flyers. And my girlfriend confirms that the Romanian AI is modeled correctly! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
cheers, http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Although, now that I think about it, I just installed Il2 Stab 4.0, to shorten the length of campaigns slightly, although everything else I left at "default". Any idea if that would effect the AI?

Gotta wonder about that "ruthless and very aggressive" part...back in 1990 most soldiers were more interested in bumming my cigarettes than putting a hole in me.

The driving in Bucharest mirrors the AI behavior, though. I remember sitting in a traffic jam on Magheru (of course, when is there NOT a traffic jam on Magheru?) when my car started to move forward into the car in front of me. I couldn't figure out at first what was going on, then I looked in my rearview and saw the grill of a Lincoln Intimidator, er Navigator, right on my bumper: the driver of that behemoth hadn't even seen my Fiat Punto and was trying to inch up behind what he thought was the car in front of him--which was actually the car in front of me! I had to jump out of the Punto for him to recognize I was there. He wasn't the least bit fazed, either: he looked at me with eyebrows slightly raised above his designer shades, stood up a bit in his seat, saw my car, and nodded. That was it. No "I'm sorry," no "Bai, omule, nici nu te-am vazut," nothing. I inched into the lane to my right after that just to avoid this guy.

It is the same for all nations, but their behaviour does change a bit depending on skill settings, what plane they're flying, what they're attacking, what altitude and speed they're at, what munitions load they're carrying and what sort of mission & waypoint goals they've been set.

Romanian AI is crazy?
Hmmmm... I have thought they behave like ther rest of AI,maybe I'm too used with "them". They steal a kill, they ram each other , just like any other AI.

@CraigNT:
Back in 90's (when I was in the army) , you could safely land since you Amies & Brits never carry the most important piece from the survival kit : Romanian plum/fruits brandy (which we called tuica). I remember Brits coming for an exercise with us and they stopped every darn hour for 10 minutes on our way to the top for a snack http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. As for us, the brandy was passed to everyone, enough food to keep us in shape http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Who says Romania is unfriendly for "Ami's" and Brits must be either fool , either doesn't know the history of these ppl and how long they waited for them. Too bad my grandpa didn't seen them coming, was dying 10 years before. But this is another story.
Hey Tully, when do we get a PL again? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

Hey Bula- that story is VERY funny! That must've been pretty exciting to see that huge vehicle in your mirror pushing your car down the road!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif BTW do you know any "Bula" jokes? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

@Zayets- I've had a chance to taste tuica from my girlfriend and it sure was fine! I think I might suggest to the US armed forces that they take a tip from their newest NATO ally and start distributing it!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Sorry your grandpa didn't live to see this day... must be very exciting to live in the new democracy. May your family live in peace and prosperity...

One thing I've found from the one Romanian that's in my life now is that there is a great love for life in the people from your country!

cheers to all, http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
