A very early early warning system. The caption from the (blog) site reads "Japan circa 1930s old school acoustic locators listening for enemy aircraft..." I have no more info, so if anyone does they are welcome....

It's a fantastic picture http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif:

In the south of England you can find large, curved concerete structures. These are the remains of early 1930s parabolic acoustic collectors for early warning of air attack. They are mostly pointing at France :-)

Sorry, Major_Setback, but I just can't help thinking that the Japanese, not being content with a Naval arms race in the Pacific, were actually trying to start a race they were sure they could win-a giant saxaphone race.

That picture is just begging for a funny caption contest.

Are the Japanese devices the inspiration for 'Cloudbusting' by Kate Bush?

"Luckily over the years Japanese technological advances allowed in-ear hearing aids to be much minutarised from these 1937 prototypes."

or

"So you say Ms. Kate Bush come 10am with Mr. Donald Sutherland to do video shoot for new single?"

or

"Acoustic guitar and introducing Spanish guitar.

Two slightly distorted guitars.

And now big f****ing saxophone things"

or

"The equipment for the new crack Austrian mobile alpen horn division is completed on time."

No, that's what the cloud buster is supposed to do, only the government didn't like it and Donald Sutherland had to be put in prison to be later rescued by his son Jack Bauer or something like that.

I think this has been posted before, but as it's on topic:

They sort of worked. The giant concrete ones in England could detect planes at nearly 20-25 miles. But the problem was that the 'data' travelled only at the speed of sound. And by the time the 'information' in the 'data packets' got to the sound locater that target aircraft that were detected would have moved on in the amount of time it took to detect them.

"During the development period or sound detection . aircraft speeds gradually increased By the mid 1930's monoplane fighters and bombers were being designed and built having speeds of up to 300 mph - an appreciable fraction of the speed of sound. Consequently the (' 20 to 25 mile maximum warning time of the 200 ft mirrors could provide a warning time of only 3 minutes."

Radar came on line soon after and they were relegated to operations designed to disguise the development and reliance of Radar.

The Brits had smaller horn-type listening devices they used in WWI.
You can get a view of those as used in the movie "Hell's Angels".
