but i'm sure its nothing new to some of you guys out there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I came across what seems to be a "convoy" of warships,I wasnt able to catch up with the convoy to see what warships there was in that convoy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

What is it that I missed?...why would so many warships have sailed together?..Have anyone seen such a warship convoy in the game?

check it out:

They are called task forces (TF) and most of the time they have juicy targets like carriers, cruisers, small stuff like that...

If they were traveling really fast, then they were probably a bunch of Destoyers only. If they were traveling at a medium speed (at which you would more than likely be able to catch up too), then they would be the more juicy targets as mentioned above. Carriers and Battleships can't outrun small subs when the sub is surfaced.

I recently ran into a Task Force of Destoyers, and they were traveling at a pretty healthy pace. If you do enter the chase, make sure that you tell your helmsman to travel no the surface without recharging your batteries at the same time. He will automatically travel on the surface while recharging the battery, and this will drain power out of you motors and rob you of a few knots.

My fifty cents. . .it looks like a task force to me. They're likely patroling the shipping lanes responding to contact reports. . .much like we are. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's hard to say what it was. A few patrols back (early 1941), I decided to probe the Gibralter area. During a routine hydrophone check I picked up DD/escort sounds and made a surface run to close. Got a ship spotted and a TF message. Ship was a DD. I was able to get into position but all I ever saw was 3 DD's.

In a previous career I encountered another all DD task force - 4 ships I think - NW of Ireland. Thus far, I've only seen one TF that had a BB in it. That was during very bad weather. I made a laborious approach via hydrophone and surface sprints and figured I was finally in position. First a DD went past at very close range and I realized that I was too close to the path of whatever was coming. As I tried to correct the prow of a large ship emerged from a fog bank. It was a Revenge-class BB. By the time I got the torpedo settings for a spread-of-four, it was 200 meters away. I went emergency reverse and hard starboard rudder to try and at least get a shot at its stern. I ended up making a bad angle shot as it receded into the mists at around 350 meters. Four torps and bupkes. Moments later another DD came steaming by. I could probably have hit it but I had no torps loaded in my bow tubes.

That was the only true task force I've seen thus far.

Both Carriers and Battleships are faster then Uboats, infact most things on the ocean are lol.

Cept maybe a tin can with some spam in that someone threw overboard!

Thats wether the uboat is surfaced or not, still doesnt stand a chance of catching either.

Your only hope is to be infront of it or far enough away and to the front that you can position yourself to get infront. Do all this without being spotted and you are a hero http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Then you just have to sink one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

BS, BBs and especially CVs would usually cruise around 18-22 knots and could go up to 30 for some of the modern fast CVs and BBs. Much faster than a surfaced u-boat. You have to be lucky and be in a position in front of their path to catch them.

How the heck do you travel on the surface without charging batteries?

Hi Praetorian_,

€œHow the heck do you travel on the surface without charging batteries?€

Click on the €œOrders€ button on the engineer, and select the one that says something like €" €œRun Engines Normally€ (or such-like, sorry I don€t recall at this moment exactly how it€s phrased: you can€t miss it tho€ €" you€ll see it).

The €˜Battery€ icon will change from (€˜selected€) yellow, to (€˜de-selected€) white.

Best, & happy hunting!

I've come across, this type of TF before on several occassions.

Only once have I been close enough,to recognise them, and then it was in early 45.This TF was travelling at 30knts and comprised of all DD's.
I was stood off from them at about 4k due north, thinking they were after me.
Four of them peeled off to the south a short distance, then started depth charging in a circle, the three others cut across the circle dcing.
I just thought that the AI had been released from the funny farm,or,maybe they were a Hunter group,I might well be wrong in the latter assumption as I don't know if they are configured into the game.

Standard proplulsion is what it's called. It'll be one of the pictures that looks like a propeller.
Even the World War I era battleships were capable of doing 21-22 kts. With 2 engine upgrades done on a Type VIIb U-Boat, the best I have ever done on the surface is 20kts. I have gotten close enough to take some longe range shots at a task force of 3 battleships crusing in single file, but if memory serves, they were doing 22kts. The torpedoes simply ran out of power/steam before they hit.

What was the main purpose of the task forces in WW2? was their main purpose to seek out u-boats?

Yes...The US Navy developed what was known as "hunter-killer" groups that specifically targeted U-boats. They got their intel using Enigma decrypts. Priorities would be against the Milchcows (supply U-boats) and the standard U-boats. Some of them had small jeep carriers attached. U-505 was captured by one such group.
