(Other than the P51's) What might be the most popularly used model for land-based allied onlining? I'd like to focus my practice right off the bat, then I can pick up the personalities of the others later thereby shortening the learning curve just a bit. Thanks.

P47 later versions more then a P51 even I believe....Perhaps even more so the P40's or P39's........You say 51's so assuming era.

Of the planes I've taken for joy rides so far, let's just say the P-51 didn't make my list of early favorites. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

If your talking Pacific theatre:

US

1944-1945:

P-38J/L
P-47D-25
P-51B/C

1941-1943:

P-39D/N/Q
P-40B/C/E/M


British

Spitfire VIII: 1944-1945
Spitfire Vc: 1942-1945
Brewster Buffalo 1941-1943
Hurricane I 1941-1942
Hurricane IIb/IIc 1942-1944

The most forgiving US plane seems to be the P-40B/C: good turn, good rate of roll, fair speed, fair firepower, rugged airframe. Downpoints are the lack of performance above 12,000 feet, low rate of climb and engine vulnerability. It wont outturn any of the Japanese fighters below about 250mph either, so be warned.

The P-39D2 is also suprisingly good, just watch out for the nasty behaviour in the stall. It will kill you below aout 8,000 feet.

Fly the P-51 and P-47 like you stole them: fast and high. Use slashing attacks against your opponents, and then fast gentle climbs out of danger. Don't get suckered into turn fighter. Attack then extend and come back with a speed/height advantage.

Fly high
Fly fast
Climb gently
Use shallow dives to get away

Things not to do in late US birds:

Get into turning dogfights at slow speed
