I'm reading a book "The Battle of Kursk" and it has several photos of the battle. Most Russian soldiers wore what looks like a winter a coat despite hot weather during the battle (around 30C). So, I dug up my old collection of WWII books and found the same thing. What was happening?

hmm Kursk

A suicidal offensive by an outnumbered force across several major rivers that was done for political reasons against strong objections from von Manstein, Guderian, Model and Jeschonne among others.

There was a heavy thunderstorm the day before the attack, maybe that had an effect.

Are you sure you're looking at authentic photos of the battle, as opposed to any old attractive pictures the editor thought would sell the book?

For a battle in July, the Red Army would have issued summerweight cotton clothing. Being inefficient, I'm sure they wouldn't have outfitted everyone; but no-one should be wearing overcoats!

Looking through this site:

the odd photo shows a heavy coat .. in others there appears to be a light weight "raincoat" in use but most are more like the photo's below ..

BUT ... take note, as suggested above, this first photo was amongst them which is definitely not summer of 43 !!!

First photo .. not Kursk

The above one is definitely not Kursk 43 .. some of these seem more likely to be correct ...
