I'm planning a new career in IL2 as a US Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific. However, I've never gotten too far in this career and I'm wondering how many missions it will consist of. In total, how many missions can it involve?

I recently finished an F6F USN career, started in Feb 1945. It lasted 46 missions. It was a long slog.

I had a Japanese one that started in 1943 and took about as many missions (I deleted the campaign after I finished and don't remember clearly). Was wounded multiple times and sent to the hospital which pushed me forward in time quite a bit.

I think there's a configurable parameter in an .INI file that can modify the campaign length.

I'm at the tail end of a USMC career that I started from the beginning (Wake Island) and I'm on the last campaign in Okinawa. 70+ missions so far, but I got injured twice, which really cuts down on the amount of missions you have.

The parameter in the conf.ini is CampaignLength= (case sensitive). It can be set to VeryLong, Long, Medium, Short, VeryShort. Not having the line it will default to VeryLong, which is what mine is set to.

Figure that the average for each campaign within a career is around 30-50 missions, depending certain factors. For instance, a Pearl Harbor campaign will last 1 mission, Midway and early Wake Island will be short as well.
