View Full Version : Where do you live???

FlatSpinMan

In keeping with the spirit of the excellent "Don't be shy. What do you look like?" thread, I thought another way for us to get to know each other would be by posting pics of where we live/are from as we are definitely an exotic, windswept, far-flung bunch of people.

To that end, here are a few pics of where I live: Kobe, Japan. I'm actually from NZ but this is my home now.
Please post pics of your town. I'm sure other members are interested even if you think it is dull.

The first is taken from my apartment's balcony. The others are from the centre/ hills of Sannomiya - the CBD of Kobe city.
If anyone happens to be passing through kobe PLEASE look me up - I'm dying to talk about this sim with another Believer! Those verdammt oustsiders just don't understand!!!

Kobe ni yokosou!!! Welcome to Kobe!!

Good God! Someone is going to ask what our willies look like next http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Oh, okay then http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is actually a little lower down the building than my place (I'm on the 23rd) but it is looking in exactly the same direction.

Melbourne CBD/Australia. Looking towards docklands:

http://www.realestate.com.au/objects/props/9484/401809484ml1130724093.jpg

The view to the right is much prettier. With a big river and a slew of bridges but heck, this is the only pic I could find http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Hey feathered, what's the orange roofed building and that white statue near what looks like a train station?

Feathered_IV
11-01-2005, 04:07 AM
I'm not sure what the orange-roofed building is but the big statue is an enormous 3rd Reich-ish looking concrete eagle (don't ask me why). The docklands area has been getting a facelift over the last few years and architects are falling over themselves to put up as many ugly things as possible before people start to complain.

The train tracks lead to Spencer Street Station, across the road and right beneath my balcony. Its getting rebuilt into this huge metal canopy arrangement thingy that looks rather like enormous silver pigs nipples. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

They've moved their base of operations to Little Collins Street now, but the old building remains (and is probably classified by the National Trust). The chaplains residence remains in the old building I think.

Yup, its the Royal Pavilion. Mad King Georges hangout. Probably the biggest tourist attraction.

Hitler also forbid area bombing of Brighton because he wanted it as his summer house after the invasion. Didn't stop precision dive bombing or bombers running home jettisoning there bombs on Brighton.

I'd be suprised if it didn't feature in the maps for BoB as its a massive land mark.

Nice pics everyone. Must go to England one day, the pics look so nice. Louisiana also looks nice but isn't that somewhere near where they found that python eating the alligator, or was that Florida?
as for glasgow, it looks alot like Dunedin, NZ, where I went to university. Not too surprising I guess as the city was founded by Scots intent on starting a new Scotland. they certainly got the amount of rain right.

I have an interesting story to tell here. My Parents were born in Brighton and like the above post is saying, the German's use to drop their bombs wherever and whenever they could. Brighton was a good target.

My old man remember's seeing his 1st dead body or bodies in this case (He was in the Para's in the 1950's and become quite famous in a conflict he fought in: mention in a few books etc...) when a Ju-88 crashed near Brighton http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Also, and this is a true story here, one day a German Aircraft shot up the school my mother was attending at the time killing her best friend and almost killing her at the same time http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Also, for those who live in Brighton, ask your Grandparents about the times the German Aircraft flew up and down Elm Grove (It's a steep hill in the middle of Brighton which has a long, straight road that goes up it).

Anyway, as I'm sure that some folk's know, I'm from Northampton in the UK. Famous for the British Grand Prix (Many F1 Teams are based around here), Carlsberg Beer is also made here, one of the best Rugby Teams (The Saints) are also from here.

This is All Saints Church in the middle of Northampton. This is where a Short Stirling Bomber crashed in 1941:

http://www.adzstock.com/Upload/Stock/Previews/19869.jpg

Here's the story about it if folk's are interested (Pages 9/10: Gold Street Stirling):

Not heard that one before about the Luftties up elm grove, probably gave the trams a fight, my mothers side of the family is from Brighton but both my grandmother and grandfather were stationed elsewhere during the war.

I know about the school that was attacked though, a very long time ago I heard the story first hand from a guy who used to own a newsagents down the road from me.

Theres also the guy who was killed by a falling drop tank and the Stuka that dive bombed the via duct but his bomb bounced along Argyle road, through a house via the front room, through the kitchen and out the back wall of the house and then hit the viaduct failing to go off.

Yeah but I bet that Athens, Georgia has no Acropolis or Parthenon any more than Moscow, Idaho has the Kremlin.

Mind you, you could have Portland, Dorset, England. So is Portland, Oregon, a blasted lump sticking out into a cold ocean with most of it's surface area eaten away by limestone quarries?

Why do you people say Toronto, Canada
Portland, Oregon and stuff like that? I mean is there any reasonable person who would think Toronto, West Africa, or Portland, Greece?
Uhm bacause in the US there is a Portland Oregon and a Portland Maine both major cities. and for the same reason that everyone else has mentioned the country they live in, there are many many cities with the same names </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Fair enough. I feel ashamed now; I didn't know that Portland Maine was also a major city http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif. Bloody trailblazers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif.

I was for 25 years of my continued youth http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, but I'm sort of retired now. My surfing now consist's of coaching my kids from the beach. When I was finishing school I had ideas of joining the world circuit, but enforced military service put paid to that idea. (I'm still miffed about idealogical politics and how it messes up peoples lives). Anyway, my brother (Chris van Lennep) is still active in the surfing photography world. He's been around the world a few times following the circuit.

http://www.planesoffame.org/

Im a lucky SOB in that alot of these planes regulary fly over my house on the weekends.. nothing makes mowing the lawn more fun than having a P38 fly over your house while your doing it! I grew up here, so, I have been seeing WWII planes flying over my house for 35+ years.. It wasnt until about 25 years ago I realised just how lucky I am.. I figured everyone had a P38 fly over thier house from time to time, but as it turns out that is not the case. So, now maybe you all can understand why it is that I have such a keen interest in seeing these planes modled as true to life as posiable.. in that I have seen most of them fly in real life.

Took that around the middle of last month. Eastern Oklahoma, Tahlequah to be exact. Name of the town is Cherokee for "Two is Enough". Picture was taken from the top of my house.
