OK, new at this and can't make sense of some things:

1. In the first few missions, all I do is fly out and back to the carrier following a long , and seemingly pointless, triangular course. Nothing happens. What's the purpose?

2. The mission usually says "Hidden target. Complete" when it's done (even when absolutely nothing happens). What does this mean?

3. If I were to guess, I'd say the purpose was simply to learn to fly in formation; trying to follow your leader (and BTW, being sworn at in blasphemous, and distasteful terms by someone on the radio: god**** this, god**** that- really unnecessary). But in order to keep up I generally have to fly at about 95% power, and eventually the leader will start to pull away again and I have to go 'afterburner' (well 110%). Does this seem right?

4. Occasionally someone will announce the course and altitude, but they are never at the altitude specified. He will say "Alt one-zero!" but will keep flying at 1350 for example. Should I listen to him?

5. And finally a trim queston: Could someone distinguish for me the difference between negative and positive trim (in terms of pitch). The FAQs say 'positive trim' will pull the nose UP, but I think it actually puts the nose DOWN. And while we're at it; how does one effect this trim? Do you keep hitting the keys endlessly, or hold them down? And how much work does it take to trim; I can never seem to get the craft to trim out correctly. often going back and forth from neg to pos trying to get some trim. I guess I just don't understand it.

yea i dont like the G.D talk myself. the missions i hate are the ones that send you to escort torp planes to attack J carriers yet when you get to the way point there are no ships . so like a good soldier i fly a little farther and fine them yet i cant get the torp planes to attack grrrrr i have yet to the planes im escorting drop one bomb or torp on a enemy ship.

I have had missions where the planes have bombed ships (dive bombers) and sunk a carrier so it does happen.

1. Two possibilities. First is that there really are no targets. Second (and far more likely) is that the targets have moved away from your planned course by the time you arrive and are outside visible range. I think that one of the DGen patches addresses this, see the "New DGen beta..." thread at the top of the forum.

2. If you have "No Instant Mission Success" turned off in difficulty settings, a hidden recon target is set at your landing area (or maybe your last waypoint in carrier missions) to force the game engine to recognise a succesful mission.

3. Cruise speeds are set a bit high for some aircraft types in the mission templates used by the campaign engine. Again the DGen beta should address this, or you can manually edit the mission files using Full Mission Builder after reading the brief.
You can also help a bit by:
Not trying to climb as fast as your flight leader
Fly at a higher altitude than your flight leader. An extra 500-1000m (~1500 - 3000 feet) will give you a true airspeed advantage at most altitudes used by the campaign missions.

4. The chatter and subtitles announce altitude in meters (subtitles with feet in brackets) to the nearest 100m interval. The actual mission altitude may be a touch higher or lower, just fly with your formation leader (or a bit above as described above in answer 3).

5. See this post (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=3481017842&r=2291047842#2291047842) on trim. There's a delay in game response that you need to take into account. As for direction, "Negative" is nose up, "Positive" is nose down.

Well Tully, that was a very helpful post. Thank You.

The advice you give on trim squares with my experience so far, and the link to your site was great (I've bookmarked it ). It should answer any other questons I might have.

Just as an aside, I might mention that there is an inconsistency in the Pilot FAQs, which state that...

"The default elevator trim settings are Ctrl+Down Arrow for positive (nose up), Ctrl+Up Arrow for negative (nose down)..."

Another possibility here is that you are hearing course and alt announcements for another flight somewhere in the area. Unfortunately, the voices sound the same and you can't tell when it is your flight leader making the announcement.

Yeah, but usually he says something pointed; like "HEY! Number Eight! Keep up, Dumhat!"

And I look out at my wing, and sure enough, I'm number 8.
