View Full Version : Any tips on finding the runway - online?

I've been using this forum and reading up on stuff and then going online to fly on warbirds or ZvW (anything that has padlocking off and full cockpit on basically) to try out what I'm learning.

However, When I get in the pit I can't even find the runway because there are no outside views. One game had the runway behind. Of course, I thought it was at my front so I taxied for bloody hours looking for the damn thing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Are there any tips for finding the runway?

Mods - can you delete the other post. For some reason it didn't show after I submitted it, hence the double post.

Are there any tips for finding the runway? Only thing you could do is call into ground control and have them tell you where home base is...They'll give you a heading, this is when navigation skillz come into play, it's a great way to actually see how those aces did it back then and to fly without the help of icons, waypoints etc. Now with the 409b patch there is an Slovakia map or whatever that has just a grass field for runways, and you cannot easily find them like you can with the grass runways in previous maps...Or you could fly upsidedown so you can see the ground...lol

I generally look around for the 'control tower' type affair which is usually about 1/2 way the runway.

Failing that if there are a few other players on the server you'll soon see someone coming or going.

The runways can sometimes be a bit hard to spot but you'll soon get the hang of it.

open your map and right click till the map is fully zoomed in.

then you can see which direction the runway is in relation to your plane.

of course this only works on servers that have a map icon for your plane. most do, but a few dont.

The first time I take off in a server, I use landing flaps.

Just in case I pick the wrong direction. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You Noob! Don't you know it was common practice to blindfold aces in their billets, Take them to unfamiliar airstrips, dump them in unfamiliar aircraft at an unknown position at the strip and expect them to taxi to the correct position unaided! And then put other planes in the blind spot infront of the nose just as they throttled up to taxi just to keep them on their toes!

Only joking of course! It can be very frustrating. I tend to stick to early war types where you can just push the trottle forward and have a bumpy trakeoff accross the grass.

(and err! sorry about the Noob thing it was just for dramatic effect!)

Besides studying the map before you take off, it's a good idea to look for 'navigation points' on your way to the combat zone.

A number of people posting here have missed the point. Jex_TE is asking how to find the runway when you spawn on the ground on a dogfight map.

I have the same problem and have crashed a few times when I taxi to the "runway" and throttle up only to find I am bouncing across the grass or snow.

There is a difference in the grass but it's not much. Runways should show more brown, IMO.

Runways should be like they are in Slovakia map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Jex_TE, there's not an easy solution I'm afraid. If you get lost you can move to another field, if possible, and see if you get a better spawn point there.

LOL - unless you can taxi in the air, i think it was pretty obvious what I meant http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

However, yesterday I spawned in on a huge airbase on warbirds that had three runways in the shape of a triangle. On the ground there were buildings and trees (i crashed into trees 3 times). It took me and a friend 5 or ten minutes to find the runway. A frikkin marker showing the direction of the runway would help - it's ridiculous trying to find a black runway as the sun is setting. Why can't they just put down some markers?

1) look for other planes landing, there orientation will tell you where the runway is.

2) as painful as it is, spend time looking where your going by spinning the plane left and right, with rudder and brake while at a standstil to find your route, before pointing it in the same direction again and moving forward, therefore avoiding trees and buildings, and other hurtful objects.

3) try the age old online tactic, of starting the enginge, giving it some, and hope for the best, a tactic that some people seem to do quite well with. used to be much more effective with earlier patches though, ground effects have changed quite alot over the games evolution.

Here's hoping for some sort of ATC for SOW.

Plus maybe some EAW-style vectoring to intercepts over the radio and no map icons.

Full flaps, 75% throttle, slight back pressure and gently work the rudder continuously. Aim for a gap between hangars and fellow players....runway be d@mned. On the third bounce, Oleg's Fantasy BouncieGrass™ will launch you on your way.

Trouble is that sometimes no other players spawn for ages, especially on warbirds where the flyout's are fairly lengthy.

It needs either taxi signs or an option for external view whilst only on the ground.
