Assuming it ever really is produced...

If it's at all good, I think you'll see my squad (6BL or No. 6 "Black Lions" Sqdn Royal Flying Corps) disappear from IL-2.

We started out many years ago as a WWI squad in Dawn of Aces (which has sadly been neglected by its builders and is now horribly obsolete) and, frankly, most of our hearts are still in that era.

But it will have to be good to win us over. The F2b (No. 6 Sqdn) and the SE5a (No. 56 Sqdn -- Mannock, Ball, etc.) were our main rides, so how they perform will be what wins or loses us http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We'll see...

The clouds look like crapola. BUT, it's the game that matters, not the graphics as much.

Lots of humans online in exchange for IL2 level of graphics? CHA-CHING! I will buy it.

I don't see anything wrong with the graphics. The planes themselves look ok and the ground looks good enough. Who cares if the clouds are up to IL2 snuff?? How many sims, military or civie, have ever had clouds as good as FB?? Maybe the third party clouds for FLY!II were close to FB quality. Also maybe Lomac is on par.

This dang thing has been "coming" for so long I've lost hope that it will ever be released. However, this could mean that they're really going to release a quality product. I cut my teeth on Red Baron and still climb into RB3D now and then. The damage model is supposed to be out of this world...watching your machine gun tear away the canvas on the wings of your opponent.

WWI is fantastic aircombat. The quantum leaps in technology have never been matched since IMO, not even the jump from props to jets.

I loves me Se5a too!

Wonder how they'll model damage. I bought and tried a WWI sim years ago(Red Baron). The damage models were arcade-like, I thought, even by the standards of the time. The flight models were simple, and not very interesting.

This one looks a little more promising.

Anyway, I'll probably buy and try it. I'll buy anything that simulates prop flight.

I think it will be good but it has been in the works for a long time. Hopefully it will get released within a year. I see nothing wrong with the graphics, they look perfectly good to me and the damage visuals look very nice. I am not an SE.5A fan though, you will be seeing me in a black Fokker Dr.I with a white and black striped tail. BTW that was my personal markings in both Red Baron and Red Baron II/3d.

I'm also hoping this one makes it onto the shelves and lives up to it's promise.

My Grandfather was a pilot in the RFC during 1917/18. He flew DH9's, Sopwith Pup's and SE5a's.

I have still got loads of photos he took during this time, and his original handwritten training notes which make incredible reading (Although since this is nearly 90 years old now I don't open the folder much!!)

I have acouple of photos scanned onto my PC. Ithought this might interest some of you. Unfortunately I had to reduce the image size and the quality has suffered a little.

Thanks for your interest guys. Here are a few more for you. Most of them will need rescanning to get clear images, which isn't going to happen for quite a while I'm afraid.

Repco: I'm afraid the training manual will never get scanned. It's way too fragile now to survive taking it apart. I'm sure you'll understand that I don't want to destroy it.

This last one is my Grandfather. If you think he looks young, you're right...He lied about his age to join up. He was 17 when he was posted to France.

Hope you enjoy these. I'll post some more if I get the chance.

Great stuff Ground Magnet!

If you're worried about scanning, one possibility is to use digital camera, the quality wouldn't be as good, but at least you would have some kind of back-up copy of the original notes.

Yeah SE.5 was good but Fokker DVII was better http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif (my preference, before anybody starts, LOL!)

They have done an Interview over at Sim HQ and have only just released some of those screenshots so Im sure it will be published.

Im really looking foward to it and my IL2 days may well be over. Ibought the first when it came out and then bough IL2 FB about 6 months after release.

However when BOB comes out then IL2 will then leave my hard drive for definate. Im sure KoE will stay though as its WW1 and boy am I interested in this war.

You'd be the only one in that rig http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif...most Germans hated that plane as it was inferior to the D.III - too heavy, lost manuevreability.

I'd never fly in a Camel, I've heard it was terribly tricky and hard to fly.

My choice would be a Dr.I for TnB, any SPAD for BnZ, and D.VII for overall performance.

And I'd like also to fly LFG Roland or any other German CL aircraft... The Sturmoviks of that era!

My favourite **** fighters: Fokker Eindeckers (I'd like to know how Immelmann or Boelcke could be so deadly with those inferior machines, if not for synchronised guns), and SPAD A.2, with that nacelle hanging before the front propeller and the gunner inside trying not to have his head chopped off... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

http://alanmorgandesigns.co.uk/images/dsc2.jpg

BTW, I'd never fly in a SE.5a and even less in an earlier SE.5... those planes were said to have very rugged engines, but having very weak structure... Albert Ball surely died because of this.

Hey Ground Magnet

Please consider offering your archive to a university to copy and have available for study. Kansas in the US and Leeds in the UK keep WW1 stuff. Of course you don't have to give away valuable family stuff. Great air-to-air photos, very rare in WW1.
My grandad witnessed air fighting from the trenches in 1914! No pics though.

Ground Magnet:

By your posts I guess those training notes are getting really fragile due to oxidation and other non-reversible paper degrading processes.

I'm afraid that if you really want to preserve it, you should look ASAP for the help of archive and paper manipulation experts. If not, they will slowly disappear in a cloud of yellow confetti.

What about sharing it with some history of flight or research institution. Those notes and all that graphical data could give unvaluable data for aviation and war History scholars, and it's a high risk of it to vanish in a few years.

First of all, Magnet, what a treasure you have! By all means take them to a professional who preserves old documents and photos. At a minimum, digitalize all of them. Good on you!

Second, if you REALLY want to have some great biplane dogfights and can't wait for KOE, there are two fantastic, well-matched Biplanes in AEP.

Try a Gladiator and a Fiat 42 Falco against each other in QMB. Amazing biplane flights! And they REALLY were that agile...and slow. You can't go fast enough to pull enough Gs for a blackout http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
