View Full Version : Maybe it's me, but the most beautiful WW2 plane is...

The FW190-A!

It's got the most pleasing lines--just the right balance of straight and curved.

The wide track gear impart an impression of stolid sure-footedness. And it looks very nearly as good on the ground as in the air.

The prop blades are reminiscent of a bird's quill feathers.

The exhaust ports are very much like a shark's gill openings.

The teardrop canopy flows with the fuselage.

Unlike the -D model, I just plain prefer the stubbier cowl. The compactness reminds me of a swarthy pugilist.

In short, it's look says, "I mean business!"

Heresy to many, but the Spitfire can't hold a candle to the Anton! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

I mean the Spit is a beauty but the 190 just gets more points for looking the warplane part.

the winner for sure.

That said, the 190 is one heck of a beauty, too. It wins the "warplane" department hands down. One mean bugger ready to do the job.

The Spit just looks like a miss universe winner thrown onto the wrong stage. Artificially beautiful, but definitely lacking character.

Other contenders are the Corsair and the Schwalbe.

I think the 190A-1 through A-4 was stunning. With the tad of added length in the A-5, it looked less compact, less attractive in my eye. The bumps of the A-7 through 9 definitely are unappealing to me. The 190D is another beast altogether, a race horse. The brutal look of the Ta 152C-0 appeals to me, too. Kurt Tank was a brilliant designer. Unfortunate the A series were not performers high up or it would have my vote for best fighter.

Ratsack

I love the look of Fw 190 As marked with the Tatzelwurm, like that one.

I also agree the Anton is a really cool looking piece of air. However, I also like the look of the lumpy 109 Gs. The really lumpy G-6s, with bumps and warts and loops and antennae and gondolas and drop tanks: they look so ugly, but in a good kind of way.

cheers,
Ratsack

Sexiest plane to ever fly!

civildog

Cobra - it looks fast, like a mamba.

Zero - like a swallow, very graceful.

Me262 - Like a mako shark, mean and fast.

ACtually I think comparing them all to cars works best.. Japanese planes are slick and graceful like a Lexus sportscar.

German planes are full of ultra precision, purposful machining - they remind me of Porsches.

American planes are big, overpowered brutes with good durability - like a Chevy pickup.

Well...opinions are like ********s. Everybody has one, and they all stink but your own.

Some combat aircraft make a statement about what they do, or who designed it.

bf-109: Rapier-Wins all beauty contests with that mixture of Teutonic efficiency and threatening countenance.
Fw-190: Hammer
Spitfire: Ballerina
Hurricane: Let's get some work for unemployed tailors.
Wellesley: Let's not forget the basket weavers guild!
Hawker Typhoon: Could we make these wings any thicker?
Whirlwind: Why must half of all things built by Britain look stupid? ...the other half is in the shop. No wonder it never got built. Hint: Taper!
Lancaster: 3 million Britons out of work and I still can't get any ventral protection!
G4m Betty: Too much Sake and you get the ends confused.
P-47: Aluminum shortage? What aluminum shortage?
p-51: I know you hate me...but you can't find a fault, can ya?

The true test of aircraft beauty is whether it looks right no matter which national insignia it sports. That is, does it look good with roundels as it does with stars or crosses ?

As an example, the Fw190 looks striking with the German cross, but looks kind of squat with American insignia - not a beauty.

There is one plane which looks great no matter which insignia it wears - THE P40 !

Therefore, THE P40 IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, with perhaps the P39 as runner-up.

Be sure.

Btw, I did find one MiG-3 vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW20E3pIB3c starts at 2:37. What a beautiful machine!

The I-15 landing at 1:47 looks like me landing it in the sim at times. I thought I was inept, but looks like that is just flat out realism. lol

Amazing video!

I wonder why so many people like the F4U Corsair?
It looks like one of those paper towel cardboard tubes with crooked wings stuck on. Then they added the vert stab too far forward. Fugly plane!!!

Well....my house guest thinks the Corsair is "pretty aeroplane". She enquired "what are fat blue aeroplanes?" and for some reason reason found the reply hysterical. I am now having to put up with a mad woman singing "I am the cat from Hell, purrrpurrr!, ha!ha!ha!" Funny chaps, women.

Well, if you leave it up to them, most will elect spit anyway.

Wow! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

In regards to the Corsair being different, I think that is what makes it beautiful to me. The gull wings are what lets a 5 year old recognize it. It IS unique though, love it or hate it.

I still get chills every time I watch the scene in Letters from Iwo Jima (great flick BTW in my opinion) when the Corsairs are strafing the Japanese base.

Haven't seen those before either. Maybe these are the Yak 3 replicas that are equipped with Allison V-1710 engines?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakovlev_Yak-3

Here's one with the scoop and the cowling off. Perhaps the experts here can tell if this is an Allison or Klimov engine?

Excuse the big images here, but they're nice and for the life of me I don't know how to make them smaller without HTML.

Ok, this one is not quite WW2 but in my mind the best looking airliner ever built:

De Havilland Comet

For WW2:

They are modern replicas powered by Allison V-1710 engines.

The Boeing 314 is right near the top of my list as well.

Also, the Spruce Goose - I know it missed WW2, but in terms of performance (700 troops across the Atlantic in one flight) and looks, it's an absolutely stunning aircraft. Shame there was only one.

http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/images/spruce_goose_flight_750.jpg

Isn't she gorgeous? There's something about flying boats which give them a chunky yet sleek look. They are the complete opposite to the Ju-52 for example.

Another masterpiece, Leitmotiv. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

With obvious influences from both Holbein's Henry VIII - turning corpulence into an image of power, and Jean-Luc Goddard's innovative use of text, another primeval male fear is realised in visual form. The green of the falling aeroplane representing youthful exhuberance, it's red markings clearly a reference to stigmata wounds, reminding the viewer of late Byzantine iconic pieces. The feline reference so accurately playing upon the female perception of herself, the star motif a reminder that perhaps we are all playthings of astral forces beyond our comprehension. The unfortunate victim symbolically suffers the fate perhaps most feared by males since the dawn of time ....being shot down in flames by a fat chick.

How can you guys just pick one plane? Sexy, actresses are casted to the role they play depending on what the movie is about, and they can look hot in what pose they are in depending on what mood YOUR in, and if their style fits your appetite... This changes every week (or day) for me, how can a WW2 airplane be any different? How can you pick just one love? How can you pick a favorite child?

The FW-190 - probably the most badass looking plane, but it is too "utiliterean" for me,but yes, its Muscular and extremely badass and "hardcore" comes to mind.

BF-109 - Mentioned a bit, but I am surprised, I thought it would get more nods. Its graceful but yet agressive and usefull looking. There is not a bad line on the aircraft, nothing out of place, gracefull wings smooth tail line, and it has a long sexy nose. It looks fast, and mean, in that order.

P-40 - I can't describe why this is a hot plane, it just is. The nose inparticular, on early and late models, I just find very appealing. A very proportioned looking plane.

P-38 - Odd design? Yes... But I still have never seen a better looking twin-boomed plane. It looks like something from outerspace, but in a fast cool looking kind of way.

MiG 3 - A few people on this forum have mentioned it, I find it totally awesome. The longest hood and nose of any fighter, the cockpit is so far back... It is like the classic front engined sports car, like a Ferrari Daytona with a big long bonnet, outstanding looking.

Hurricane - Nobody especially likes the Hurricane? I find it to look very balanced, and just beautiful.. Maybe this is just me.

Macchi or Regia Aeronautica - I cant believe noone mentioned these aircraft, very exotic and bold looking, like their italian car counter-parts, they just scream "italian passion"

Sorry, never liked the bubble canopies on most american fighers.. Looks like an after-thought to me.

Boy, I got a few drinks in me, its time to call it a night.

Never seen them with scoops like that before.

The image is named "yak-3m.jpg" so maybe the subtype is Yak3-M?

I think they're re-issues w/ an Allison engine. The Russians made a small batch of them using original factory jigs etc. back in the early 90's IIRC...

Too difficult to chose, really...

But those fighters that look perfectly compact like the P39, or the Fw190A are really beautiful to me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

In fact i tend to like the aircrafts that seem to be built in one piece, they just rock: no big underwing or belly radiators, no extra pieces to correct the aircraft handling or aerodynamics.

This is why the 109, the Spit, Tempest are not among my favorites: those birds just seem to be overcorrected http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But you know it well, it's like women, you do not fall in love with the most say "beautiful" each time!
