Sort of wondering about the old geezer in the front aircraft. He is either sick, not colorized, a cutout. Or up to now good watching Rosy the Riviter. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I thought it was going to be a picture of hard working Frenchmen busily stuffing IL-2 46 DVD's into packaging to satisfy their valued worldwide customers. But then I remembered that was a dream I had one night.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It is a protective covering for the "glass".

I stumbled across this picture on wikipedia. But don't get too excited, because that was the only picture of its kind (depicting an assembly line) on the website. THat's to say, as far as I could tell.

That picture from the Dauntless assembly line is the same picture used on the cover for the book 'Forge of Freedom'. It's subject is about the way the US (only) was mass producing its air fleets. I can recommend it for everbody interested in the assembly lines for airplanes. A time which we will never see again.
I can just marvel at those pictures, of airplanes moving down the line. I appreciate the effort the people did in those years even more, because of my job. I've to spent a lot of time in an assembly plant for a major manufacturer (which one is irrelevant). And when I see what kind of a logistic nightmare (among others) it is to get every part of the correct level to the line, I can only imagine what it must have been at that time, with such a complex object as an aircraft.

Granted, aircraft mass production is nothing compared to vehicle mass production (they build close to 5000 units per week), but still...

paper mache offerd extra protection, at the cost of the pilots flying completely blindly...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

"And why is that woman applying paper mache on the mitchell..."

It's very simple: They are preping the aircraft for paint. My question is though they have masked over part of the glass support structure for the nose section. They painted that also so why she has masked over some of it is beyond me.

They are masking the glass so they can spray the plane

Yeah! Really nice pics - thanks!

BTW: whats that Mustang? It looks like it has 20mm on its wings. Maybe its an A-36 or is it only a cover for the normal cal.50 MGs?

Edit: by googling for the A-36 I found those two interesting pics (sorry for the size):

20mm? Wooden wheel?
