I have been desperately trying to keep my system running and delaying upgrading until SOW comes out. My current computer is a laptop that i have from work (my old PC at home wont run IL2)and it's starting to show it's age. The keyboard is knackered (the 'T' key sometimes gets stuck), the DVD-ROM sounds like a potato peeler, the screen is scratched, and it generally looks like a system that gets carted around the backroads of Australia (which it does). At home i get around these problems by using an external DVD drive and monitor (and nothing mapped to 'T').
The health service IT guy dropped by on Monday to ask how my networking problem was going and noticed the battered condition of my laptop. He 'helpfully' started tinkering with it and managed to make it freeze- i dont know how http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif
He then took it off me for a couple of days to fix it, noticed some odd things about the setup and cleaned up the system.
His boss appeared while my defenceless laptop was being interfered with and decided to 'help' as well. His blood pressure apparently spiked when he saw that Half-life 2 and IL2 were loaded on, together with the TrackIR and joystick software and various other things i had managed to load onto it.
Now i am in the bad books and have been put on a leash (i cant load any software at all now), the motherboard of the laptop has died, and i've lost all the add-ons that i had downloaded over the years http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif
The IT Nazis gave me a bollocking about how important it was that their computers are only used for work purposes and not entertainment- i felt it wasnt the right time to point out to them that it's a Yin-Yang thing. Saving lives is my job, death and destruction is my hobby.
I probably wont be able to afford a new system for a few months (my wife thinks education, fuel, food, and mortgage are more important) so i have to go cold-turkey from gaming http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif
If the IT guy hadnt 'helped' me i might have been able to nurse this laptop along for a few more months until my budget was back in the black and (maybe) SOW came out.

At least my old PC can run solitaire http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

You should have been already suspicious and defensive at this point! No genuine IT guy ever asks users, how a problem is "progressing". Motto: less known about problem = less work! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

You may have been the victim of someone stealing IL-2 from you in a tricky way http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yeah, sounds like a stitch-up. Be sure the boss and IT perp are having a LAN party back at the office.

GEt on ebay, pick ups some bargain parts and maybe some 2nd hand stuff over the month and build a good system.

For example :-

You should be able to put togther an
AMD 64 4000+ - 40,
Geforce 6800/RAdeon X800 - 50,
1gb PC3200 - 30,
Decent Motherboard - 25,
Case - 25,
mouse+ keyboard - 10,
Soundblaster Live! - 3
QTEC 500W PSU - 25

= around 200

This should let you run IL2 and any other gamnes you wish to pplay very well right up until SOW arrives.

Tsk, tsk. Everybody knows that work laptops are only for porn.
