Wow amazing pictures! Thanks for this thread!

Would those sailors have any inclination they were going to be shooting at each other shortly?

Agreed, nice pictures.

Would those sailors have any inclination they were going to be shooting at each other shortly?

My guess would be no.

Considering the general public's isolationism in the US, and Britian and France's reluctance to do anything that might lead to another war, it's unlikely that any of these countries' sailors would have thought war a possibility, never mind a probability. Additionally, it's unlikely a sailor would have any idea of the larger polical picture.

I suspect that even the Germans, who were in the best position to know that war was possibly emminent, wouldn't have known for sure, since all the moves that the British etc had been making indicated that they were just going to fold to German pressure. Of course for the US, Europe was Europe's problem.

I don't think sailors really thought about war.
I read magazines from summer 1939 and you couldn't find so many War symptoms just few about Danzig/Gdansk. A lot of info of colonies, new ships, ports etc. It looked like somebody just cut publishing without notice.

Liddabit - see visits of cruiser Konigsberg and DDs Burza/Wicher were in beg. 1930 before Hitler /on Konigsberg still Reichmarine Jack/

In the Graf Spee picture, I'm fairly certain that the ships behind are the Royal Sovereign(nearer) and the Hood in the background.
