View Full Version : Best quote from Oleg I've read yet!

Oleg: Pilots win dogfights. Not airplanes. If a pilot is not particularly good, regardless of a plane, he'll always have a sinking feeling that something somewhere is wrong... and not everyone is willing to admit that the fault lies within.

Most of the drama arises from high expectations. People have grown-up reading the memories and watching movies based on the exploits of the best of the best, and they somehow expect their gaming experience to be the same as it was for a few very lucky, very capable, unique individuals. But since most of virtual pilots have average skill and luck, they instead experience combat as it was to an average historical pilot. And an average historical pilot did not shoot down 352 enemy planes, approaching every combat with ease, and escaping every battle without a scratch.

Most of all, people have to always have fear and respect of their opponent. They can't approach a dogfight with preconceived propaganda notions of the other side being inferior. A better pilot in an inferior plane will still shoot you down 9 out of 10 times. Plane characteristics have nothing to do with it.

It's quite funny actually to visit flight sim forums in various languages, and read on a Russian site that Oleg sold out to imperialists, and made Russian planes inferior to Germans; and then go on a German forum and read the exact opposite, about the exact same planes.

Honestly I disagree about these words.

To say "the skilled pilot always wins" is right flying similar planes, but it's not fair that some planes have flaws and other not... all they should have the right characteristics, at least those proved by real data.

For example I "can" be a good pilot (I'm generalizing) I know how to stay alive in a F4, and I know how to energy fight: but why must I repeat a BnZ 5 times because the elevator became heavy at 500km/h, right in the firing moment? The enemy under me can be skilled too and he can do evading turns all the time, but if he isn't dying in 2 passage is because a fake elevator stiffness, not his skill.

If after the 5th pass I get ambushed by an higher plane it's my fault of course, I lacked of SA: but simply without the elevator stiffness I should not be still there...

Idem, for the Antons: crappy thrust above 300km/h, higher turn time, crappy sight: youo say "stay fast and don't engage in turning fight" but if the model wasn't so crappy you could try to turn, maybe not for 5 minutes, but obviuosly more then the 1 90? turn that we see now.

P-38?

K4 climbing rate?

Simply the FM flaws limit the skill of the player forcing to fly at not optimal way like the plane, according to real data, should do.

I'm not claiming the Oleg modelled some plane wrong on purpose.

It's only that the the statement above is a EXCUSE to not fix wrong FMs...

Pilot skill is with out a doubt the most important element in this sim. I offen go up against a latter year aircraft just for the fun of it. Sometimes I win, and when I FU, I know it right away. Pilots must learn to position themselve's, or to run like hell when it is time to. You really need to do alot of head work, but that is why IL2 is so great

Codex1971
07-24-2007, 08:29 AM
As much as I read in these forums about how planes are porked, I still say Oleg has got it right. This is a simulator at the end of the day and you have to accept that even in real life, not all aircraft of the same type and model flew exactly to factory or test data. As pilots did back in WW2 they adjusted their tactics to maximise their ability to use their aircraft's strengths to exploit their opponent's weakness.

Yes some things are not right in both blue and red planes, so what! Does it really change the fact that a good pilot, weather he/she be real or virtual, must learn to fly their crate to its strength and learn to minimise its weaknesses. I think not. That is what Oleg is saying in that interview, and why all the whining in this place is seen as just that...whining.

Manu, you do realise a computer game (oops sim) will always have some limitations no matter how much care is taken correct? Also, there were many factors in the war that cannot easily be modeled.

That said, the tech quality can make a difference, I just don't think it was that much during WWII. Numbers yes...that can trump skill more than high tech.

I agree: the range of skill level was very wide, there were few real aces and lots of rookies... so the pilot's ability won the greater part of the fights.

But above all tactics (and important ones can't be use here since the "sound radar"... do you know how many time I ambush a plane and closing him at his low 6 I see him evading?... oh.. I do it too when I listen a engine sound a my 6).

BUT HERE we are not WW2 pilots: IL2 is too simple and don't model some very important aspects like fatigue, jamming and FEAR.

While the first 2 can be modelled easily the latest can be modelled with a general ladder as the one of America's Army.

In IL2 the difference between ACEs and average pilots (and rookies if provided of some planes) is much smaller. So small that planes performance becames an important factor.

But above all I hate when people say "learn to fly it": if you buy a bycicle but you find it with only one tire you have not to learn to drive it like a clown, you want to drive it like a normal bycicle.

I don't want to turn around the problems, I wish to solve them.

"Learn to fly it"... I prefer "learn your enemy".

Oh yes, the data held in area 51... how can I forget that.

I like the way people always find another "source" to justify the game flaws. Different untouchable data, hypothesis ans so on...

Until the "post proofs" statement even if they were just posted since many years...

Probably the germans were really dumb to not understand that the 190 with a Stuka's prop could outperform those in their own tests.

Stuka's propellers for all!!
