I'm never unappreciative of any new aircraft coming in, but I have to wonder about this one.

the TBD Devastator is probably the US Navy definition of "Obsolete"

of course they are releasing it with the Claude, so maybe obsolete is the theme.

I was hoping for something like the SB2C Helldiver if a new USN Plane was modelled... when I think of the TBD I just remember the whole squadron of them that was swatted out of the sky during Midway, and how none of them hit any of their targets.

I'll start going on a "Free the Helldiver" campaign soon...

I'm not setting out to stop this thing from being released, rather i'd like to start a nice peaceful discussion on this flying target.

Hey i'd love newer planes just as much, but let us not look a gift horse in the mouth.
It's carrier based.
It's got a torpedo.
It's cute! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
BRING IT!

The Devastators participated in the two most improtant operations of the first year of the war, Coral Sea and Midway. Even though it was cannon fodder it still made an important Contribution to these Battles. Case in point:
at Midway, the TBDs came in at low level before the dive bombers arrived at the Japanese fleet. The Japanese fighter cover dove down to the wavetops to deal with the TB's, which left the Dive bombers free to atttack from high altitude. The inclusion of this type will make the game more historically accurate, and that's always a good thing.

What is incredible is that it wasn't earlier in the game, as AI at least. You can't make any accurate early PTO carrier-based mission without them.

And yes, it was obsolete. And yes, it was there. You can't change history to have only cool stuff and win the war in a year, UncleReiben.

BTW, Helldiver wasn't so much better. It was a difficult, underpowered plane.

Two things UncleRieban;

1) The Devestator was probably not as bad as the torpedoes they were launching against the IJN fleet.

2) You have to realize that many, if not most of the planes that we will be getting in the subsequent patches are being built by third party modelers, not by Oleg's crew.

I wish that Oleg would be more insistant on what he wants modeled for his game, rather than accepting whatever comes along, provided it meets his standards of accuracy.

VTs were doomed as a weapons platform anyway. They did OK at Coral Sea, and poorly at MIdway. The IJN made some good VT attacks as well early on.

The realities of CV warfare made coordinated attacks by VTs difficult, including escort. Improvements in AAA (numbers and quality) didn't help either. The TBFs and TBMs we used carried bombs more than torpedos.

For historical accuracy, we don't have the Yorktown CLass CV's either, to go with those Devastaters.

Hope to get them soon.
