It used to be called Pacific War, and it first came out and I played it many, many years ago. This is a revamped modernized and improved version by Matrixgames that I think is a little overpriced but it's good to see the game is still around. To even play the old game you have to be a real grognard with patience for going through the minutiae of an entire war. They call strategy games like master of orion 3, the excellent civil war games and civilization 'complicated', they don't even begin to touch this monster, you pretty much have to become a hermit to play through the war in a year. With a family my hands are full with pacific fighters!

Is this still on the shelves? If not, how do I get a copy of this?

Its available as a download from Matrix but they want $69 for it.I'd google it.I've seen it as low as $39.

Geez! Sixty-Nine dollars?!

Well, I suppose if one is going to over-charge for such an item, "69" would be the most apt figure to use, I guess...

It's off to Googleland I go!

Try this link:

http://www.warinthepacific.net/

It is (as said above) a beast. The whole war, 1 day turns, individual ships, aircraft and pilots. Comments have been 12 hours to set up turn 1 for the Japanese. Once you get going it gets easier, but this is real micromanagement territory. Looks good for a strategy wargame (at least to me).

It is only sold direct from Matrix. Not sure where the "googleland" copies are being sold by...

I've started seeing it last weekend on the shelves of my local CompUSA (Northern Virginia area), so some copies might be out there. Online, EBGames.com has it for $ 40 I believe.

If you are look for a pacific wargame then WITP is the best.

The game its self uses the same engine that was used for Uncommon Valor, which feature the war in New Guinea and Guadacanal.

If you are a Grognard then I can`t recommend it highly enough.

Just downloaded it last night - cost me eighty bucks! However, if this game is as good as they say, then it may well be worth it.

I'm a friggin' lunatic when it comes to the naval history of WWII (the battles in the southwest pacific in particular). WitP looks like it could sate a huge portion of that appetite! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I especially like the music in WitP; does a great job setting the ambiance.

Oh, please tell me: just what is a "Grognard"? I have a feeling I may be one... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Grognard was a veteran soldier in Napoleons army
(someone who tended to grumble)

It has become a term used to describe someone who is a experienced wargamer, usually with a obsession for detail.

Oh, so I would be described as a "Gro-nar" then, right?

I've just spent a few hours learning some of the nuts and bolts of WitP, and I'll tell ya; they've covered about everything there is to cover in a WWII naval strategy sim, except maybe the ships individual crew-member names, and the "Red Seat" in the head that nobody on the ship ever wants to be seen using!

The music is great, by the way! Conveys the epic proportion of events that was the Pacific War very well. The battle sequences unfortunately leave a lot to the imagination, however they are still good enough to be at least a little entertaining.

Only true WWII buffs will appreciate this title...

I play the game for more then a year now. If you like complex strategy and micromanagement with Planes/ Ships/ Troops/ Supplies and Factories and are not in a hurry to learn or play the game....

This is the best game ever. I've you like(d) Pacific War then you will definitely like War in the Pacific. As a experience player it takes about 30 minutes to play a Play By Email Turn.

And let be honest... IL-2/FB/AEP/PF you will also not learn in 1 day http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
