View Full Version : What the hell, Stay on leaders course

Ah yes. My very favourite message. Extra special whn I have it screamed at me by the American pilots since I can actually understand the contemp and hate in their voices in a language similar to my own.

But my problem isn;t with the way the message is delivered, nor the unfortunate frequency in which it gets shouted to me, but rather, the circumstances under which it is said to me.

Imagine this. You're a young eager B25 pilot in charge of a young eager crew. You all understand the way you work so when you're a few mins from the bomb run you put the plane on level stabliser and tell your bombardier to do his job.

You (now as the bobadier) spend a few minutes helping to line up the plane with the target. Calculating your altitude, airspeed and bombsight angle, your thumb poised over the bomb release button as you stare at the target drawing closer and closer to the centre crosshairs in the bombsight when suddenly...

"What the hell... Stay on leaders course"

Stuff them for a minute, I'm almost over the target. You relase your bombs and continue to watch them fall invisibly through the 8000 feet of air below you.

"This is two Target destroyed" Before long everybody in your flight has claimed a peice of the ground. Then you see your bombs detonate on the ground, right where a demolished hanger and a few aircraft once stood. Dammit. Another half hour wasted!

Why don't they bomb properly? Why cant we just fly to the target drop our bombs and go home like a normal bomber crew would. Whats with all this hollywood/con-air style swooping towards the ground and pulling up just in time nonsense all about? And why am I getting my *** kicked for doing it properly?

Even more annoyingly when you decide to start every career with a high rank just to get rid of that rotten radio message, the same thing happens. The rest of your flight run away and bomb the target, wiping it off the face of the planet long before your bombs make it to the ground.

Why can;t I say to the rest of my planes, "hey you, get your spotty little behind back up here and bomb the enemy like a gentleman. Quit with the acrobatics 'cos you ain't impressin' nobody, sunshine!"

Anybody else haveing this problem? Anything I can do to set the records straight with ol' IL2 series ai pilots... Will I get branded a traitor if I shoot down all my fellow bombers on the way to the target?

Any advice, information would be warmly received,

Rob.

As long as you are the flight leader you can give them the "rejoin" command several times on the way to the target. Specifically, when you are less than 6 to 10 kilometers away. They will stay with you and you can attack. However, the remainder of your flight will not attack until you give them the "attack ground targets" then tell them the target type. Of course, they usually have to be within 5 kilometers of the target when that command is issued or they might say "unable".

I don't know what you can do to have an all in one attack AND get them to stay with you.

Hit your TAB key and check out all the commands and requests available to you. Also note which flight(s) you can command. They will be bright in color. Non-commandable flights will be dim on the TAB list.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

or...if they do not obey orders u tecnically can kill them, if u follow wartime principles that is.
Stuff like 'war is war' , 'kill the enemy otherwise he will kill u' and such.
So if your men work against u they work for the enemy. war is not won by being sentimental some mean:

In an ideal world my AI flight leaders would shout that instead of the boring one we have now. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

Thanks for the input guys. So tonight, I'm going to go home, fire up my B25 career and:

1) Try using the rejoin command every mile or so to see if they stay on wing.

2) If 1 doesn't work, I'll go all Mad Max in my top turret and wipe out my squadron.

3) If 2 seems to be defeating the object I can always try telling the other planes to "Loiter Here" for a few mins so they can;t catch me up before my bombs hit the ground.

It's just a pain that it can't be done properly without having to fudge the AI with dodgy radio commands.

Oh and 'Deadmeat'... You could always record your own radio messages and replace the current ones. At least then you could have a giggle everytime you go off course.

That message is triggered by the distance between you and the leader exceeding 2km. It doesn't matter whether the distance is horizontal or vertical either so even if you're at the same place on the map but more than 2000m difference in altitude it will trigger. My advice - replace the wav file with a blank one of the same name or delete it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I just posted my hud_msg file which has got a few modifications to what appears on your screen in-game. I forgot it had some swear words, so it's in the ether until the mods can approve it. Hopefully it'll turn up soon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That`s what I do. It`s so nice to be able to defend myself in a dogfight without being shouted at cos I`m not in formation. In fact, I changed quite a few files for better immersion. For instance, if you crash land, youe leader or someone else says, "Return to base!" Yea, right. I changed this so now he says, "Are you alright?" makes better sense.

Good alternatives to existing messages:

"Stay on Leader's Course" could be "Go get 'em tiger!" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"Return to base" could be "Did anyone see a parachute??"

A while ago I was considering altering the messages and files to use samples of movies for various comedy effect. ie using "Somebody cover me, Ahm goin iiiiiin!!!" from ThumbWars to replace the standard ground attack message. "I'm hit! I can't stay with you" by Wedge from Star Wars; "There goes my OTHER wing" from Hot Shots. There's plenty out there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

These are just off the top of my head. Any more suggestions? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I've made some B25 missions and I remember there being something about how you set the target in the FMB that would cause the idiotic dive bombing. If I remember correctly, if a specific target is "set" at the target waypoint, they will dive but if you leave it as an area attack they will not.

[insert loud sigh here] Mr Maddox... Heeeeeeelp! There's a whole load of HE111 and B25 missions that need fixin'.

Thanks for the update Oilburner

My wife asks me who I'm talking to when she hears "F*** you" coming from my office. I don't like being yelled at in any language. My fix has been promoting myself to top slot and yelling at the rest of the pilots. That's the beauty of sims.

Rejoin seems to work for your flight but not for the entire squad. If you change course, you are on your own. I've used this to hit multiple targets in one mission. Let the rest of the lads hit the Gerry boat while me and my mates hit an airfield. Silly, but fun.

What I hate most of canned messages is when you hit accelerated time, and some flight of say, 12 planes is about to land at the airbase. And you have that "Abort landing! Repeat! Abort landing!" about 800 times, and it sounds the same in all languages.

Or when you're about to save the a$s of your leader, and he still complains of you leaving the formation...

Partly true. And if you set a 'normfly' waypoint just behind the 'Gattack' they will not engage in strafing anything either.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The B-25's have been given a "fighter-bomber" attack mode. The fixes are complicated. Essentially, if you want to bomb like a B-17, then pick a non-tactical target like an oil refinery and make sure there are no tac targets like planes or guns anywhere close to it.

That and a lot of punching "rejoin" should get you through.

Attacking airfields at low level is going to give you a lot of headaches. The AI B-25's will foolishly attempt to strafe at 100 meters altitude.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I just love the way that the vector you get to rejoin is usually 90-180 degrees out.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I get this a lot, but it`s not due to Time acceleration. It`s due to DCG and you get a lot of planes in it. So at the end of a flight, the `Can I land` calls can go on forever and even interrupt battle comms.

Again, editing the wav files solves the problem somewhat. I simply delete most of the `Can I land calls` and ` Go around` and also the Wingman callsigns except leader`s. I now hear the odd landing in call, but now it`s much less intrusive. No need to do anything quite so desperate as some do like muting Voice altogther.

Always make a copy of your sample/speech files first.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I forgot my fav. Tracers flying by, command wing to cover you, "I've got you covered" and he is no where in sight. Now you are getting strikes, ask him to cover you, "I've got you covered". Next thing, you are slowly dropping in your chute with no AI wing in sight and wondering where he is?
