Of course the big daddy of them all Bullit comes to mind wiht Steve McQueen.. (I just saw him in someones sig which made me think of this... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif) and The French Connection.... but my alltime favorite is that chase scene in Ronin with DiNiro & Reno... What a chase scene... barreling through those narrow streets at incredible speeds.. There have been others that were god.. but some of them like the one in MatrixII seem contrived... but that scene in Ronin was just... mind blowing.. What's you take?

... Elwood Blues destroys most of the police vehicles in Illinois.

... One of the Bourne films also had a pretty good chase scene.

Probably a UK thing.

Not exactly a car chase, but 'C'etait une rendez-vous' lists very high. Even more so, because it wasn't staged at all. That's a real drive throughout Paris, with speeds in excess of 160kph (that's 100mph for those not familiar with the metric system)
For those ignorant of the movie:

Yeah, Bullit, Ronin, and French Connection all stand out in my mind as having memorable car chase scenes.

Even though they tend to be over the top, there are some fun car chases in some of the James Bond movies.

Mmmmmm, car chases. Y'all got the great one's listed. Especially, that pron movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

"To Live and Die in LA" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090180/) has a pretty good chase, too.

BTW, the Jason Bourne Collection (http://www.target.com/Bourne-Collection-Identity-Supremacy-Ultimatum/dp/B000W07EKW/sr=1-2/qid=1197475945/ref=sr_1_2/601-2366921-9408963?ie=UTF8&index=dvd&field-original-keywords=bourne&rh=k%3Aborn&page=1) hit the stores yesterday. The original "Mad Max" movie has some great high speed action (also "The Road Warrior")..."La Mans" (1971) has some real well filmed high speed driving (really gives you the feeling of speed)...The original "Gone in 60 seconds" (1974?)...and their is a Robert Mitchum movie called "Thunder Road" from 1958 that is really good...

Sharpe26
12-12-2007, 09:55 AM
the car chases in the first Blues Brothers movie were the best I ever saw. Ronin would definetly come in second.

btw, according to the credits of Ronin most of the driving was done by Formula One drivers.

also its a mad mad mad mad world has a few pretty good car chases.

Ben Hur's got a great circuit scene in it, also The Fall of the Roman Empire, the original Gladiator, with a frankly deranged Christopher Plumber racing the roads of Germania.

Otherwise, agree entirely with all of the above.

Bullitt's chase scene is great. But after watching it so many times, you see where they've filmed the same sequence from different angles then spliced the film together. Still pretty cool driving. Gotta love those 60s muscle cars.

Steve McQueen's Mustang was powered by a 427 Ford. (two 1968 mustange were such modified for the film).
Originally it was a 390 cid Mustang.
An easy engine swap as the engines share all mounts, bolt patterns and external dimensions.

For those who do not know, the 427 was in the same family
of V-8s, the so called "FE" series.
Displacements in the FE series were....
332
352
360(truck only)
390
406
427
428

The 427 had the same stroke as the 390
with a larger bore size.

The 428 was a longer stroke with the same bore size as the 406.

Still all FE series engines.

Defo! another of my faves
Although not much of a chase just a Kinda Race/ Trip

Love that American muscle.

Did Taylor and Wilsons '56 Chevy (With a 454?). Beat a "HEMI challenger with a 727 and a Torqueflite?
I know Warren Oates's car was a GTO I am talking about earlier on in the film.

Seems we're all agreed that Ronin/Bullit win the prize. More or less.

Best sequences?

There's that phase in Michael Mann's film "Heat" from the bank job to the get away that's just jaw dropping, it's not really a car chase but it's a choreographed 'escape' that starts with the gang being rumbled by the Feds as they egress the bank, climaxes with a sort of tactical advance to defeat the cops, and ends with the bad guys dispersing/being taken down. From the point of view of narration it is the point that brings the two antogonists into direct and fatal conflict, the point at which they must deny their similarity and their empathy and seek to destroy the other.

Well, friggin' rocked is all I am saying.

vanishing point (remake is better if you ask me, with Viggo Mortensen as Kowalski) has good chases, Charger vs Challenger, good stuff

worst chase is in the Joe Don Baker film "Mitchell"

funniest is in "Mitchell" when MST3K did it

A DVD showing the exploits of a daredevil kart racer barrelling through the streets of Quebec at speeds up to 160kmh is about to go on sale on the internet.

Canadian police are trying to track down the producers of the DVD, which they believe was filmed last November. They say that, if found, the kart driver will be charged with reckless driving.

Called Kartvader, the DVD has more than 40 minutes of footage of a high-speed racing kart being driven on public roads at night.

On the www.kartvader.com (http://www.kartvader.com) website, the producers claim the run was "ripped in one shot" with the kart covering 68km of highway, streets, parks and tunnels during its illicit run.

A trailer for the DVD on the site shows footage filmed from a camera mounted on the driver's helmet as well as a rear-facing kart-mounted camera. Other footage is captured by a bystander, suggesting the involvement of more than one person. The site allows visitors to "pre-order" the DVD for $US19.95 ($27) ahead of its release on Monday.

The film has Quebec police flummoxed, with one officer expressing surprise that the kart driver managed to avoid being reported to police, let alone detected or caught.

"It's surprising to us that Kartvader is supposed to have circulated through our streets for 40 minutes and nobody called the police," Constable Jean Manguy told CBC Montreal. "[This person] was lucky to end up unharmed. I don't think other people would be that lucky.""
