Hello there!
Be prepared for steep learning curve.
Ask away if you have problems with the game.

Oh and buy Forgotten Battles Gold.

Funny...I thought on getting X45 and got a Cyborg EVO too...extremely fine bar the fact that rarely it ceases working (all lights are on, but none of the buttons/axes are functional...most likely software/lag related, given my low-end rig) unless you hit Esc and then resume.

BTW, the learning curve isn't that steep (and that's me, I have never laid my hands on a serious air sim). As it turned out it was all common sense, especially after I read the forums a bit and this: http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/cemguide/intro.htm

79% is a fine note.I`m sure the guy didn`t find all the flaws/good things about this game but I`d definitely agree.

One thing is for sure.FB is a whole different game than LOMAC.

Play the demo and if you`ll like it than you must buy FBGold.

The reviewers (at least those whose reviews I've read) often completely missed the mark, even though they were compelled to give the game a decent score. I just love their cynical references to either Me-262 being "[too advanced for the scope of the game]" or TB-3 being obsolete, etcetera. You would think that they should fall over and capitulate before the sheer NUMBER of flyable and well-modelled aircraft, but no, they just have to biatch about THAT! Ironic, isn't it? If the game truly had only the Il-2 series flyable, everyone would whine on about how the game is behind the times and would most certainly be outraged if Oleg cut Me-262. You can never make every(or any?)one happy, I suppose.

BTW, this game really is just sheer joy. Personally I spend large amounts of time simply messing around with the mission builder, trying out the handling and weaponry of all the planes you can fly.

New to IL2, much like me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll give some advice (from a newbie to a newbie): Don't get discouraged! This really does have a steep learning curve, but so far it's SO worth it. In fact I've all but shelved the few FPS games I have, along with every other game, just to concentrate my playing time on this.

But don't get discouraged. You will most likely stink at flying your first time. You'll turn too sharply, stall and spin out of control, crash, never land successfully, let alone shoot any enemies with accuracy! But it will get better, and it will get addictive. You think RL fighter pilots were thrust into action after a few measly hours of training?

(oh, and adjust your weapon convergence settings in the Arming screen. This helped me immensely! The default 500m settings are too big)

EDIT: The learning curve is steep because of the complexity of the sim, like the weapon convergences I just mentioned. There's others like trimming your plane, knowing your gauges, etc. It's not hard, it's just...complex. And wonderfully so!

Wellcome to Forgotten Board.

That TB~3 they say is Oboslete, use it as your first early flight trainer but turn OFF the mulitple engine controls. It takes off and lands pretty much by itself even on the rough ground far away from airports.

You can totally control those weird icons of text that follow each airplane you see. That kinda grossed me out when I first got FB, but I learned you can control them or turn them all off.

If you experience a mysterious engine failure in some "obsolete" planes I~16, I~153, J8A, CR.42, G.50, or Hurricane, that's the engine carb cutout from pushing a little too hard on the stick (negative gee). My first week of FB I thought my I~153 was running out of fuel within 5 minutes of takeoff and I could not figure out why. I was totally lost cos I back then I didn't pay attention to my engine guages and so didn't notice the needles shaking every time I pushed the stick hard forward like a Newbie.

Buy the sim. You wont be sorry. Get the FB GOLD pack and before you even fly it.. if you can hold out..LOL.. come back here and download the 2.04 patch. THEN start flying. I suggest you get the SaitekX45.. cut to the chase. This sim is made for a HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) setup. The learning curve is VERY steep, but that is a good thing. It is a very very challenging product. As far as that goes this is much more a sim than a game. You cant just hop in and take off and start shooting down the bad guys. If you want something you can just hop in and start "playing" right out of the box then maybe this sim isnt for you. But if you want something that will stretch you, teach you, challenge you, thrill you...more than any other computer software you have ever tried then give FB a shot. Since you love airplanes this sim is halfway in your heart already. True.. it isnt like the jet sims.....I personnally dont like the jet sims.... I prefer the upclose and persoanl WW2 style combat. The sim is extremely scalable.. you can go from no death,no stalls, unlimittd ammo & fuel to closed cockpit, head on a swivel, knuckle crunching red hot action..... and in an instant.. the black screen of death. I cant overstate how important your stick is. Dont skimp there. I always recommend an X45 because though it is a bit more pricey than say the other Saitek offerings it isnt as pricey as the CH or Cougars but it does give you the flexibility of being able to fully utilize all the features of the sim once you begin to "get it". There is nothing more frustrating, and I speak from personal experience, than starting out doing something and finding out that you are outgrowing it sooner than expected and saying.. "I should have gotten the XXX" I have done that with RAM,video cards, joysticks, mics, speakers and even CPUs. Now I look at what I want and if I cant afford it at the moment then I just wait rather than by cheap to save a buck and then buy again in 6 months. The Saitek sticks are the best affordable ones on the market at the moment and out of all of them the X45 offers you the most future flexibility. Good luck and welcome to our world. You are gonna love it.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I don't know...I'm somehow more confident with my keyboard, being a lifelong mouse+keyboard user. All I use the joystick for is flaps, firing and moving the plane's stick. Everything else is on the keyboard, which has more buttons than any throttle can dream of.

I have the EVO stick and it's perfect for the game. I use my mousewheel for prop pitch.

This is a good "kick the tires, light the fires" kinda airplane game. No radar and Sidewinders, but watching your guns tear the sheetmetal off your opponent's plane 100 meters away is more fun in my book.

It has a steep learning curve, yeah, so the best way to learn the game is to fly everything first and then pick a plane you like and stay with it till you learn everything. Each one has it's pluses and minuses so take notes.

The I-16, P-11, Hurricane make good starting planes. And don't worry about the jets: they are in there too.

BTW: don't worry about any flak you may catch for flying "noob" planes like the high end 109's, Franks, Lavochkins, or Spitfires. You pay 40 bucks for a game you get to fly what you want. Some of these guys would have called Richtofen a noob for flying a DR.1 instead of a Halberstad boxkite.

Jets are rare online though, so be prepared to fly mostly propjobs.

The 262 is too advanced for the scope of the game?? But it's a W.W.II sim and the 262 really did fly in W.W.II!!! It might be beyond the scope of a W.W.I sim!!! But W.W.II!?!?!?!?!

Il2 is the only game I've played consistently since its release in 2001.

Learned some stuff on these boards too from a helpful and often funny community.

Just like Hotel California, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

The Il-2 is probably the best training machine out there. It's easy to get off the ground and very tolerant of rough handling. Also, stay a good mile away from Italian aircraft...

If you have the gold pack (FB + AEP) you don't need the other patches. Just install FB, AEP over it and then the 2.01/2.04 patch.

The other patches are only necessary if you don't plan on installing the Ace Expansion Pack.

Also, there is nothing wrong with enjoying both IL2 and Lomac http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I know I do http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Install FB and AEP (when you get them in the gold pack http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) should give you version 2.0

then you want the 2.01 patch for AEP (102MB so get downloading!)

Followed by the 2.04 patch (latest - only 19mb)
