Could be, the're trying to fix some of the problems prople are having with new patch. This might take a while.

My guess is that they are incorporating bug fixes from beta patch in the "previously promised" new plane patch so that in the end we get a better product. Oleg has a history of putting more in his patches than advertised so that users benefit in the long run.

Waiting is hard sometimes but it will be worth it as Oleg has proven many times.

11-29-2004, 12:44 PM
Well I thought that there was a problem with the Betty. If you notice on some of the videos the way the torpedo is carried is wrong. (On the real Betty the bombay doors are removed and the torpedo is cradled in the divet (for lack of a better term) where the bombay doors used to be. But the model is wrong.

I thought that this was being corrected and was holding things up. (But I have been wrong before).

Funny, all I'm dreaming about is a return to smooth online flying...the 3.01 patch seems to have mucked up things to the point where it's almost unflyable. I had little or no lag before the patch, but now i'm having all kinds of 2-3 second hangups. And yes, I've tried all of the suggestions in this forum and have even upgraded to a 9800 pro from my previous ti-4600...all to no avail.

PLEASE Ivan, tell me this is something other people are experiencing so I know I'm not losing my mind.....

The facility for user adjustable FM's (and environmental variables? - ie. density and drag etc.) would be a great idea - the community could collectively refine all the various planes' flight models - and take that burden off the team.

Yes, it would also take the burden of responsibility for historical corectness of the planes.

CFS2 anyone?

killer2359
11-30-2004, 03:57 AM
Yes, that's pretty much why I used the word "community" - I can imagine that there'd be all sorts of silly stuff done but I'd also hope that amongst the silliness there would develop a core of accurate and realistic models that would be formulated, shared and accepted by the broader PF community. I guess it would add another hassle to online play - I suppose the host server would have to call the shots as to what models were used?

Athosd
11-30-2004, 04:40 AM
Killer2359 - open flight models will never happen in this sim (not a value judgment - just a, paraphrased, statement from the man himself).
There are plenty of sims with open flight models, people can tweak those to their hearts content.
IL2 is not obliged to be the same. I respect Oleg's stance on this - particularly given his readiness to adjust things where good arguments are presented.

It is true that open standards have helped extend the lives of some other sims - though largely because the developers stopped supporting them and left further refinement to the community. IL2 however is still supported.

Cheers

Athos

Hi,

@ CrazyIvan.

I'm not moaning about the patching because it's useful to be involved in the 'process of betterment' for the sim but I have a question relating to the dedicated server patch which has arisen through discussion on the server we run...

Assuming that Oleg doesn't normally release piecemeal patches (which he didn't prior to PF) is it fair to have the impression that the beta dedicated server has been released to pacify some of the more vocal whiners as it is known the the non-beta version (presumably, that supports the add on aircraft) is still "some way off".....?

I'm just curious because it could mean one of the following:
a. A smallish patch will be offered 'soon' to bring the dedicated server up to non-beta status.
b. There will be another n hundred MB download once the dedicated server reaches non-beta status + having to set things up again.
c. None of the above because Oleg has concocted a plan so cunning that you could literally stick a tail on it and call it a fox.

Are you at liberty to comment?

Regards,
Norris

Final dedicated patch will be smaller i hope.

I don`t think so, my impression is, final dedicated server patch will be just new planes inclusion and some corrections to current dedicated - beta.

My understanding of this approach is pretty simple. To get community involved. IL2 series is one complex ps of software and taking under considerations viraety of hardware setups, Maddox crew took a right approach this time. Small patches with corrections of found bugs is the way to go IMO. Doesn`t matter, client or dedciated, they are trying to get game to its top performance and i think they are being successful with it. I was a beta tester for pervious versions, including Pacific Fighters and i`ll tell you what...it`s a freaking full time job. 200 planes to check, 200 FMs to look at, AI, Multiplayer..etc, etc... i don`t know where to begin. And all that just for a handfull of people, who has life besides IL2 series, you know what i mean. Not easy sitting there till 3-4am almost every night (pre-release times) testing plane after plane and so on. But now, it`s different... now 1000s of people are in the process and it`s a good thing, it`s extra 1000s pairs of eyes and extra 1000s hardware setups - which benefits all of us. Just my 02c.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'll play Devil's Advocate, here, as usual...

I sort of agree that incremental 'builds' are good but that's mainly for items in development. Whilst it could be argued that PF is always under development, it could make it difficult for those administering servers to keep up with it all, not to mention those without high speed connections having to download large client-side patches just to keep their hand in flying online (and yes, if they fly online, they very probably have high speed connections, anyway).

I'm just pointing out that this approach can be a double-edged sword (and I'm sure 1C have considered this anyway) and some people might get the impression that things are still very much in a state of flux.

Now, onto the point about what 'soon' meant http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Any comment on that?

Cheers,
Norris

No Norris, don`t have any comments on that "Soon" part http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As far was servers go, they are the guys with great internet capabilities... for them those patches are peanuts IMO. Clients on other hand... could be a different story. But agree with me on one thing...small 20-40mb patches are easier on the client then 200-300MB ones and they bring noticable changes. But even if this could be a double-edged sword, it`s been a successful one IMO.

I absolutely agree with CrazyIvan, speaking from the heart as an user.

IMO this approach is the best, for the entire community aswell as the developer. for non-gold releases like betaserver, I think it´s more important to have them servers running in HL with onlinewars going on at the latest client status than it was before. you´ve had to have at least 2-3 versions of aep/pf on your harddrive to play. even if the ded.server is beta and has lots of freezes and stutters, its better than not playing onlinewars at all.

I`d still like an estimated ETA for the patch.
I think I`ve wasted about 3 man hours so far logging on to the forums just to see if it is finally ready. That time could have been spent much more profitably playing WoV.

Yes I know 2 weeks.
Anyway just got the E.E. Lightning for SFP1/WoV so no need to worry about the patch for a few months.
Some one give us a shout when BoB comes out and if I`ve time I`ll look at it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I remember the long, long waiting time for the one and only definitive IL-2: Forgotten Battles patch. I'd rather Oleg kept the community vibrant by releasing intermediate patches, than one big one at the end (when nobody would be listening anymore).
