This question has come up a few times in the past... Take a look at these old posts (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=search&reqWords=u-571&use_forum_scope=on&forum_scope=857101043) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think most people here (myself included) think that U-571 is a bad joke! Even the the author regrets it! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5263164.stm)

What did you like about the film?

A good effort for the History Channel

but they weren't the producers

so that lowers the opinion greatly.

The only part of that movie I liked, was the opening scene, when the U-boat attacked, and sunk the freighter. The depth charge attack that followed was O.K. as well.

The movie "The Enemy Below" was on one of the cable stations the other day, and let me just say, that movie made U571 look like Das Boot! The interior of the sub did'nt resemble a U-Boat in the least! The scene towards the end when the crew starts singing (yeah RIGHT:HERE WE ARE MISTER DESTROYER!!!) the radio man put the record on what looked to be a 1960's style record player!

And if that's not enough, when they prepare to launch the spread of torpedos against the destroyer in the end scene, I swear I cought a glimpse of the torpedomen holding the torpedo in their hands, and shoving it into the tube!

U-571 is pure entertainment. There are many actual submarine stories out there that would have made for a good movie, like U 505. Or how about the actual capture of the enigma?

yea, none of was really real, but I thought it was good to watch. I liked, and there isn't any real historical relation in it, but I thought it was kind of cool action movie.

U-571 = Another case of history being re-written by Hollywood http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Alot of the old movies would just use anything as "filler" to represent enemy vehicles or ships. Watching movies like Battle of the Bulge and seeing US M-60 tanks drive around as Tigers is pretty pathetic.

Well, its interesting to read that the author of U-571 himself regrets at least partially to have made that film they way it was done.

But its funny that the critics only argument for calling the movie rubbish was the alteration of history.

It seems that no one adressed the lame storybook, the cheap acting, and extra dumb dialogues throughout the movie. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Not to mention the wartime propaganda stereotype nazi Kaleun firing on survivors in the water http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Perhaps they heard of what some US sub did to the survivors of a Jap troop ship they fished. Want to see the footage? It's on one of the 'Color of War' dvd's, off the top of my head I don't remember which one, there was like 7 disks in the series.

I saw the movie, and knew it was just hollywood. Come on now, 1st, it's just a movie. Authentication and hollywood is like a running joke. Personally I think they should have at least run the credits showing the capture / recovered enigma timeline before the movie started.

If I remember rightly, the only reason the timeline was added to the credits was the disgust and outcry by members of the public and organisations involved with keeping the capture of the Enigma from U-110 alive.
