In this mission I am in an F4UC flying back alone when I come across a Japanese recon plane near my carrier, so I spash it. (I am carrying rockets and bombs)
Then, here come 4 Betty bombers flying low and heading in to hit my carrier, probably with torpedos. I take them out with my rockets and my 1 big bomb; not easy, but it works. Since they are low and close to the water, the concussion of my bomb blows one of them up because I drop it close enough, and those nasty gunners want to get me. So-far I still have alot of 20MM ammo left. I circle back to the Lex.
In from the west come 2 A6M7 aces wanting to eat my lunch. I splash them but with a little damage and I need to open the cowl flaps to cool the engine, lucky to be alive, just tapping the trigger button to conserve ammo, just tap tap taparoo. Just a short little burst and the thats all it takes to de-wing an A6M7 and watch it flip and spin into the ocean below. They must have been escorts for the bombers but were late or something, hell I don't know, all I know is they wanted to kill me, so I killed them.
I turn back toward the Lex again, but get jumped by another-lone A6M. Came out of no-where. He shoots holes in me. I think maybe I am a gonner. I have enough altitude so I do a split-S and nearly black out completely from the pull out, meanwhile he has climbed and has come out of an Imelman and is diving toward me head-on. I jig and jive and release a burst and luckily knock off the right half of his horizontal stab as we miss colliding by about a foot, I felt a shudder as his bullets ripped by.
But I kick the rudder and look over my shoulder as he spins in and splashes. He never got out, good for him, shark bait.
Now I'm sort of limping back, but well well, a couple of KI84s wanting to rip my *** up. Dam what a pain in the butt. And I made this mission myself, why do I put myself through this?
Luckily I spot them in time, (I made the damn mission) I fly head-on at full speed, about 510 KPH. They come in fast and menacing, I may die here now, just at the last second, I pull up and realease a short burst of 20MM as I fly through a ball of fire and debri, which was, a moment ago, this KI84s wingman man in trail of him. I pull up hard and nearly black out, I level out, he does the same, we fly head-on, we shoot and miss. I pull around hard to the left and dive to build up energy, where the hell is he? I look up and through the canopy glass and bright sun I see he has climbed up and has done some kind of a stupid hammer-head stall. Whats this guy a rookie? I catch him just as he rolls around exposing his belly and I let him have a taparoo of 20MM in the gut. He goes down and eats it. Splash.
Man I HAVE to be running out of good luck.
I am tired, I want to go call it a day. I go to 270, in search of the carrier, it should be in sight any second.
There it is, the Lex, finally, I get clearance for landing, fly over and check the deck, I circle around: flaps, gear down, canopy open, hook down, cowl flaps, get her lined up, looks good.
Engine looses power, I ditch in the sea a few hundred meters from the Lexington.
This rubber raft sucks, but atleast I'm alive.

I hope the escorting destroyers picked you up before the bottle of scotch you hid in the raft ran out. Great story!

Cool Read!

I'll take a splash landing over a smash landing anyday.

Thanks for taking the time to write that. It was quite entertaining!!!

(Man, I was looking back and I found this post, forgot all about it.)
But that WAS in fact how the story ended: When they picked me up, one of the recuers said: "Gosh Oh Mighty Morris, you are a real killer!"
I responded: " You bet I'm a killer, I just killed a whole pint! -hicup"
