FEAR

I play all the good PC games I can find, hate console games except for a select few, they are just too shallow. At the moment I am playing

X3-Reunion (Amazing game, like a 'Super Elite' if you ever played Elite) Picked it up 2nd hand for a bargain price and so glad I did, it rocks

NeverwinterNights 2 - Samey to first but OK.

Armed Assault - Buggy and I need a new system to play it, but it will 'grow' thanks to the amazing Opflash modding scene.

STALKER (Just Amazing)

I like games which move the genres forward and push the boundaries of gaming. These are almost exclusively PC games. I would much rather have a buggy, ambitious, ground breaking game than a stable, generic, liniar game.

PC gaming is where its at.

I've been thinking about STALKER. What's the gameplay like?

Xiolablu3

I love it mate. Its like a FPS RPG with realistic weapons, set in a nuclear Chernobyl.

Its a little buggy, bu thats to be expected with such an ambitious game.

If you liked Deus Ex 1 and Half Life 1 you will love STALKER.

Aside from teh Main plot you can choose to ally with either of 2 sides, 'Duty' or 'Freedom', or just go out on your own. You can mod weapons and add grenade lanchers, scopes, silencers etc.

Its just cool. Best game I have played for months. If you like FPS games which push the boundaries, and dont mind a few bugs (inevitable in such a massive dynamic world) get STALKER.

The only reason I could see someone not liking it, is if they liked linear scripted corridor shooters with no thought attached. In STALKER you can pretty much go whereever you want right from the start..(Howwever you will die if you just jump into every situation, you only have a pistol at the start http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Definitely one of the top 3 games of the year, even tho more games are to come out! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I cannot see many of them having STALKERS depth.

I haven't been playing much other then IL-2 1946 lately, but here's whats on my HD right now:

Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II
Tron 2.0
Flanker 2.5
Lock On
Rome Total War + Barbarian Invasion
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries
Medal of Honor

Granted, the flight sims get the most play time, but since my time is limited, I usually go with IL-2.

Also, on occasion, I'll play the Xbox, mainly Brothers In Arms: Earned In Blood or Star Wars Battlefront.

Mech Warrior 4 was cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I never played Balders Gate, I was straight to NWN.

If you like MEdal Of Honour, ou should get
COD 1 + United OFfensive, and maybe COD2.

Baldur's Gate is amazing, though the graphics are **** compared to NWN. I highly recommend picking up Baldur's Gate II, and if possible find a lot of free time. It's a 200 hour+ opus, lot's of side quests, the main quest is at least half that total.

A good addition to IL2 is Red Orchestra. You'll like the real ballistics put on every round in game as well as the NO bunny hopping. It really requires team tactics and no lone wolfing.

Others I play:

LOMAC Flaming Cliffs
FSX

Have you noticed there is barely a console game in anyones list.

I hate the way console games are made purely for the money.

I know PC games are supposed to make money too, but it seems like the better PC games developers put a lot of love and much more creative and ambitious content into their games.

Not to mention all the mods etc available.

You can tell
Deus Ex 1,
Halflife1,
X3-Reunion,
COunter Strike,
IL2,
STALKER,
MOrrowind/Oblivion,
System Shock 2
OPeration FLashpoint/Armed Assault
HIdden and Dangerous 1/2
VAmpire: The MAsquerade,
Far Cry,
etc, etc are labours of love. The games devs really believed in the game they were making.

Rather than Tekken 23 or Gran Turismo 62 which are released purely to make more money.

I love my PC, may PC gaming live forever. Its not just about the money, which is why I think it will.

I used to play other games like Warcraft 3 and Halflife2 and Myth and Soulblighter, but that was at least 2 years ago. These days, nothing interests me besides the Il2 series. I mean nothing! Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 (if it ever happens) could change all that though.

The only other game I can see myself playing anytime soon is, yup... you guessed it, Storm of War: Battle of Britain.

heheh yeah to be able to afford all those titles I guess you need to work 12hr days...

Bearcat - I am still fiddlin' with the FSX settings but so far, it is stable for the most part...sometimes switching views will cause a ctd I fly in the pit but like to switch to flyby alot...these models look sooo good in various light and the self casting shadows along with the high-shine finish on these planes is mesmerising.

One thing I have learned is to ignore all the tweaks and simply use the main sliders on the settings page - full on every slider but traffic - that one I have at half....this seems to give me the best performance...and set the target frames at 20 - don't tell FSX you want more..instead ask FSX to optimise for 20...you get more, but it wont show on the ingame counter. FRAPS will tell you what you are really getting. I think the 'target frame rate' setting just tells the software to back off on some renders...? You still get smooth goodness.

The FMs are well varied and 'feel' very accurate...I have flown in a C-47 and this one is very close - the proof is in its short field t/o and landing performance as well as the heavy yet responsive controls at low speeds.

The Grumman Goose is a real pleasure as is the DH Beaver and for 'Extra' fun the Extra300 flies like a fighter.

Deluxe version includes a nice glider that I have yet to fly....I was sidetracked by the Bell Ranger Helo.

..helicopters fly like they were never supposed to, and I finally landed one...where I intended even.

this Gooneybird flies sweetly and this is only one of 4 or 5 different paints it is available in - I use the island scheme because I have been flying island hopping free flights using the ingame Garmin GPS and setting variable weather...nothing like a little turbulence to keep you sharp on short final..

the 300 and

My God, Heywood...what kind of setup does it take to run FSX like that?

Seriously, I've always loved the FS series, but I've been badly bogged down by FSX, even with what I consider a pretty decent video card (X1900XT, 512mb).

If you mind me asking, what sort of system setup do you have?

heywooood
05-03-2007, 11:24 PM
P4 3.4 MSI P965 platinum mobo 2 gigs ram 2HD @ 7200rpm a lowly Nvidia 7600GS GPU w/512 onboard ram and onboard sound realtek style...midstream overall...FSX really demands a 512 GPU the 128's are outgunned and even the 256's struggle apparently.

I fly the FSX but mostly in sparse, island areas like Aruba etc... I have all the sliders on the main settings page on full except for 'traffic' that one is around half setting...

I do not go into the 'custom' settings atall as when I did alter those before it only made frame rates slower and reduced the candy too...go figure.

I turn off the 'bloom' and the 'sun prism' effect or whatever its called but all other effects are maxed.

I have the res at 1400x900 cause thats my monitors native res. I have the A/A off in the game setting but use the GPU to run A/A @ 4x

Some say to switch the card to application controlled and turn it on in the game settings but I tried it and for me it is faster this way- your results might be different.

I still get reduced rates over dense forested areas so I avoid them...at least until the multi core patch is released then we'll see.

I like this kind of flying - it is different from combat but it has its own challenges like making a flight plan, using the radios properly, correctly entering landing patterns, using variable weather and having random aircraft failures...all very different from '46 style...and still quite a blast believe me.

There are alot of other aspects of FSX I still haven't even touched (got it two weeks ago - thanks GoGamer) so I am still finding new stuff.

If THEATRE OF WAR, which I am just about to install, is good, I 'spect I'll be spending a lot of time hangin' around with Char Bs and kickin' Das Heer arse. Occasional trips to FSX to brain myself with the GORGEOUS graphics of the Flight Replicas 109s and scenery then back to 46 to blow things up. I have issues. The "Yankee Air Pirate" scenarios for WINGS OVER VIETNAM are really incredible, and I ought to use them more. They are kinda like putting a V8 in a VW bug, but....

I really enjoyed Jade Empire, but I agree it wasn't as good as KotOR. But, it's still a very good game. I recommend it if you are looking for something a little different as far as setting. I actually started a new character last night, dragging myself away from IL-2 for a bit......well, only because my wife was on the computer! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What sort of game is it? Is it any good?

Jade Empire is KOTOR meets Hong Kong Kung Fu. Its a very good game, particularly storywise. The console origins are evident in the design of the different areas, but to be honest, it doesnt detract from the game much.

Like all Bioware titles, it has a great storyline, and that really makes the game shine. Plot is right out of a kung fu flick, but its well done and has a host of pretty entertaining NPC's. Much like KOTOR, you have two different ideological paths to follow, the Way of the Open Hand (Harmony, aka the Light Side) and the Way of the Closed Fist (Selfishness, aka the Dark Side).

The fighting system and the styles are well done, although I found that fights at later levels tended to be pretty easy against single opponenets due to the styles becoming too powerful.

Overall;
Great Story
Good Music and Sound
Different Culture/Setting
Kung Fu RPG (definately unique)

If you liked KOTOR or similar games, you will enjoy Jade Empire. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was looking through my box O' games last night, and found a bunch that I either can't play anymore, they suck, or I played to death. One of them was a game called Terra Nova: Strike Force Centari. Anyone heard of it? XP Does't like it, though it should work with DOS-Box. It was a FPS with some nice squad based elements, in which you use powered armor. Think Starship Troopers (the book, not the **** movie) or Elementals from the Battletech series and you get the idea. It was a really fun game, way ahead of it's time, but was overshadowed by another FPS at the time: Quake. They came out at the same time, and Quake had more appeal. I might try to run this one again in the near future.

I forgot about Rise of Nations, thats a classic!

X3 is well worth it if you have the time, its just like an evolved Elite, with all the good things from Elite and a lot more added on too. Rather than it just being about trading in a ship, you can build your own factories and produce resources, while running a complete fleet of ships.

You start off a lowly man with few credits and a small ship, and build yourself up to King of the Universe. Right now after about 4 days (88 hours) of playing I have 4 factories and about 15 ships. Great fun! Some of hte ships are massive, it feels like attacking a Star Destroyer in an X- Wing, skimming over the surface dodging struts while blasting it with laZers and Gatling guns.

I enjoyed KOTOR 2 more despite the unfinished storyline. It was just a lot easier to relate to and "play the role". The added features were a plus too. KOTOR 1 was absolutely amazing too, though. I remember first playing it and walking through Taris. Phenomenal.

I'm just sad that I can't play either on my laptop. It's got some issue with Intel integrated graphics or something. Big bummer, as I've gotten to the point where I haven't played the games long enough to enjoy them again.

Hi everybody!
Two main genres on my shelf: WWII air sims and strategy games from 90´s to nowadays:

- Microprose Pacific air war: 1942 (great old game, you were even able to play from aircraft carriers much better than on CFS3, for example).
- Jane´s WWII_Fighters (great game and extraordinary comunity for mod, etc.).
- CFS3 (worst of all of these, I just played for a short period).
- Il2 series

On the other hand:
- Panzer general / Pacific general
- UFO series from the very begining, including Afterlight recently released.
- Master of Orion

Today only Il2-46 and Afterlight only, but after such a comprehensive review of so many interesting games, I may dedicate some time to FSX, SILENT HUNTER IV and others! Thanks,

Nan.

I play IL2 Daily but I do admit to having some "girls on the side" if you catch my drift.

1. "Far Cry" - First real FPS I'd did since Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem.

2. "Call of Duty 2" - Still fire this puppy up once a month to get my trigger time.

3. "Brothers In Arms" - Just started playing this.

4. "Darkstar One" - It's no "Privateer" but it'll do for now.

5. "The Chronicles of Riddick" - Just finished this and will likely play it again on hardest level. Wow, deep, hard, tricky, and fun to boot, what a game.
