View Full Version : ANNOUNCING WW1 CAMPAIGN FOR FORGOTTEN BATTLES (Many Screens)

JTFM
10-22-2006, 10:10 PM
For those awaiting Knights of the Sky, I am pleased to announce the pending release of Bloody April, The Battle of Arras, a complete faux World War 1 campaign for Forgotten Battles that will enable you to fly as Luftstreikräfte luminary Rittmeister Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen?universally renowned as ?The Red Baron??and lead Jasta 11 into their epic April 1917 clash with the Royal Flying Corps for control of the fighting skies above northeastern France.

The Bloody April Campaign is classified as a ?faux? World War 1 campaign because?obviously?Forgotten Battles is a World War II simulation that does not contain World War 1 airplanes. The means of overcoming this?and the heart of the Bloody April Campaign?is the prodigious use of WW1 skins. When applied to several airplanes already contained within Forgotten Battles, and with the player suspending a certain amount of reality, these skins enable World War 1 to come to life within the confines of a World War II simulation, thus providing the player an exciting return to the seminal years of aerial warfare.

The Bloody April Campaign includes and features the following:

*WW1 German pilot ranks. From Unteroffizier to Rittmeister.

*WW1 German medals. Includes the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern and Orden Pour le Merite.

*Over eighty (80) WW1 airplane skins that transform the J8A, CR-42, I-153M, P-11c, U-2VS and TB-3 into the Albatros D.II/III, Sopwith Pup, SPAD VII, SE5, Martinsyde G.100, Nieuport XVII, Morane Saulnier, BE2c/d/e/f/g, RE8, Sopwith One-and-a-half-Strutter, Albatros C.III, Gotha G.IV, and HP 0/100. All skins were meticulously researched to represent these airplanes as they appeared in April, 1917. Skins include planes from Jastas 2/5/11/30 and KGIII; RFC Nos. 1/3/3N/9/13/16/19/27/34/43/52/
56/59/60/66 Squadrons; Aviation Militaire N3 and SPA124 Lafayette Escadrille. Skinned ace airplanes include Manfred von Richthofen, Lothar von Richthofen, Kurt Wolff, Karl Emil Schäfer, Karl Allmenröder, Werner Voss, Hermann Frommherz, Joachim von Bertrab, Adolf von Tutshek, Hans Berr, Heinrich Gontermann, Albert Ball, Billy Bishop, John Andrews, Lloyd Breadner, Edmund Pierce, Raoul Lufbery, René Dorme, Paul Tarascon, Georges Guynemer, and many others.

*A player-controlled campaign featuring 40 unrestricted, open-ended missions. This means the player will be assigned neither waypoints nor altitudes. The two main benefits of this are:

1. Increased realism. You will not be led along a ?scripted waypoint path? as in many campaigns?an adherence to which usually results in meeting hostile airplanes (H.A.) head-on at the same altitude, and a deviance from which results in inactivity since the mission builder constructed all the action around the waypoints. There is nothing ?wrong? with this approach to mission building, of course, but in certain circumstances the playability can become predictable.

In the Bloody April Campaign, however, H.A. can be anywhere, not just collocated with waypoints. Thus, waypoints are unnecessary. Fly north, west, south and even east and you will find H.A.?or, perhaps, they will find you. Therefore, it is up to you as Staffelführer to select the headings and altitudes you feel best assures your greatest chance for success and survival.

2. Increased playability without redundancy. The Bloody April Campaign can be enjoyed multiple times without becoming redundant or boring?simply by selecting different headings in subsequent replays.

For example, flying northwest in Mission 1 will provide an entirely different playing experience than when flown south. Planes you may have shot down when flying northwest live on when you fly south?only to make diving attacks on you fifteen minutes later from locations you did not let them reach the first time you flew the mission. This snowballs into the AI warfare as well?planes that may save you in the first mission might be shot down and unavailable to do so in the second mission. Thus, the Bloody April Campaign can be flown over and over and still offer fresh, new and exciting missions with very different results.

Release is anticipated within 4 weeks, but since I am doing everything, I reserve to take as long as necessary. However, 4 weeks is a reasonable estimation, provided no huge problems are discovered during beta testing.

Check back often, as WiP screenshots will be posted at least bi-weekly. Questions, comments, etc. I will answer here as I see them.

WOW great work mate. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

I myself am REALLY REALLY lookin forward to K.O.T.S. but this looks like its gunna be a ball to play through especaily with skins and the way you've kept the missions open and left it up to the pilot to do with as he please's.

lookin forward to this for sure http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A question though; how will the missions diviate from eachother?
I'm shure you included the ground war into the campaign; I'm just curious how it will impact on the missions..<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

T_O_A_D,

I know HOW to change a mission from single player to coop, I was asking is it practical in this case. In my campaigns there are a number of missions that are solo and can't be converted to coop as their is only one flyable plane. Other missions have mission success criteria that really only applies to one aircraft. This is what I was asking; I just didn't ask the question properly.

JTFM,
Are there sufficient flyable aircraft in each mission to make them coops? Would the missions make sense to be flown as coops?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

HuninMunin: This campaign is very much air-to-air-centric. The ground war is present in the form of artillery along the front, but it is really just eye candy. The overall goal of the campaign is to see if you can win the Pour le Merite by the end of April.

Near the front you?ll see flashes way down below, but mostly you are too busy looking for HA to admire the view. Originally I had all kinds of ground stuff going on, but over the course of developing the missions I realized that I never saw about 99% of the stuff.

Mmitch10: Both the Morane and Gotha are in the paint shop, receiving extensive reworks of their panel lines?mostly, the removal of said lines. I should have some Morane WiP screens later this evening or tomorrow morning.

FlatSpinMan: Each mission of this campaign in no way affects the mission after it?I apologize if I was not clear on that. What I meant is that if the same mission is flown twice using (say) opposite headings each time (say a 335 degree search the first time and 190 the second) you can have two very different experiences. This means the campaign can be flown many times without becoming predictable?at least as quickly, and provided you don?t mind the absence of ground attack missions.

I guess any FB mission can have different outcomes if different headings are flown each time it is played, but it has been my experience that when I leave the waypoints I usually encounter huge amounts of? nothing. Again, nothing wrong with that?I?ve downloaded and flown a million guy?s campaigns, flown the waypoints and enjoyed the experience?I just wanted to give the player more of an active role in this campaign(kind of like a low-rent RB3D). In the Bloody April Campaign, there?s that and then some. Usually, there is action wherever you fly. You can even fly away from the front and still find action?not as much as at the front, of course, but there is usually something to be found.

Zeus-cat: First, thank you for your campaigns--that Straight Shot catapult idea was fantastic!

Yes, most of the missions could be tailored into coops. Usually 6 planes at takeoff, although you could probably add others. Everyone taking off at once would be pretty cool, too! It?s even great in the campaign missions with the AI?they don?t all go at exactly the same time, so it doesn?t look mechanical. Sort of a rag-tag en masse departure, then a nice form-up over the airfield before turning toward the front.

But, back to your question. There are many flyable planes in the missions. Besides Jasta 11, they all air start, however. This includes the other German Jastas in the air. As you may know, it was standard practice that the Germans wouldn?t depart their fields until receiving reports of inbound enemy airplanes, so that is reflected in this campaign by having all the enemy a/c already airborne. In essence, the player is ?joining the war already in progress?.

Okay. Just in case my earlier screens gave the impression that this campaign is an RFC turkey shoot, here are a few more. If those 153 ?Nieuports? get a good burst into you?and usually it?s the how I even know they are there in the first place?within a second or two your elevators are gone, rudder controls damaged and your engine is missing on a few cylinders. Can?t bail out, so now you have to nurse that thing down with Nieuports sitting on your neck the entire way.

FlatSpinMan: Go for it! BTW, do you have a CR-42 "Legion Kondor" campaign?

Tusseladden: You can get some skins for the J8A, CR-42 and TB3 over at Flying Legends, although none that will be in this campaign. Well, I have a version of Ricthofen's D.III, but the campaign has a reworked, more detailed version. Flying Legends has other WW1 skins over there, and FlybyShooter has posted some new ones. His stuff is excellent.

For the Bloody April Campaign, all the necessary campaign skins will be included with the missions, awards, etc.

p-11.cAce and mmitch10: Here are some Morane WiP screens. Gotha will be next, although I'm up in the air about that one. I removed all the corrugated lines but on the TB-3 it just looks too bare. I may just leave them on there--it's a TB-3 and not a Gotha, after all!

Is the I 153 flyable?

If it is it will pwnz the entire campaign...

That touches on the one item that I've always desired as far as building WW1 missions is concerned. If only the mission builder could somehow 'force' the undercarriage of the 153 to stay down! (An unreal fantasy as far as it being possible - but I can dream http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

I've got used to complaints when staging biplane coops using the M62 - so I usually spawn the CR-42 and J8A side airborne, and usually with a height advantage. The Italian job has a good chance if used ably and with good wingman support, but it's important to 'beat it' if the first couple of passes fail!

It's also very important to have everyone properly skinned-up and to fly full-real if you want parity between the various planes. It only really works if you do that. I built a coop that has a flock of brightly coloured CR-42s dropping through a gap in cloud straight onto a group of 6 M62s. I've flown it many times, but the effect is always incredible as red, green, yellow (etc!) shapes come hurtling through the formation and split it up.

Congratulations and thanks, JTFM - I really look forward to this one.

ElAurens: Yes, No.3 Squadron used a mix of Parasols and Biplanes. As the only RFC squadron using them, they won't feature heavily in the campaign, but they'll be there. No. 3 lost 3 Parasols in April 1917. Contrast that with 43 Nieuports lost. (Source: Bloody April... Black September, Franks/Guest/Bailey, 1995, page 111.) Of course, the P-11 is a single-seater, but it'll have to do--plus, it's fun to chase around.

I-153 is not flyable by the player in this campaign. You will see plenty of action against it, however! Several people have opined I should omit them, but I'm leaving them in. If I can shoot them down, hell, anybody can--I am speaking of the AI, of course. Just remember that they tend to dive away when in any sort of trouble and if they engage they tend to do so more in the horizontal than the vertical. However, they will dive out of nowhere (usually from a nearby cloud) and give you a good burst without warning. BTW, only the 153M is used, so you do not face any cannons.

As requested earlier, here are some "Gotha G.IV" WiP screens. The Gothas won't be featured often, but one was shot down in April 1917. Similarly, the RFC lost an HP 0/100, so they will be in the campaign as well. Using the TB-3 for a Gotha is probably the largest stretch from reality, since the TB-3 is a 4-engined monoplane, but it is a BUF, has an open cockpit and fixed gear. I removed all the corrugated panel lines and gave it a "fabric look", except for the fuselage, which was plywood covered.

Hello.

Just a quick update for those interested.

Campaign now features and uses over 100 skins. Most planes in Jasta 11 have multiple skins?clear varnish, freshly painted red, and weathered red--along with their individual colors. This provides a low-rent ?weathering? as the campaign progresses. Still need to finish Lufberry?s SPAD VII and Ball?s Nieuport, although his SE5 is done. I have had some requests to include DH5s?these will have to be CR42s?so I may add them if this does not cause significant delay as I?ll have to redo all the panel lines, fabric wrinkles, etc.

Pilot skins are also under construction. At the very least ?generic? pilot skins will be supplied for RFC and Luftstreikräfte pilots, and I anticipate several aces will be finished as well. At the very least all of Jasta 11 pilots will be recognizable, each in their correct D.IIIs. Only Bishop has been skinned for the RFC so far, but others should be finished before release, including Dorme, Nungesser, Lufberry, etc. Right now I cannot say with finality which pilots will be available upon release.

Missions are being finalized/tested/finalized again. DH5s may be added, and the P11 (?Morane-Saulnier?) may find its way into the campaigns a little more frequently. Two night missions are included?the real Jasta 11 did not fly night missions but in the sim campaign they represent No.100?s night bombing raids and give you a chance for some night action. Visibility is good and a waning gibbous moon provides ample light, and all action occurs above/near the airfield. A searchlight aids spotting, unless it is bombed, of course.

This campaign is taking some time to wrap up?I have to wear many different hats, doing everything myself?but I expect to make this available in a couple weeks. Of course, I?ll provide updates here from time to time.

Just a small update to let those interested know progress continues on the Bloody April campaign, albeit somewhat slowed.

Progress is ?slowed? because I decided to reskin the U-2VS ?Albatros C.IIIs??they were some of the oldest skins and were just a bit too simplistic. I redid the wood fuselages and approximated the translucency of their wings, the latter of which took far longer than I expected. I have to tweak some things here and there, but for the most part the clear varnish fuselage C.IIIs are done and the blue C.IIIs are not far off. The C.IIIs don?t feature prominently in the campaign (they do some bombing and recon and at times are fodder) but because of them you cannot just blaze away at every U-2VS you find?you may find a friendly!

Missions progressing slowly but surely. HP 0/100s (TB-3) have made an appearance, bombing some shipping off the coast. It?s fun to have a go at those beasts, but sometimes the defensive crossfire can be heavy indeed!

Here are some C.III WiP screens and a few screenshots taken during mission tests.

The fighters used all seem to have fuselage mounted guns, and the screenshots show firing at *very* close range. Does setting convergence to, say, 50m make any difference when the guns aren't mounted on the wings?

Hello!

Thanks for the continued interest! For various reasons (with which I won't bore you here) the campaign production had slowed somewhat over the last few weeks. Hence, no updates. However, I'm happy to report that production is now back at full strength! After I test the mission I'm wrapping up I'll post some more screenshots.

And, yes, all parachutes have been disabled (even for AI) so no one gets out alive! Many times during testing I've had my controls shot away with plenty of altitude to bail out but had to ride the plane down to terrain impact. Frustrating? You bet. You'll have to increase your situational awareness and not just charge in with guns blazing--those AI get off some incredible 90 degree deflection shots if you don't pay attention to them.

Still, no chute can be fun. I had a situation where I was more holes than airplane, but because I couldn't bail out I had no choice but nurse it back home--with the chance for HA showing up all-too-likely. Of course, two "Spads" arrived and took turns firing at me but I was able to somehow get the smoking wreck on the ground. It was a horrific crash-landing that tore off the gear, wings and empennage, but the plane did not explode and I surived the mission. I got no kills and was under fire seemingly the entire mission, but what a great time!

Things happen-- developers lose interest, technical problems slow things down, "life" gets in the way, etc.

Probably updating it for '46, don't be so hard on the guy. He's doing it all, for free, so I won't feel gypped if he doesn't ever put it out. I hope that he does, so I'll just send good thoughts his way.

To foxfire1941,

Do you have any idea of the amount of time it takes to make a good campaign? It can literally take hundreds of hours if you really create a quality product.

There is a new WWI server

Along with TripleA007 for his fantastic FLY BOYS SKINS

The Guts and Glory Server presents

The Air Battle of St. Mihiel
(Mission author -=FA=-RaVen)

In the words of JTFM:
" classified as a faux World War 1 Mission because. Obviously Forgotten Battles is a World War II simulation that does not contain World War 1 airplanes.
The means of overcoming this, and the heart of the Mission is the prodigious use of WW1 skins. When applied to several airplanes already contained within Forgotten Battles,
and with the player suspending a certain amount of reality, these skins enable World War 1 to come to life within the confines of a World War II simulation,
thus providing the player an exciting return to the seminal years of aerial warfare.

WHAT THIS MEANS IS:
YOU NEED TO GO GET THE SKINS TO PLAY ON THIS SERVER.
There is a net cache file that if used will totally eliminating any skin load lag on the server. Please see details on web site.
WWI Skins DOWNLOAD HERE (http://www.ravenskins.com/RaVenskinsWW1.html)

As most of the aircraft are the same on both sides the only way tho differentiate is to Id the markings and skins. This adds a terrific amount of immersion the the mission.

Hello, all.

Quite flattered at the interest in this! As speculated, pressing concerns in real life have slowed things waaay down. After a while, honestly, I wondered if I should even bother anymore.

Yet fear not! Life's constraints have eased and testing is again underway! Seems the timing is perfect now to finish this campaign.

Before the end of the weekend I should have some more information. Not giving a "release" date, but I will say there is no way I am going to charge for this. Also, I will not ask for or accept monetary donations.

Stand by...

whats bump mean?

JTFM
01-25-2008, 12:45 PM
Okay, here's the skinny:

Time to work on this campaign has dwindled to nothing. Beside family commitments, I've been contracted to write an MvR book and the time once spent on campaigns is now spent on researching, writing and illustrating (I have to draw 25 profiles). Thus, after the campaign languished a bit I finally "farmed" this out to an individual (never to be named) who promised to finish it. Finally, after weeks and weeks of runaround he has let me know he is unable to finish it and, worst of all, did nothing at all to it.

Jump/cut to recent weeks. I admit I hoped this thread would die and KOTS would come out by now and I'd be rid of this campaign. Yet, for the time being it seems neither is to be, as this thread keeps getting bumped. There's interest there somewhere. So, although I haven't the time to complete the campaign as I originally intended, I'll take the time and offer a 20 mission campaign.

But, I need a little help. Namely, beta-testing. Please PM if interested. I'm not going to pick a million guys, just the first few that PM. Perhaps a couple missions with full skins--likely take several emails to send it all, so please include email address.

As an aside, I fired up a mission last night, just to see if I had any interest left in the campaign. Picked mission 6 at random and had no idea what to expect; it's been that long since I made or flew it. The weather was good, which is a surprise (mostly it's poor), and I was perplexed by the smoking hangars until I remembered the mission prior to this one (which is a semi-fictitious night mission where Jasta 11 repels an airfield attack [in reality the pilots shot back from the ground, nobody got airborne]) damaged some hangars that are depicted still smoldering the next morning. Took off (although three other pilots crashed, an occasional occurence that happens for reasons I cannot discern), followed various AA to find the enemy, inadvertently attacked an Albatros C.III (which survived), and then flew around seeing nothing. I was starting to think it was real boring when out of nowhere tracers came ripping past the cockpit. I jerked the J8A into a split S but while inverted had to push the nose over a bit to reduce the angle of attack and keep from stalling, but this cut the engine! Damn thing didn't want to restart and the sky was suddenly full of I-153 "Nieuports." I took some hits during my dead-stick maneuvering and just as I was going to set it down on a road I got the engine going again.

Right then I took several hits to the engine which reduced my power output but I managed to reverse back on my attacker (while hanging on the prop just above the trees) and get some bursts into him. He turned and ran but as I closed I was jumped by some Morane Parasols (P-11s). This resulting melee made Voss's last flight look like a picnic, and after being well shredded I finally augered into some trees for a flaming dirt nap.

So, although I augered, and even though at the beginning the mission seemed lacking, and my rustiness in the J8A was apparent, the sudden jump and dogfight out of nowhere was very exciting and the mission was a lot of fun. This is a great example of one of this campaign's features: What you find in the air and when/where you find it all depends on the direction flown--had I flown south instead of west, I would have encountered an entirely different experience with different airplanes, unlike the stock campaigns where you fly off and the beaten path and find nothing.

So, that's that. I'll give this campaign a week to finish (aside from testing and subtle tweaks), and then that's it. I'll put it out as is, whether its twenty missions long or one mission long. And, if any of the established, veteran campaign builders want to offer their two (or three, or twenty-five) cents, I'm all ears.

Thanks.

JFM

PS Here are three profiles for you WW1 fans, as a thanks for your patience. They're low-res here for size considerations, and none will appear in my book, but they are similar to those that will:

To PM click "Go", "Personal Zone", "Private Messaging"

Be sure to remember the name of the person your PMing.

I wish I had the time and skillz to play and test.

Another consideration for JTFM might be to offer his ideas and elements of what he wanted to do to one of our better campaign builders, hopefully one who has been interested in this since the beginning. A post in the Mission Builders forum might find interest.

However, I completely understand if JTFM doesn't want to go this route based on his past experience and the fact he'd be giving his "baby" to another. However, I think that there are respectful, competent MB's out there that can do some justice to it.

Hey loon, glad you like it.
No-one's taking over, I'm just helping out with ground objects. JTFM's still doing the misions, breifings etc.
I probably will use 4.09 objects except the men are too big for the trenches - they stick right out of them. Might be good for an infantry assault scene though.
