Hello everyone... I have finally finished my epic campaign depicting the exploits of US Navy Fighter Squadron VF-9.

http://jyarbrough.homestead.com/VF9_Splash.jpg

** Download here ** (http://jyarbrough.homestead.com/Index.html)

The "Cat O'9s Squadron" was deployed to North Africa on the USS Ranger to fly their F4F-4 Wildcats over the Operation Torch invasion beaches. After their return, they were the first squadron to be equipped with the F6F-3 Hellcat, and were sent to the Pacific aboard the newly comissioned USS Essex. There they were involved in a full year of carrier combat and finished their 1st tour just before the Marianas Campaign began.

I had the good fortune of conversing with Hamilton "One Slug" McWhorter by e-mail while researching this campaign and he assisted in making some of the details more authentic. He is a 12 kill WWII Ace who was in VF-9 throughout this tour of duty and is "The First Hellcat Ace".

I would appreciate any feedback you might have, but that's enough rambling for now ... enjoy the campaign!

Thank you very much for your hard work.

The add-on campaigns are so much better than the stock ones.

Thanks again.

I've had the pleasure to test some of the missions. Bird Brain is very talented at picking out the details of the various US Navy operations and the events they are based on. A really good campaign to try out!

Registry entries do not affect the install. When you get to the window with the file path to unzip it to, you need to select you "IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles" folder that the game files are stored under. If you placed the game files in another folder, install to that one. Wherever your il2fb.exe file is located.

If you want to manually install it, install it to your c:/ drive and copy the files under "c:/missions" & "c:/paintschemes" to the corresponding folders under your game installation.

The self extracting.exe file is specifically designed to accomodate non-standard installations and different language versions. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If the time it takes to make it is any indication, it should be about twice as good. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I assume you typed "IL2 STRUMOVIK FORGOTTEN BATTLES" and you did not copy that from the error message? Typos can make a huge difference when you install campaign files. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

There are a couple of things that could be wrong that would cause this if your files are labeled correctly.

1) If your IL2 files are write protected, the installation will not overwrite them and will not allow them to install. If you installed from a copied CD, this could happen. You would need to go into the file properties and deselect write protection.

2) You may have a corrupt download that has an incomplete file in it. I have tested the download .zip file and I know that is not the problem.

There are a few things you can try.

1) Unselect "overwrite files" in the installation window and see which file is causing the problem. Skip that one. Not having a new USN icon won't effect much.

2) Try DL'ing again although I know 23 MBs takes a while. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

3) To manually install, create a temporary folder wherever you like and install the files to that folder. Then move the files to your IL2 FB directory manually. I don't know how to be clearer than that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If that doesn't get it, send me a PM. I have never promised technical support on my campaigns as they are freeware, but I will do what I can to help you get it running. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Thanks BB - I have always enjoyed your campaigns and have been looking forward to this for sometime.
I have just got to mission 3 and unfortunately its the big slide show.
I have a middle of the range set up (2.4Ghz, GE forced 5900 Ultra card and 1.3 G RAM) but it obviously is not enough.
Any suggestions on what is best to remove from the (heavy) missions without spoiling them too much?

I am sorry to hear it doesn't run well on your computer. I got another comment that it is not mid-range rig friendly in that mission as well. I am going to try a few things, but I would guess that it is a combination of the shelling from the ships and all the landing craft firing at the beach.

I really didn't go over the top with #s of aircraft, so I think it is the CPU figuring out all the ships paths & gunfire.

I will try deleting some stuff and let you try the mission and see if it helps. I could do a "light version" patch for people that get the slide show. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I also suggest reducing graphics to the lowest level x32 bit....i fly at that on my p4 and it works great, still very detailed.

I highly recomend this...i tested it also, and i can tell you that BB is without peer in his efforts, both in quality and quantity. the historical feel is great, and you may see some surprises (i didnt know submerged subs can shoot torps-duh). I believe this is his last IL2 effort, but BOB will give him a bunch of new material to work with. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Thanks for whatever you end up doing BB. I might add only hours before installing your latest I had just completed restoring everything after a major software crash. I still (after hours of tweaking and re-tweaking everything) have not got it back to as smooth as it was before. I'm waiting for some advice from the tech forum w.r.t. what video card drivers I should be using.
I did try mission 4 and although not as bad as 3 it was not playable either.
Worst case scenerio, it will still be there when I upgrade for BOB.

"The gunfire induced yaw issue with the F4F Wildcat and the F6F Hellcat should be fixed with the 4.06m patch and hopefully that is already available by the time you read this."

timholt...

Would you be willing to try out a "light" version of mission #3? Since you have already progressed to mission #4, you could move your mission files to the single mission folder and play it from there. I have an updated .mis file here;

VF9Light_1.zip (http://jyarbrough.homestead.com/VF9_Light1.zip)

You can unzip this to your FB folder and overwrite the original one. If you need any assistance creating single mission folders, or running it from the FMB, let me know.

If this one works out for you (as I think it will) I will do an update file for those who need it to run the campaign. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

BB, thanks for the work and I look forward to it. BTW, here is a stupid question... on these campaigns that are older and made for older versions of the sim, can they be played just as well on the current versions of the sim?

bird_brain

Yes, the older campaigns work on the current version. The only issue you may find is that the AI has been changed so many times that certain things may not happen as they were originally intended. I never used the "Stationary aircraft" feature much and it has been changed in later versions, but in some people's campaigns you may find some aircraft doing strange things on the taxiways. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

BB - No joy. I dropped your new mission file into single missions and added the properties file from the campaign - flashed it up - not much difference. I then went in and dropped the ROF for all ships and landing craft. A little better but still not playable. I then deleted all ships and allied landing craft and tried again. Better but not what I would call enjoyable.
To remove anymore would only destroy what you were tring to achieve so I will put the campaign on hold until the specs are released for BOB and I purchase the new computer.
Thanks for trying.
