There's an old castle in my neck of the woods that is surrounded by a local Golf club. The owner of the caslte is a bit eccentric and he has a habit of buying machinery and placing it on his property. Among other things, he's got various Mercedes-Benz fire- and construction trucks, an old late 1950s Setra bus an East German Mig-21 and his most recent "investment", an Antonov An-2, possibly of Polish origins. What lead me to believe this was the "Made in Poland" badge on the engine and the fact that some interior parts were written in Polish. Wikipedia also says that the An-2 was license built in Poland at some point.

I took a trip to this place once again and found his newest toy, an Antonov An-2. The side door was unlocked which permitted me entrance to this legendary aircraft. Enjoy the pictures!

EXTERNAL VIEWS

The plane itself is in poor condition as you can see.

INTERNAL PICTURES

We begin with the cargo bay or whatever you want to call it. The metal floor was creaking and felt like it would crack under my weight at any moment. I must have been mad to venture as far as the cockpit!

This was in the rear of the plane. I didn't venture near it because the floor boards behind looked really weak and breakable. I took the picture at a zoom angle. Is this some sort of radio?

THE COCKPIT

The cockpit of the An-2 was overall still in good shape. I'm 6'4" and the seating position was very uncomfortable and tight. I also have long legs so I was especially cramped while sitting down. You also couldn't see over the nose and overall visibility outwards was terrible. Things probably get better once you're in the air but that big air intake upfront seemed a bit annoying. Enjoy the detailed pictures of the instruments. Notice the Russian and Polish language labels.

An-2 was quite a shock for West, when it appeared after the WW2, was a biplane and had a cargo capacity just a bit short of that of C-47.

Ty for sharing, yeah, they are gorgeous.

I take that this is not in condition tu start up the engine. Those things are loud, we have one in local airport in Helsinki. You know what is coming over your head becouse you hear it from far far away. The funny thing is that there is only one of these in finland, atleast officialy, but I happen to know that there is another somewhere and it has the same id. that that flying one has.

Came back from a fantastic holiday in Cuba back in January where an An-2 flew over a few times. Always a bit far away to get a decent pic, but I did use my camcorder if only to get the great sound of that Shvetsov radial -you can close your eyes and imagine Lavochkins!!!

I have to say it's in great shape compared to some of the shard piles we've seen excavated and cobbled back to life. But, as any preservationist knows, outdoors = death if it sits long enough.

AN2s don't seem to [yet] be rare enough to merit the refabrication of a frame in that state of decay. I'll bet it hauled some interesting things during Soviet times. I love the cockpit glass. It reminds me of a Storch.

Hi,

Glad you guys liked the shots. Thanks for the video comments. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

According to the gardener who was tending the nearby castle grounds, the engine still works. I think the elevators, fin and wings need some major repairs as does the cockpit and of course the metal floor boards.

I have some Mig-21 pictures coming up ASAP. Posted them here before but it can't hurt to post new ones. The cockpit is like a little swimming pool: so much water in it! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

That plane for the Soviets played the same role as the de Havilland Beaver and Otter etc. in Canada. Linking isolated communities in Siberia or the Arctic (well neighbours with the North Pole in between).

Seems like this gent bought his toys to have the and doesn't seem to give a darn about their upkeep. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

For what its worth, as an engineer that is not in that bad a condition, its more or less complete, and does appear to have had some care lavished on it as the tyres are still inflated. true the fabric is gone but that is just cosmetics, a bit like a rag top on a car...... the structure appears pretty sound. As for turning the engine over well you may well cause more damage than good, especially with it hydraulicing etc,,

one of the best in the UK is the Air Unique version, lives near me, this is the interior

Nice finding!

See the hole I pointed out in your pics?
It's for hand starting the engine like an old T ford!!
Maybe you'll find the crank somewhere in the plane.

This is usually the case. The only thing he really fixes up are his Mercedes trucks and some of his older cars.

The airplanes are left to rot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
