Hmm, I would like an intimate (meaning not bf1942 style) game where you could fight for the Germans or the Japanese. Something that could capture the desperation Sajer felt or the soldiers effectively trapped on so many pacific islands. Who am I kidding though? Not gonna happen we always have to play as "goodvsevil" although I would debate such a statement. At least in COB you could be a Russian, maybe it is a start.

Yikes, they call that "unprecedented realism"? Apparently none of the developers have ever aimed an M1. I like the blurring effect, but it is WAY too close, and WAY too big. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif And just like CoD, the back face opening of the rear sight is about five times too large. And I see they still have Hollywood muzzle flashes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif
Will we ever get a WWII infantry SIM?
Anyway, graphics wise, fabulous indeed. I drool just thinking of flying in a world that looks like that. We shall see.

Most in-depth article yet (http://www.ugo.com/channels/games/features/brothersinarms/default.asp):

quote:
Designed by Gearbox Software, Brothers in Arms was born out of president Randy Pitchford's passion to bring a more grounded Band of Brothers feel to a World War II game, encouraging a sense of identity of the squad members, and generally elevating the genre. Authenticity was key, and the team spent years researching and delving into the National Archives to get their facts straight, unearthing hundreds of hours of after-action reports, which were thought lost for over 30 years. Gearbox even tracked down Colonel John Antal, an Airborne Ranger in the U.S. Army and an author who had written military strategic manuals, to consult on the project. "He was writing these tactics exercises that were like choose your own adventures," explains Pitchford. "This guy was a game designer!" Antal would bring all the know-how to help make Brothers in Arms a smarter, cooler and most importantly, more tactical game.

Maybe not a simulation, but it seems a step in the right direction. The mindless running around and shooting is what has turned me off to FPS in the first place. Call of Duty seems to require more than that, and obviously this one will too.

Michapma, buy COD. It's like living your own WW2 film, and it's better thought than MOH. You are not alone, you are one more, and you feel that all the time.

And it's not so easy that you don't find it challenging, nor so difficult to dispair you. Although it's pretty linear, it's a rewarding experience. Not too long, but intense.

Bearcat, I've read enough of your post to belive that you are a serious student of WWII history. Give yourself a treat and get the full version of COD.

Play it through 1 time on greenhorn for a tune up, then play it on some of the harder settings. IMO all that the games lacks is a German mission.

Not only is it the only FPS I have played where your AI team mates are something other than meat sheilds but you get to re-enact some fairly accurate missions as they actually played out, not some designors idea of WWII.

The Russian campaign will make you damn glad to have not been anywhere in the neighborhood guest starring as a conscript.

Looks good and I'll check it out but it couldn't be much better than Hidden & Dangerous 2. To me that game is the IL-2 of FPS. It's more of a sim than a shooter game, the only shame is that online hasn't caught on. Still, its the best single player experience I have ever had in a FPS.

The problem with detial in flight sims is the MASSIVE view distances concerned.

A game like call of duty only has to see a few hundred yards as you are on the ground and your view is blocked by close objects like houses and trees.

When u are in a plane high above th ground you can see for miles and miles. Too get an engine to cope with the massive distances involved is so much harder and therfore the objects like trees and vehicles have to loose a lot of detail because you can see so many of them, which means that performance suffers.

Think about it, the max amount of trees you may see in a call of duty screenshot would be 50-60 at the most. A flight sim you could be seeing 5000, which makes your gfx card work very hard.

Therefore fps games will always be far ahead of flight sims with regard to graphics detail because the engine has to handle a LOT more objects than a fps game.

CoD is simply amazing, even though it is short, It filled me with more emotion than I thought a game could. Games are going from just simple entertainment to almost an art. I can't wait for the Expansion, They are going to do the battle of the Kursk Bulge! What a sight will that be! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I can't wait for Brothers in Arms, I am as giddy as a little school girl! There is a new game called Farcry, it has a view of 1 kilometer. Hunde,

Agree with you about H&D2 - having found MoH unplayable in its arcade-like simplicity and CoD beautiful but too linear, H&D2 is truly great. I thought the only FPS game I'd ever enjoy was Operation Flashpoint, but H&D2, apart from some odd AI behaviour (no surprises there) and a little too much room clearance (at least up until Mission 2 where I am), is the mutt's nuts, and requires thought, patience and skill. Great gameplay, wonderful graphics (just wait until the first scene of the Norway mission!) and very immersive.

Also agree with Lazio - where's the next tank sim to follow Panzer Elite? Lots of infantry stuff but serious tank sim (BF1942 doesn't count IMHO)! Shame really, 'cos Panzer Elite was great, if now limited and old.

But, ultimately, you're all right - a couple of weeks after getting really stuck into H&D2, AEP came out and hasn't left my CD drive! Plus I've got broadband now and am in a Ventrilo-enabled squad...wife thinks I'm mad, but game play has never before been so much fun, even if v. hard on the full real servers (why didn't the German fighters have rear-view mirrors fitted as standard?).

R
