i need help attacking warships. many questions include : what angle is best, how far can they detect you by sonar, how easily spotted is your periscope, what depth to set torpedos, what type of uboat is needed to successfully attack these, are there different strategies for cruisers and desttroyers ??? the list goes on. any help would be appreciated. I live for this game!!!!

1 You should get such possition that your torpedos should make contact on it at an angle between 85-95 degrees, if you plan to use contact fuse. If using magnetic fuse, angle is irrellevant.
2 It depends on the noise you're doing and the quality of their sonar operator.
3 It depends on the height over the sea, state of the sea, time that you have it over the sea and quality of their crew.
4 It depends on your target: for under keel shots, get the draft plus one meter on good-fair time, and 2 meters on rought seas. For other targets, check ship weak spots in the Community Manual (http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Ship_Weak_Spots)
5 It depens on your strategy, luck, quality of crew and quality of enemy: if you master the tech to sink a ship with a single torpedo, a Type II will be harmfull for a major battleship. If you cannot aim correctly, an armed trawler will kill your Type XXI.
6 Destroyers tend to chase you, so you can use that to lure them to you. Cruisers tend to run away from you, so you don't want to be spoted by them. Anyway, you may want to come close, shoot a fish or a fan of fishes, and avoid detection. With fair time, steam torpedoes are no no unless you're close (less than 600 meters), while electric goes fine at a range of no more than 1200 meters.
You can get some strategies from http://www.subsim.com
In short, they must know that you're there because your torpedoes are doing a carnage!

Good chase, kaleun!

dont forget with the scope its not only height above water but your speed as well. even scopes with fairings leave wakes at higher speeds.

i dont even mess with warships unless they are anchored. until i get acoustic weapons, then they drop like flies.

Unless you really have to... Don't.
Unless they just happen to be there, real close, when you pop your scope up. Don't waste time on anything smaller than a cruiser.

Surface at 4000m or greater, go to full astern to slow the closing speed and sink lone destroyers with your deck gun. If he gets too close, submerge and stick a torpedo set to 2.5/3m depth, down his throat @ 500/600m.

If in convoys, surface at 6000+m and draw them off one at a time and do like above. If they all turn to engage you at once, don't listen to me, you're on your own. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

For bigger warships, go with Jose-MaC above but to quote BdU, always be aggressive. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hang about, others will be along shortly to tell you the "realistic" way of dealing with them. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Methinks that now you've all the info need to do a try! How could I forget to tell you about the speed? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif Maxpower2 is absolutely right, as is Vanjast and Doug Dread. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Your final strategy depends on the material of your cojones: ranging from organic ones to steel kind. But never underestimate your enemy -if you like to survive combats, that's it! A single destroyer heading towards you in zig-zag may be hard to hit with the deck gun, not to say with a torpedo. But a lucky shoot can bring her to the bottom, so you can enjoy british company close to you.

Ah, if you do use a Type II, remember: just 3 fore torpedoes and a couple of reloads, so down throath shoots became more risky and interesting. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Cant belive no one metioned it (from what i read) but only use electic torpeedos, destroyers will spot the wake of steams, dodge them and get a lock on your position.

In down throath shoot, I prefeer steam, sinc ethey're a lot faster and you can give her more time to come close to you.

If you're shooting an unsuspected DD from about 400 meters, you can use electric or steam at max speed -about 15 seconds is no time for reacting. At least with me...

In any other situation, do as Ju88 says!
