Hey all, thought I might post some pics of some P51s that came thru here today. They were really sweet looking.

Oh, awesome! I want to hear it too! I live close to an airport that is home to two of them. I can hear them 5 miles out and will stop in my tracks to find them!

They stayed overnight here in Amarillo, Texas, on their way to Arizona.

Gunfighter is a Merlin powered 'Stang.I asked the pilot when it was @ Wings Over Houston a couple years ago. He seemed kinda surprised at the question.

Bald Eagle is a gorgeous scheme that really doesn't work (for me, anyway) on the D.

Cool to see a couple of P-51s

Get a little tired of the D-Day stripes on the planes. Its a little over used.

No they were not that shiney in ww2 and I think it looks stupid to buff them like that. "Gunfighter" looks much more authentic to me!

Was that Gunfighter one painted in the "aluminium" parts - ie. is that natural metal finish or paint?

The highly buffed finish on Bald Eagle probably has as much to do with practicality as show: ie. bare metal presents fairly serious problems with regard to protection from corrosion etc. (one of the big reasons we paint things) - for bare aluminium protectant/polish to work best it neeeds to go onto as smooth a surface as possible. And I think many would be surprised just how shiney wartime bare metal P51's actually were!

Best I remember, the bare aluminum on Gunfighter was a natural finish, not painted.

I might have to stand corrected then - I really didn't think Gunfighter was shiney enough to be bare metal (hard to tell in the pics) and that on the other hand Bald Eagle whilst evidently polished somewhat beyond natural finish, was not as much shinier than a std finish than generally would be thought.

did you ask them if the center of gravity (in the Oleg model) spins the plane out...??

Just to name a book, Squadron/Signal Publications walkaround book about the P-51D does not show a single one that is anything more then a dull aluminium color. Even the shots of planes fresh from the factory all show the same dull finish. This over buffed look is purely fictional.

The p51 at the local airport was out flying yesterday. My boys (7 and 9) run in to tell me the mustang is out and to come see it! They know at p51 when they see one. I'm so proud! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
