Been flying quite a few lately but cannot decide which one to "buy"? (does not matter what year)
I sure like that G-6A/S and drool with its sports car feel. Got anything else??
Any "virtual tips/opinions"

I wouldn't pay $2 for one of those horrible, horrible fake 109s.

I mean, the nose looks like a guppy or something. And to think this is trying to impersonate the most beautiful plane ever.

Mmmmm Black 6 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif when she worked http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. The tosser pilot decided he knew better than to use the Auto radiator. He was doing his display, cocked the engine and had to force land it in the field on the other side of the motorway to Duxford, where it nosed over, and broke its back, now she silently and sadly sits in RAF Hendon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Was this a common fate of these planes? Or did the pilot just screwup? Did he hit the brakes too hard perhaps?

they could do it for you, as for Engines they have found a cache of boxed inhibited engines stored in Russia recently and there was quite a few, but allowing for slave labour building them they are gonna need to pretty intensive inspecting

IIRC the pilot stayed under Black 6, upside-down in the pit for quite a time because he insisted that no more damage was done to the aircraft to get him out. So he waited for the rescuers to get a hoist/crane out to the site before he could escape. So yeah, he screwed up, (don't we all) but I think he redeemed himself somewhat.

It only funny 'til someone loses an eye.........

Hmmm maybe not a 109 yet, but...

There's a Russian company (in fact the factory that used to build Yak-3's in the war) is building replicas of Zeros. http://lenta.ru/russia/2003/12/23/zero/ (in russian)
They built a couple for Pearl Harbor the movie. I've no idea what engines they put in them, but its a zero on the outside at least. Probably the cockpit too (if you pull out the nav, GPS and radio equipment). At least Zero's finally carry radios!

So, if you get enough demand, they could probably start building 109s too. Just have to steal the 601 blueprints from Daimler-Chrysler-Mercedes-Benz :S .. and a couple MG151s. And a Mk108.

Hehe - no - but he was stuck in the pit for an hour or so (upside down) because they weren't allowed to pull him out for "insurrance reasons". He wasn't hurt I believe. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Have to admit hearing a flight sim oik calling a respected warbird pilot a n00b is about the funniest thing I've seen on this board. Unless you were joking http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .

Warbird flying is a dangerous occupation, last year was particularly bad for losses including a Heinkel and a Fairy Firefly - some say it would be best if these aircraft, as they age, were kept safely in hangers for people to look at. Most, like myself, would prefer that they keep flying.

As to the topic, if I could buy one, it would be an Emil, as I'm a Battle of Britain romantic.

Dubbo2 thats correct http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. To be honest i feel that Black 6 could fly again, i cant see why the restorers or who ever don't as the Flugwerk people for help.

Korolov: the age of the plane is irrelivant, i gave the reason for the out come of Black 6's end. It is completely pilot error, had he not tarted around with the radiator Black 6 would have been absolutely fine

Last year the only all original flying
Bf-109, an "E" model" was for sale. It
was advertised in Air Classics with
no price, but I'll bet you might need to
empty your piggy bank.

The Hispano's are truly Bf-109s, airframe
components were of German manufacture
and assembled in Spain, but they were re engined
with Merlins for obvious reasons.

I remember someone reverse re-engined an HA
back to DB power a few years ago.

The Bf-109E is a war weary, was reputed to have
been flown by Hans-Joachim Marseille and
scored several kills.

Typical of Bf-109s it was shot up and re-manufactured
several times. I believe it was in Bf-109G
form when it was restored to Bf-109E form
as it was originally manufactured.

The age of the plane has a lot more to do with it than you might think.

Most of all I don't understand why you guys are so quick to blame the pilot for the loss of the aircraft; these things really do happen with planes, new and old. Quite frankly, I don't see any of you guys being able to do any better. Flying a warbird is quite a bit different from pounding keys on the keyboard and using your X-45.

With regard to Black 6 - anyone actually bothered to read the Air Accidents Investigation Branch report? Not exactly conclusive that it was pilot error and he did every thing possible to preserve the plane including refusing for it to be cut open to release him

It certainly shows that the radiator handel was involved in it all. We may never know how it was move, but its safe to suggest it was either the pilot playing around, or knocked in the recue work. Either way the cooling systems i.e the rads played a big role

I hope the MRG have a stroke of luck in time and can get her going one day

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

I saw Black 6 flying at Duxford in '93, so I'm not too upset with it having been pranged, as long as no one got hurt and it was repaired.

I believe Black 6 has been fully restored and is now on permanent static display. The only reason it won't fly again is because its owners, the Ministry of Defence, won't allow it. The airframe is regarded as too historically significant to risk- being 80% original. Personally, I'm glad.
However, as more restorable airframes emerge from Russia and more DB engines are refurbished we will see an increase in the number of flyable 109s. I have it on good authority that the Finnish Defence Ministry holds stocks of DB605s still boxed in swastika stamped crates- along with lots of other original 'zero- time' 109 components (my informant has seen them). Unfortunately, they are treated like the crown jewels and rarely made available to restorers- to the point where their existence is sometimes officially denied. Nevertheless, these things do exist, in Finland and elsewhere, and over the next decade we are bound to see quite a few 109s take to the air.

That sounds promisinghttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Its shame that nothing can be done about 6 though in terms of airworthyness, it doesnt seem fair they keep these old birds grounded, can be said about all of them really. But im glad statics exist though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
