For ground pounding I mean. I read a thread about someone who dogfights in it.

anyone?

I have a blast with it now and then,

I do when I feel like blowing something up http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. There's nothing else like it for ground attack.

Every day. Always ground pounding. I'll only go air-to-air as defense on the RTB.
I also fly the P-47 alot. Can't wait for the P-38. Best of both worlds. Ground pounding and air-to-air.

I got the demo becuase I thought the IL-2 was an interesting looking plane. Then I flew it. It sure was hard but not half as hard as the original P-39. Now that was one twitchy bird, at least until I figured out the "Controls" screen.

The name of the game is IL-2 Strumovik/Forgotten Battles.

I love the game, I love the plane.

I fly the IL-2 a lot, esp. offline. There's no other aircraft I feel as comfortable in at really really low level, like treetop alt.

Nothing better for blowing up ground targets. Will eat Tigers for breakfast and anything else.

Biggest problem though, very vulnerable to AAA, so I like to take a Tbolt with bombs and nail AAA before I go in with IL-2.

I fly the IL2 about 1/3 to 1/2 the time on average. Part of the charm of the game is the ground action and your missing out if you don't "interract" with the ground units once in a while. Wish I didn't have to zoom in so much just to be able to see them (they disappear otherwise), but I guess that's a frame rate compromise.

Last time I flew online (full real) it was kinda neat just to be able to find the target, blow up some ground units , get punded by an enemy aircraft, get rescued by my "little friends", and then have to use my "manual" gear extension ( I guess hydraulics were shot out) to be able to land successfully.

Every once in a while I go on a tear, but I'd rather make a fast strike with a P-47 and fight my way out. But being able to TnB my way out has appeal, too, especially if its short range missions.

Btw, the IL-2I that the other thread is referring to was a bomber killer variant. "I" for Intercepter. Of course, they needed escorts in RL to take care of the fighters covering the enemy bombers.

Good hunting,

Fly it a lot on weekends when my squad is on line. Forget the waypoints and NOE all the way to the target.

That would be my thread. For clarification, I was talking about dogfighting in the IL-2I, the *interceptor* model. It was built for air-to-air combat. It can't mount any rockets or bombs.

In answer to your question, yes, I do occassionally use the IL-2 for ground and pound (just not the "I" model). I've been a long-time fan of strafing and rockets, and tonight I taught myself how to aim with bombs. I'm still having a bit of difficulty hitting tank columns with them (bridges are okay, but they're bigger and they don't move). Any tricks you've got up your sleeve?

I fly them when I get bored or annoyed on dogfight servers. I start dropping bombs on parked aircraft or ground targets. The only plane that can be more deadly sometimes is the P-47 and the FW190F-8. The IL2 can definately take the punishment and hold enough weaponry to make a serious dent in the enemy.

Switching to gunner station, I've downed La7's before....lit them on fire even.

I love the IL-2. Great ground-pounder. I used to like the IL-2 3M, but now think it is a real dog.

BTW, I am working on an IL-2T campaign. 23 action packed missions!!! Coming soon to a joystick near you!

I'll be looking for that IL-2T campaign Zeus-cat ! I love naval strike missions ! I must have played the two IL-2 vs convoy missions in the 2nd demo ohhh... 20-30 times before I bought the game.

I watched yesterday a program about A-1o on History Channel (actually it was an ad clip about A-10). As I got to know the best ground attack of WWII was Stuka Ju-87 and that Germans were overnumbered by Russians http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am developing a campaign for the IL-2T.

If anyone has an original idea for IL-2T torpedo missions, let me know. I am trying to do as many different missions as possible with minimal repeats. I don't want a bunch of missions where you take off, torpedo a freighter and fly back to base. Right now I have 23 missions with very little in the way of repeats.

The basic concept is that you start off as a Kapitan of a squadron of rookie pilots. Not only do you fly missions, but you must control the various zvenos (flights) under your command to achieve mission success. The pilots in your squadron will get better as the campaign progresses. The missions will get tougher too. I felt this was the only way to use the IL-2T in a campaign. Most ships require multiple hits so almost every mission is a group effort.

I will start a thread of my own and post this message.

All ideas will be considered.

I love it for ground attack offline and online. Its just that online theres that epidemic where all the enemy fighters are drawn to the bombers like magnets...no matter how many of your teams fighters are in the air. That just makes it annoying.

Il-2 never existed in a torpedo-bobmber version if believe to "Air Ground Attack Aviation of the Red Army, Volume I".

Has ANYONE actually dogfighted in it? I want to hear other people's takes on it. When I fly in the QMB, I fly the il2 a lot. What I do is I ground pound until myy weapons are out, then I sneak up on a unexpecting pilot( i.e. bf109, b239, sometimes fw190, etc.) and use those awesome cannons and machine guns, and those babies pack a punch! If it's meant for the ground, a wooden fighter is nothing!

yes i dogfight the il2 to, when u r intercepted the best defense is the atack, agresiveness is the key, and it is easy to shoot overtrusty lufwafe pilots

Flying the IL-2 in DF servers can be a lot of fun- personally, recommend getting up to altitude- say 2000 m or so- and look for the enemy below you. Manuever behind them, dive down- watch the speed- don't go over about 520 IMO, get on their 6 and start hammering. IMO, no matter what plane it is in the game- if you hit him at least 1 time with the 23mm, he's not going to out run you. From that point you probably are better off using a turn fight- but thats my opinion. After you shoot him down- get out of the area at low level, till you are clear, and can climb and do it again!

IMO, probably has the the most Ammo of any plane in the game

Yes, I do. I use the IL-2I for dogfighting, even though it lacks machine guns. I think it keeps its momentum up better than any other IL-2 model.

With other models, I think the best strategy is to try to set up head-to-head passes and just maul the enemy with your superior firepower and armor. If you try and T&B at all in a ground-pounder model, you're likely to lose so much speed that any fighter will just walk away from you, unless you're able to tag them FAST.

I built a mission as part of a campaign in which you have to abort a ground attack mission to carve up a couple of flights of He111s .... and escorts.... and hang on until base can get you some fighter support.

I do. What are the chances of a DAG-10 grenade launcher ever being added to the loadout for this aircraft? The launcher was in the rear fuselage and was there to stop enemy fighters sneaking up under the tail. It held 10 grenades and could be operated by the pilot or gunner. Each grenade was attached to an automatically opening parachute, with a three second fuse, set to explode 100 metres behind the IL2. Not sure how common the installation was, but I sure would like to try it out in an IL2.

I do fly IL2 any version online&offline.I say I fly 50% IL and 50% P-47 , but lately P-47 got a higher percentage. I do "dogfight" in IL2 , especially on early versions. The plane is virtually impossible to stall. Victims are TnB type. I can slow down to incredible speeds and once I remembered a Bf ended in front of my guns. Squezee the triger and end of luck for the guy.

It's surprising how many fighter pilots don't know what to do against one and I love the way they squeal as you take them out on the runway.

Flying the Sturmovik is good fun. I fly exlusively of-line (crappy connection), but still have fun bouth bombing and dog-fighting. The good thing about the the plane is that in a burn-and-turn fight _you_ have a rear-mounted MG http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
