Out of curiosity, does anyone have any records of pilot opinions/tests on the Spit VIII in regards to it's handling and performance when compared to the mark V of IX?

A quick review of "Spitfire" by John Vader (part of the Ballantine's Illustrated History of WWII series), the MkVIII and MkIX were nearly identical in some respects. They both had the same weight of armor, empty weight was the same, but the VIII was heavier when loaded, both could climb to 20,000 ft in about 6 1/2 minutes, and they both had the same top speed. The VIII had greater range, however, due to the extra internal tanks in the wings. Also, the VIII was better suited to dusty and tropical environments.

The VIII was build from a prototype, while the IX was converted from the Mk V.

So, performance-wise they were pretty similar. Not sure about handling, but I would guess they were close as well.

Mk. VIII vs. Mk. IX with Merlin 63 (http://www.spitfireperformance.com/spit8tac.html)

Although in-game, we have Merlin 66 Mk. VIIIs and IXs, with the Merlin 70 in the IXe H.F.

The SPitfire VIII is the more modern aircraft, the MkIX was a stopgap.

The MkVIII has a longer range, as good top speed, but with a much more strengthend and improved airframe, better control surfaces etc.

The MkVIII was supposed to be the next generation of the SPitfire after the MkIX, but the FW190 gave the RAF such a scare they fitted the new Merlin engine to the MkV airframe instead, resulting in the MkIX.

The MkIX was very close to the MkVIII in performance, and far better than the MkV, so rather than upset production, they kept producing mkIX's and gradually added the MkVIII improvemments over time so as not to disrupt production.

The MkVIII is the 'better' aircraft in Real Life if you read up on its specs and changes. In IL2 they are almost identical. The real SPitfire VIII carried more fuel, had a stronger airframe and was slightly heavier, yet felt identical to the MkIX according to the trials, the resulting weight gain being offset by the better aerodynamics and control surfaces.

Most mark VIII's were sent overseas to Italy, Malta, Med and Pacific where its longer range could be put to good use.

I always think that the differences between the Mk IX and Mk VIII in game are a tremendous tribute to OM and 1C's modelling of the Spitfire.

The main differences that change flying characteristics with the Mk VIII are the extra weight, stiffer wing, smaller ailerons, and the retractable tailwheel.

Some RL pilots extoled the handling of the Mk VIII over the mk IX. In game, if you spend a lot of time in the two, you can feel the difference. The VIII dives better, is more stable in the dive (doesn't 'wind up' as much), and retains its speed slightly better. The differences are marginal, but there.#

Flys really well with one wing too. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
