Maybe it's not so bad. With it cut into sections it would be easier to preserve.

It's still a shame, I thought the thing looked impressive in the photograph, albeit whole...

I think the essential part is "one of only four left in the world". You don't cut something like that into pieces.

Well, Finnish Vesikko is basicly a U-boat since it was the prototype of IIb -series. However it wasn't used by the Kriegsmarine.
