View Full Version : Those God Awful Campaign Pilot Portraits

I love this air sim series, but those Campaign Pilot Portraits are horrible. I have found more accurate Russian and German Photo Mods to replace the originals, but I cannot find any US Photos Anywhere.

Anyone know where I might find Mods for US Pilot Photos?? And of course Japanese too.

Fun thing is those guys in the horrible pics are the developers and other people involved in this sim...

That's true, i hope you were upset at the authenticity and not their looks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It is the very Historically Inaccurate "Farby" Look of the Photos I'm talking about. Not how the people look themselves...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, I agree. What they really need to do is line up a bunch of guys from local prison and take their portrait pic. I think those looks cannot be more *war authentic*.

Yes, no offence to the programmers, but those US Pilot faces really take away from that serious `fighter pilot` feel. I mean, they just DON`T look like fighter pilots. If you look at realistic fighter pics, even smiling, the pilots have a certain `edge` to them, which is missing here. Ok, ok it`s not a real war, I know, but you want the feel!

So if any one knows where we can get some authentic or at least `realistic` fighter pilot pics , we`d thank you! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I honestly don't understand why someone has a problem with them. It's your right to do so but I just don't understand (I don't even look at them, ever).

So you're in the mid of a horrible war, and concerned because your mates are ugly and don't look tough, mmmm? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

You better not enter with'em in the shower... (o so girly...) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

No offence ment but they look nothing like military pilots. (long hair, facial hair etc.)
I alway found it funny that a game as based in realism as this one would use those extremely farby pics. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

They don't look military at all. Long Hair, facial hair, fake looking uniforms. They are a real joke. I feel like I'm at a Woodstock Reenactment rather than a WWII Fighter Sim.

It is also very insulting to the real men who served in WWII.

Let`s not get too emotional about it. After all I think they were just fillers. All we need is to dig out some WWII fighter pics. If no one has any it` easy enough to do.

Just check the net and find as many WWII US pilot pics and pop `em into FB. At least the programers have allowed us the ability to do this.

The problem with those pic is that the guys just don't look old. When you look at a picture of your grandparents they look plain old, no matter what their real age was at the moment the photo was taken. They could have been 23 but when you look at the photo they appear to be really old. They're simply from another time. Their haircut, the way they smile (if at all), their clothes, all this makes the photograph authentic.
But when you just put nowadays people in old clothes and let them pose for a photo everyone will see that it's fake.
So I think it would be better to just use original photos from the time if you really can't live with these pictures.

I've tried countless times to replace those things with pics I've found online, but for some reason when I run the campaign they do not show up. Just Blank.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

8 bit, 256 colors, no layers. If you use 24/32 bit color, don't forget convert the *.bmp back to 8 bit before playing.

And yeah, take those hippies outta my barrack. It smells like 'maria' all around. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Check the image format - it must be exactly the same as the ones included with the game. I don't recall the exact height and width in pixels, but I do know the image colour must be 8 bits/pixel.
Once you have your replacement pic in the required size/colour depth it must then have be given one of the original names from the nationality folder (IIRC there are ~31 bmp images in each always numbered 1 - 31)

There was a set of historical photos used in an early version (Aces? or one of the patches?). I'm certain that set had some nice pics for the Japanese and possibly for the US as well.

I had the same feeling with the pictures first, but then all other alternatives need a lot of money from the game producer. But luckily you can get the pictures off if they bother you.

Same problem was / is with the F4 (Falcon4). People in the picture look like they are from the office I work. Definitely not military look. I always used to guess the job of the person that are in the picture (that's administrator, that's secretary, that's clening guy etc, that's the manager http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif).
And all of them wearing the same jump suit... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Ridiculous gripe here... "new low in whining", heh! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I figured that the guys in the portraits were the developers... I'm curious though, anyone know which one is Oleg? (If I had to guess, I suppose it would be that funny-looking one?)

It used to be even worse when you looked in net cache and saw some the mugs that were in there, lol! Even with skin downloads off, pilot skins still use to come through.

I haven't got PF yet, but I did notice that after a fresh install of AEP lately, and keeping skin downloads off, I do not get pilot skins in there anymore. I guess they changed it in a patch.

Well "BUZZ" If I was going to be used for the picture I would make sure that I had the proper uniform on, and was clean shaven

Pretty sure BOE did come with some different pics - shall have to see what I can do about getting those back again.

Otherwise its possible to replace the pilot bmp images with any 192x256x8bpp bmp image. Last night I trawled a few Russian sites and bagged a pile of authentic WW2 pilot photos (mostly of aces). With Irfanview it was the work of moments to crop/resize and change colour depth - vola! New set of pilot pics for my Russian campaign. Also picked out a particularly handsome chappy to be me (photo.bmp in DGEN folder).

"Farby" comes from the word "Farb." Farb is used in military reenacting groups, it means unauthentic. Some say it stand for "F***ing Ain't Right Boy" Hope that clears thing up. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

HaHaHa...Yea, I know its a mess. It means that things are not right. I beleive it refers mostly to the reenactor's uniform.

Example: A U.S. WWII reenactor using modern U.S. combat boots or web gear. Or a WWII German reenactor using a post war East German uniform. These people would be refered to as "Farbs" or "Farby." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

I guess it is an acronym(sp?) for...well you know. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
