20FPS increase is a massive jump just from a driver. I too would love to see some screens or tracks with fraps running. Poor OpenGl performance is the only reason I have not got Vista yet. I run an eVGA 7950GT also and Intel Core2Duo 6400 with 2GB 5400 OCZ RAM.

Just a little tip, if you get a program called "nvtweak" (just google it) with that program you can unlock some hidden settings in the nvidia control panel, they removed them for some reason!?, but anyway.. there you can activate a setting called "max frames to render ahead" that will make the gfx to take over more work from the cpu, that will squeeze out more fps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anything like that available for us ATI users?

I will leave Vista for a few months, probably longer.

Nothing I need thats not in XP and XP is pretty rock solid stable now.

Does anyone know of anythings which is a must have in Vista? I mean are the networking capabilities any better than XP's? Can you actually set up a home network without it being a complete Fluke if it works or not? (for example - running the network setup wizard 10 times and it finally works for no apparant reason on the 10th time even tho you told it completely the wrong information! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

I am the opposite of an 'early adopter'. I love trying to set stuff up as cheaply as I can. I love building the fastest PC I can for the least money http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I just bought a AMD 64 3700+ for 35, plus a MSI K8 Diamond SLI 40 and Geforce 7800 70 and 1gb stick of PC3200 RAM for 10.

Result , AMD 64 fast system with fast GFx card for under 200.

God I am a cheapskate and it feels gooood. lol

I wont get Vista until it comes down in price some, and the bugs are ironed out.

Looks like the folks at the bleeding edge are hanging in there.
You get your OS cheaper since you're early beta testers?

For ATI users, you can adjust the 'Flip Queue' setting which is the equivalent setting to the one above by installing and using ATI Tray Tools.

I am not a Vista fanboi. Nor do I care if anybody believes me. I have gone thru alot right now and having fun doing it. It seems right now that the opengl issue may be starting to get fixed with the latest drivers released yesterday. Just trying to be objective as I can.

Where can I find that? Or might it not be available? I'm still running a 9800 XT.

But AFAIK, Flip Queue is for D3D games.

Must have's in Vista...mmm...thats a toughie and one of the reasons why its a hard sell. For me probably the must have that I can think of (still using a RC1 version at work for application testing) is the integrated search. There is a search box in most interface screens in the OS just like Firefox or IE7 has. The search is actually useful too...it starts searching when you type and its generally accurate and lightning fast if its already indexed that area of your hard drive. If not then it can take as long as before but the interface is a little tighter so you can go and do something in another window while you wait. Search is built right into the start menu too.

That aside, there are some nice changes to the way that the start menu works, the way that the control panel is organized, the desktop color/theme/wallpaper/etc management is better and so forth.

None of these are must have but they are nice although to me they smack of things Microsoft should have done 4-5 years ago.

Also I do have to say that as much as the Aero Glass GUI is a frilly fancy extra that you don't need I do actually like it a fair bit. You don't have to have the see through fancy windows...you can make everything opaque and just leave it at that. Whats nice is that with the 3D acceleration you don't have any funky icon refreshing, windows that are blank because the program is loading or waiting, and so forth. It actually is much more human. Also windows opening and closing or being minimized are accompanied by a very subtle fade in/out animation. I realize this is all glitzy and eats into the memory but from a human interface design side of things it means that you aren't waiting for the interface to redraw nearly as much and everything feels very smooth.

This is all from a relatively fast Core 2 Duo laptop with a Intel GMA 950 graphics card on it. So its fast but not with the most powerful graphics card....good enough for all of the office applications I've thrown at it. And its RC1. So experience may vary.

So its good, with some good ideas, and if it finally gets sorted out driver wise then things will be ok. It won't be a stunningly better OS...just nice. If Microsoft had any legitimate competition in the hearts and minds of computer buyers then they'd have a serious problem on their hands. As it stands, this is your only choice.

Win XP. E6700 (91.47 drivers), 2 gigs Ram, twin 7950gt. And I've got seven windows open, the virus scanner up, and I'm listening to some Malo while playing the track. Not too shabby
I'd say. EDIT: It shows an average of 94.

I think Vista still has a long way to go. But I thank all who use it for testing and getting the bugs out for us folks.

Do not let the install start on it's own, shut it down, and to to My Computer, and what ever drive your DVD/CD is in and right click, you will find two exe's in there, one will be exe.a, use that one. load the game, restart, patch it, restart, and then defrag yer harddrive, IL2 gets loaded all over the place.

Amen to that!

Just getting ready to snag a 3700+ before there aren't any left. Highest CPU my three-year-old motherboard can handle...

JUST got a 6800XT and I'm still using the same old 1G memory I got with the board originally.

But IL-2 runs great with all my settings maxed out...no need to get crazy until BOB comes out.

Plan ahead and buy cheap! My wife is still amazed I haven't begged her to upgrade for years...

The key folks...spend extra on the motherboard.

Vista should eventually run games faster because the aero desktop is rendered by the graphics card, not the cpu. As an added benefit, when a user starts a game, the desktop and all other rendering is completely exited, freeing resources for the game.

I have heard that vista runs games much in the way an X-Box runs a game: it ignores all other tasks of OS maintenance (including desktop rendering, and devotes all resources to the game.

No offense, but that water=3 looks horrible. Is that under OpenGL or DirectX?

If it's OpenGL, I would turn on HardwareShaders=1 in the conf.ini file, it should be looking a lot better http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Congrats on the FPS increase anyway!

The problem with Vista is not that it's slow...

the problem is that it's a closed proprietary DRM hell designed to snuff out our liberties and kill kittens.

BoB will not be Vista-only. Thus, there is no need for me to get Vista, ever. It's not an operating system - it's an operating-hindrance system that as much as possible tries to limit what the user can do.
