It's a shame things like this happen and it hits especially close to home since I have 2 teenage daughters...and live in Florida.

Heartfelt condolences go out to her family...

My daughter is also 11 years old. They showed a demonstration on the Today Show of how easy it is to lure kids away, and I made both my kids watch it.

When I was single, I used to watch kids for a family near me. One of their little friends, a girl about this age, was picked up and taken to a spot that is a hangout for young kids making out, and this guy raped her. When she wouldn't stop telling him that she was going to the police, he stabbed her over 40 times with a screwdriver (the guy gave these details later when he was picked up by the police). She was still moaning when he started to leave, so he crushed her skull with a huge rock, and he told the police that she was still writhing when he left her that way. The guy seems to have commited suicide the next night while in jail. I was very close to this child, and drove her back and forth between her home, and her friends' house. Her mother was a drug addict, and wasn't real broken up about it. This whole thing nearly killed me. I couldn't stop thinking about what she must have gone through, her little face never out of my mind. I am losing it right now as I am retelling this. Anyway, this little girl in Florida has brought all this back on me once again. Its been 14 years since it happened, longer than she had lived, but it will haunt me for the rest of my life. I thank God that I met my wife right then to help me through this.

Yes, Bearcat, I'd like to have that guy in a room alone for a half hour. I'd recreate every horror that he inflicted on that poor, sweet child, and he wouldn't get the opportunity to commit suicide to rob justice.

Tsisqua.

Your words sent a chill through me, and I too felt sorrow.

As a father to three daughters (one is nearly 16 and youngest is 3) this is also my fear and education is the only way.

I'd let him have half an hour with you.
Then a day or two with her poor family, whith a crack squad of paramedics in attendance.

And then half a century in solitary with a suicide watch, after 50 yrs are up let him take his own life.

May she rest in peace in the knowledge that her family will get through it (I hope).

It was all so needless in the 1st place. He was arrested and tried on the same type of case in 97 but found not guilty by IMO a rather witless jury.

His defensive case was that he was trying to tell her not to run into the road. How many people try to help someone from running into the road with the statement "" Stop stuggling or I'll cut you"" ?

I understand Beyond a reasonable doubt and all but come on, at some point common sense needs to kick in.

OK... rant over, got carried away.

My prayers to her family.

I am also a father and husband and this crap has to stop. Why are these insects allowed to roam around free?.. And who is it that is so tolerant as to keep releasing criminals back into society only to perpetrate more brutal crimes?.. Don't be afraid to have a family - be willing to condemn criminals when they are caught - hold criminals accountable.. Don't let
yourselves be victimized by repeat offenders.

As a father of young children (especially a 10-year old daughter) these stories bother me immensely. A little, beautiful life gone and a family destroyed.

I have a sixteen month old baby boy and a baby girl due in April.

Stories like this make me sick.

I hope and I pray that everyone who has children will take every possible precaution to keep them safe.

I'm sorry, but I feel compelled to ask this:

Was this little girl walking home alone? By herself? If even just a short distance...

Not in this world my friends, not in this world we live in.

The death penalty would be too good for that monster. I have two young daughters and I'm with the earlier poster about letting these "things" loose on society. That guy and "things" like him should be gassed like they're diseased animals because that's all they are.

My heart-felt condolences to the family.

He murderd. He needs to die. We as a socity have a responsility give him the only just punnishmnet for murder; execution. I'm going to be realy mad if he pulls some insanity crap and gets away with life in jail. If he's smart enough to knowingly kill he's smart to die. Then he'll be MORE than taken care of in hell.

This is why it is so important for us to be there as fathers. This is why you have to think before you whip it out.......since every time you screwyou have the potential to end up creating another person. I dont know if her mother was a single mom or not..or if her father was present..but I bet that b@stard that did this to her has a tale of abuse and a rotten life. Mind yoy now that is definitely no excuse for such a henious crime but it is interesting that most of these people who do stuff like this come from broken, abusive or neglectful homes. There is a deinite connection. My kids range in age from 6 to 27.. my grandkids from 5mos to 7yrs. Im feeling it... That poor family. I couldnt even imagine going through that. It makes me cry just to think about it.

You said it right there Bearcat. Kids are so fantastic, I can't even imagine what it would be like to have grandkids.

And as a father, I can't imagine how a father could turn his back on his kids. So many problems in life are the responsibility of dead-beat dads.

Oh man, don't even get me started on this stuff...

Death penalty is easy way out... put him in gen-pop and let everyone know why he`s in prison. Nice and painfull ending...then longer then better.

As usual (in fact, it is becoming disturbingly predictable in these sorts of cases), he appears to have a past record of violent sexual crime. When will our society learn that this is not a behavior that can be reformed, or an illness that can be cured? Not only should he now die or rot in prison, that should have happened the first time he preyed on an innocent. The system that released a dangerous animal back into society bears as much blame.

Even with a lot of prudence, the reality my friend is none of us are truly safe if someone is willing to do whatever it takes to harm our families.

Some have briefly mentioned about how criminals plea insanity or point to similar abuse in their past as a way to avoid punishment.

If this is the way courts want to address such terrible crimes, then shouldn't we automatically lock-up/terminate everyone who has had a "bad" past, since they have a higher risk to harm someone else in a similar manner?

I think most would hope that they, more than anyone, would know how truly hurtful their acts of violence are. So stop (courts) using this nonesense to reduce/avoid punishment. Let everyone answer for their actions.

And I agree the prison system is completely unable to reform the heart of a criminal.
