OK, I am still quite sick, but I'm quite close to getting the beta out to you-somehow. Please be ready for a dowbload.

While playtesting, I will need you to focus on a few things:

1) What works. What doesn't. Are you getting a constant 'mission failed' message? Does your flight not find it's target often? Are you confused by the campaign structure? Are you not leading a flight? Please pay attention to the functionality above all else. I hope it's a fun job, but please remember: you're de-bugging for and with me on this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Most of the missions do not require more than survival, but some have a specific goal, and might have a bug or two

2) Did you see any 'void' skins that indicate I screwed up with skin placement? there's a lot of stuff in a few of these missions; I hope I didn't miss a skin

3)Do the tracks work? You should see four: Intro, with text, a movie after missions 12 and 21, and also an epilogue movie at the end. The middle two correspond with moves made by your squadron. Hopefully, you actually see them! All have text descriptions.

4) Is anything at all confusing? My logic isn't everyone's. let me know if you didn't 'get' what I was doing in the campaign

I would very much like to say to my Playtesters that the campaign will be available for you to download in 'beta' form tonight or tommorow evening. I am miserbaly ill, and am most interested in sleeping, but I'll work on it some and try to get it out.

Thank you again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've been quietly awaiting your AVG campaign!

While I'm still working through the BoB DGEN campaign, I'd switch gears and start yours if you need me, an almost-intermediate-novice. I'm not a speed demon, though.

Thank you for the kind offers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Fortunatly for me, I already have enough playtesters. If I add more, co-ordinating any sort of effort to make corrections to the campaign will take a long time. But thanks for the thought

Look forward to your campaign. Wimpy title, tho--IMHO. "Cute."

Chuck_Older
02-15-2005, 07:25 PM
That confuses me...I did not name the Flying Tigers as such. I didn't make Disney conjure up their famous 'flying tiger' image; I didn't make it cute. I find it very odd that you put it that way.

I could have called it "Fei hu dui" but nobody would know what it meant. I could have called it "Flying Tigers" but that is pedestrian and expected. "Tales of the AVG" might be a tad grandiose and Speilberg-ish. "They Flew for China" sounds like a dimestore novella

I could have given it a bloody, razor sharp name like "Blood on their Claws", but that would make me vomit through my eyeballs in disgust. "Burma Banshees and China Tigers" is...fey, if you follow.

I gave it a name that wasn't stupid, trite, vulgar or demeaning...I hold the American Volunteer Group in the highest regard, and have no intention of casting even the tiniest hint of a shadow on them or their actions. "When Tigers Could Fly" is evocative, a small play on words concerning the nickname given the AVG, and quite descriptive as to the nature of the campaign. "Cute"...no, I really can't agree with that opinion, I am sorry...I wonder what name you might suggest?

Wow Chuck, the fact that you put so much thought into the name alone makes me know that this campaign will be most excellent. Keep up the good work, and I think the title you have chosen kicks butt.

Jungmann

Chuck

No need to get your shorts in a knot. I just didn't think the name was up to the history and tradition of the AVG--again, my opinion.

I don't think you're there yet. I'd keep working on it.

For what it's worth Chuck, I like the title. I have had a profound respect for the AVG as well, since I was younger and found out some of the stories about them and their work "in country". I can't wait to give your campaign a go, as it were, and I wish you luck in completing it. With the effort you put into naming it, I can only imagine that it will be very good.

Jungmann-

I really can't follow you at all. I'm a bit sick, but are you feeling well yourself? Why the snappy 'shorts in a knot' thing? If I had wanted to call you names, or told you off, I would have done so.

You have been an intelligent and articulate poster, and I'm a bit surprised that you don't understand what I posted.

You posted your opinion, and I posted why I feel your opinion is ill-founded, then asked for your suggestion. There is no need for a confrontation.

What do you think is a name up to the history and tradition of the Flying Tigers? The best name for the campaign is "Fei hu dui"- but nobody would know what the heck that it meant. That was my original title, and I scrapped it because of it's obscurity. How many folks who aren't AVG fans even know what AVG means? Asking that the average player of the sim to know Fei hu dui...that stretches the imagination. But the one I have chosen has so much more going for it in the clarity department. I would like to know what name you might suggest. I quite like my title, but it's ok with me that you disagree- to be perfectly honest, it's myself I am pleasing here, and if others like it that's great, but it is not my primary concern. I do have an interest in your suggestions though, because if you take a moment to consider it, it's not an easy thing to name and still create minimal confusion.

Of the campaigns in WWII, the AVG's campaign is the most romaticised and least understood. Even in FB. I mean, the H81A-2 doesn't even really fit on one single map we have. The default appaearance for the aircraft is an AVG Hawk...but it's FM is the P-40B...which is almost certainly and documentably incorrect in several areas, such as fuel tank sealing effectiveness, pilot armor, ammo capacity, wing armament, gunsight type...and most importantly engine output. I am not complaining, it got made and I'm happy to have it, but my point is that even the developers can't be experts on all things- I can't expect the majority of players to be as well.

Not sure where the defensiveness comes from on your part. I know I have a reputation as having a sharp tongue, but when that shows itself, there's no mistaking it for something else. I would be blunt and to the point. I would have simply posted "So what's your title, Steinbeck?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif It's belittling, confrontational, to the point, and challenging all in one short sentence- I like economy of snappy comebacks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif But if I were upset with you, I certainly wouldn't bother explaining twice, probably not even once.

Not my job to come up with a title for your campaign--it's your campaign.

But I thank you and guys like you for taking the time and trouble to design offline campaigns for guys like me who have neither the time nor the talent. I look forward to downloading it and I'm sure I'll play it with pleasure.

I don't know what is going on here. I am not challenging you. You gave the opinion that it wasn't quite right, and the natural thing to do is ask for your opinion on what it might be. It's not often you toss in two cents and then won't discuss it afterwards, Jungmann. But you refuse to now...

It's not my job to name it either.

Just go and register, then after I put the .exe in my dropload box, you just need to go and pick it up- but I do beleive I'll need e-mail addys for each of you. You can PM me with them if you like

I'll explain fully once it's up and ready for you

A quote from "PC Pilot" Jan/Feb 2005 currently on the newsstands,. They have a review of Pacific Fighters which contains;

"One of the less familiar names in the Allied section of the Quick Mission Builder plane list - the Hawk 81A-2 - will hopefully tempt some talented third-party contributor into creating a Flying Tigers map and campaign. Even if no one answers the call, then the presence of Ki-43 Oscars does at least mean you can get something of the flavor of that unusual air war through quick missions or self-built sorties."

It looks like you have answered the call already. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Leadspitter-
I don't know how we got our wires crossed on the skins thing... this is just a beta, I can (and will) change a few things. I am frankly unhappy with the 1st Squadron P-40E skin I have used...I'd love to use a P-40E skin of yours, I don't know if you have a 1st Squadron AVG generic skin for the P-40E...I can't find any Adam and Eves skins for the P-40E at all, I have settled for a good one, not sepctacular, but good, and all it has is a blue fuselage band. I would like to use a much better one if possible. I'd love to use one of your skins, there's always room in the credits! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I am uploading the beta tonight. Bird_brain is giving it a quick QC and then packing it as an exe for me, then I will make the beta.exe available. I will let playetesters know when it's up. Should be this weekend, I think http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yakman-

I appreciate your offer! I must kindly decline I think; I had talked to Lead about doing this a while ago, and somehow, we managed to fall right out of touch with each other concerning the skins. If, however, he has no 1st Squadron P-40E skins, I'd be delighted to use yours, as I have no real ist Squadron P-40E skins.

One of the biggest things remaining to do is actually to correct the lack of proper 1st Squadron skins in the campaign.

I had originally only wanted one skin- a C-47- in the campaign. But as I progressed with it, I realised that not having some skins would be a mistake. Originally, all three Sqaudrons were 'default' skins. Due to the way the campaign works (I didn't want the player controlling more than four planes, the AVG tended to operate in smaller groups, mostly twos from what I gather), I used 1st Squadron as the regiment in FMB for AVG fighters the player wouldn't control, and 2nd Squadron for transport planes, for the sake of simplicity.

Then when the campaign almost doubled in size from around 20 missions to over 30, I wanted the things that would really make the campaign 'good', like an intro movie with credits, interlude tracks, and an epilogue track. The I realised that skins were nothing in size on a disc compared to a 4 minute interlude track.

But I never found 1st Sqaudron skins I was happy with- coincidentally, Il2Skins has been down almost the entire time I have been seriously working on this project. About the time I realised the campaign had gotten detailed enough so that players who knew the AVG's history- my real target group- could forgive the slight changes I made to the timeline of events and locations of a few places, they would certainly note that '1st' Squadron planes not only had 2nd Squadron's fuselage band color, it also had the 3rd Sqaudron's Hell's Angel!

I ignored the issue as much as possible, because I needed to finish the campaign firstly, and also because I knew that playetesting would need to be done, and I still had time to fix the skin issue, but skins, identification of skin artists for skins I have, and the search for the skins I still need, has been tougher than I thought

But fixing problems is what the beta is for, I suppose...

A lot of folks are thanking me and whatnot. I aprreciate it, I really do, but thank me after it's done and you like the campaign. Also don't forget to thank all the folks that helped me make it- I hardly did this alone. Skin artists add so much to the final product. The folks that inspired me to do it added a lot by their suggestions and input. Technically, I made all the elements in each mission, but some things have been corrected to make the mission work, and not by me. Also, the hows and whys of how the files in FMB relate to the completed campaign, how to make the campaign get to where it should go, and small non-gameplay technical stuff is not 100% my doing, either- I had help. I'll take most of the credit (or blame) when it's done [greedy sumb!tch] but the names you will see in the intro credits deserve to be thanked as well- plus one skin artist is still totally unknown to me- I just know who made the template. The person who made the Camco c-47 skin deserves thanks...and I can't even credit him or her because no amount of searching has turned up a name. But hold off the celebrating until you play it. It might be the crummiest thing besides burnt toast you ever saw.

There looks to be two issues with the Beta right now, and I am not sure how to address them:

1) radio commands will seem to be for the VVS (Russian) side. For instance "para1" will be a choice for a 'target' to give commands to.

I have never seen anything but this, flying for an Allied side. Not in the camapigns that came with PF, flying for the US, or in 3rd party static campaings flying for the British

It seems that perhaps, an add-on such as BoE can change that 'para1' to 'flight1'. This is simply the theory at the moment, but I think perhaps the fact that I do not have BoE may make players who do have BoE installed get 'para1' instead of 'flight1' as a command 'target' for orders.

I cannot fix this, if this is the case.

rest assured, you are flying for the USAAF in this campaign- it cannot be flown from any other campaign 'branch' but the USAAF. If you aren't flying for the USAAF, you aren't playing my campaign at all- that's just how the files find their paths, and it's how I made the campaign. If any doubt persists, please click the 'arming' button on any breifing screen- the AVG insignia will be present on top of the screen as well as "3rd Sqaudron AVG"

No way I could have seen this curveball coming, I'm afraid

2) I included a splash screen. I am told, that instead of seeing this splash screen as the missions load, at least one player is now getting a blank screen.

On my PC, this splash screen works perfectly. Unless there is some kind of corruption with the file, this is another issue that I cannot see a solution too. removing the splash may be the only answer, but I will have to see.

If possible, could all playtesters indicate if they are experiencing problems 1) and or 2), and if so, any additional info such as what version of the sim you're playing, and if you have 3rd party add-ons such as Battle over Europe installed?

There should be four tracks you see in the campaign- One- intro. Two- after you land at Magwe. Three- after you depart for Kunming from Loiwing. Four-epilogue

Any anolmalies should be brought to my attention ASAP . i am very afraid that something intrinsic about a 3rd party add-on is causing issues with my static campaign

It may be useful if playtesters indicate to me what, if any, add-ons they have installed, and if they have none, if the splash screen is working correctly. Spotting my splash is easy- it is a bunch of H81A-2s on a dispersal field (actually Toungoo- you may recognise it from the 1st mission). The give-away is that I didn't edit out the speedbar in the lower right hand corner

Please read, playtesters
IF you have CTDs or white screens while loading missions in my campaign, REMOVE my splashscreen, manually, from the simulation

It doesn't replace your existing splash like it should- it makes two available, I suspect, and this is causing issues

If you have issues with CTD or white screens during loading my campaign, please do the following: (you may wish to backup files first! If you are unsure of what I'm asking you to do, STOP! Ask for clarification)

Open 'my computer'. Open the drive FB is installed on. Open 'program files' Open the Ubi Soft folder, and then 'Il-2Sturmovik:Forgotten Battles'.

Open 'missions', then 'campaign"

Open the last folder, 'US'

there will be a TGA file in there, called "background_AVG"

Remove it. Place it on your desktop or something

See if your problems go away

I'm getting the white splash and as I said before the "para" thing. I have BOE, The last Days, Combat Over Europe, Case Blue and Barbarossa. I bet its BOE that's causing the screw up.

Campaign is great so far by the way. Nice balance of planes in the air and activity on the ground versus frame rates. I was planning on playing it on my LAN machine but its running super smooth on my online one which I'd say is about average. I love the way the bases are populated, looks like a real airfield instead of an abandoned emergenyc strip, very cool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. The challenge of taking off and landing in the Hawk81 also adds an interesting element to the campaign. It keeps you on edge the entire flight knowing that no matter how well you do you still need to land that thing.

I also have BOE installed. I will try opening & saving the missions in FMB & see if it makes it go away. I highly recommend d/ling the 'patched' file for that TGA. The splash I included is in the wrong format, size-wise. I can't imagine why my machine isn't screwing up...my TGA is the wrong one, too

I am afraid you'll get some CTDs without either removing it, or unzipping the 'corrected' file

That Riviera is d@mn near as quick to accelerate as my 462 cubic inch V-8 powered '70 GS455 clone. Of course, I still need to degree the 462's cam, rejet the carb, and re-curve the distributor. I'm up though mission ten. Just a couple things. The use of li2s instead of c47s was intentional right? Did the AVG arm their transports. If so that's pretty cool. Also on mission seven or eight (the one where you and two others go to strafe the Japanese foward airbase, there is a blue plane that appears and then disappears off to the East of the main base. Its not a big deal but you might want to check it out to get the campaign perfect. I haven't been paying as much attencion to spelling errors as I probably should be (I'll make a definite effort to try harder on that) but the briefings themselves are fantastic. Lot of history but the way its introduced it makes a lot of sense. The whole thing is friggin awesome. I'm hooked.

Also, I don't know if this already exists and its just didn't happen on my computer, but it would be cool to have the campaign in the single player mission area too so that you can select and play specific missions out of the campaign.

The spelling errors are many and I am very unhappy...when I type, often words like "there" become "their" and vice-versa. The misuse of the possesive is a thing I strive to correct in writing- obviously my typing mind doesn't register a difference! I also do this fantastic thing where I type words like this:
"Sincey esterday, flighto perations have come toa stand-still". My problem is I can almost type- but not quite.

The text function in the FMB drives me nuts- it is very difficult for me to read my text while proof-reading in the FMB , and I end up doing it from the mission instead. Once I read my breif about a dozen times my eyes glaze over...

The Li-2 thing was because of static objects, I think, BigBear, I beleive that what you are referring to is Li-2s on the ground as opposed to C-47s in flight- the problem was, if I used a C-47 as a static aircraft, it defaults to a D-day invasion stripe model, which is of course unusable. The light green Li-2 at least has no stripes in static display- I assume that is what you mean. In some cases I had used a white army C-47, but that can cause issues with autopilot and time skip- because the game interprets that as an enemy aircraft. But I have no info that indicates AVG or CAMCO or CNAC aircraft were armed. The Li-2s are there simply for technical reasons- if an Li-2 was seen in flight, again, please tell me right away what the mission number was, because that needs to be fixed ASAP. In the first segment, i thought players may like to hit 'autopilot' right away- so the 'no army' C-47s were out. Maybe I should revise that? What do you think- will a lot of players want to use autopilot and see the 'enemy nearby' message and get confused? I do violate that rule later, where white army C-47s are present at an AVG base, but only because I wanted a change of scenery concerning the paint scheme

The disappearing plane is in the Rangoon segment? I'll have to check on this...could be I forgot to delete that aircraft while revising the mission

Chuck_Older
02-23-2005, 05:12 PM
Oh, BigBear-

I think you have played the mission in which your flight of four assist other AVG Hawks in attacking a large formation of Bombers- it's like close to 50 aircraft in the air at once

How was your PC performance? Would you describe your PC as top of the line? A moderate machine? What graphics settings do you use?

Another playtester has said he had a 'slide-show' during that mission. He would like to see less aircraft, I think. I can understand his point, gameplay is paramount. The first part of the campaign builds up to a crescendo on that mission, though, showing the overwhelming numbers of attackers, and I want to avoid cutting the enemy forces down- actually, it should involve (many!) more IJA bombers

I think that what i am going to try is to make it very clear that many aircraft will be rendered during that mission. Perhaps in the breifing, as a note at the end, I'll warn that those with older or slower PCs may wish to turn down graphics on this mission? I don't know, but that mission is probably my personal favorite out of them all and I think it's a great experience zipping through that throng of bombers, so I don't want to reduce the enemy's numbers

3.JG51_BigBear
02-23-2005, 05:51 PM
I haven't seen any Li-2s in flight. Only on the ground, makes total sense now. I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't been really looking. The amount of detail that went into objects on the airfields is awesome by the way.

I've been playing the campaign on my online computer which is a 2.8 P4 with only 512MB ram and a fx5500 OC and that mission ran great with all the setting turned up except for landscape which is at Excellent. Resolution at 1152x864 32 bit. There is the slightest of stutters when the enemy formation "materialized" but other than that it ran perfectly and I was really surprised at the number of aircraft in the air. I think it helps that they are at such low altitude.

I wouldn't change the mission because so far it has been the most exciting ones (even though I think the intercept over the harbor has been my favorite so far) and it ran just fine on what I would consider a more or less average machine especially as far as vid card and ram goes.

Another thought: you might want to warn people in the mission briefing that firing on the Japanes night bombers (cr42s if I'm not mistaken) with four thirties and two fiftiest creates one heck of an unexpected explosion. I got three of them without really getting into convergence range but when I got to the fourth one I was dead on and the thing turned into a fireball about 95M in front of my bird and nailed my engine. Luckily there was an abandoned airfield right next to the railroad tracks but it was a harry experience landing the Hawk at night without an engine and in a field with no markers.

Well, in the readme http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif, I mention that the H81A-2 we have in PF/FB is underpowered compared to the hawks the AVG flew- by about 20% - and why that happened

Turning overheat off allows a small benefit in terms of no drag from the radiator gills being open, and unlimited time at top speed- the real AVG Hawks could reportedly go 370mph in level flight. Our H81s will never do close to that

Once or twice you may find it hard to catch an enemy. But since you have overheat on, I am curious to see how things work out in that regard- I don't think it's critical, but hearing your possible troubles catching enemies in certain missions because of or in spite of having overheat on may be worthwhile to find out about

So far it hasn't been an issue, looking forward to it becoming one though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. I've actually become very impressed with the Hawk 81. Once I figured out the takeoff and landing procedures and figured out how I wanted to trim it, its actually quite an effective little airplane for the time period. The armament is awesome too, especially against the Ki-43s and the "Night Fighters." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif (I really like your choice of replacement aircraft too. They do a great job.)

While cruising to the target I usually leave the throttle at around 65%-70%. While the fighting is going on I run the engine at about 95% throttle, like I do in just about every other plane, so I don't need to open the radiator. I use the top of the power band for emergencies. I've also been flying a little higher than briefed altitudes to have the energy to dive through the bomber formations and recover to a proper altitude to do it again.

More on the 'para' versus 'flight' thing

I don't know why this should matter, but I use the sim through my 'il2hk.exe', which is an Historically accurate markings enabling program

Well, I ran the sim without that. The first time I played in the QMB, I saw, for the first time ever, "flight" listed instead of "para" in the radio comms menu!

Problem solved? Not quite. I ran a campaign mission next...still 'para'. I went back to QMB. I got 'para' again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I dumped a campaign mission into the single player folder and played it...I got 'flight' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Nowhere can I see 'flight' in the comm menu unless I play a single mission http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

OK, good. I couldn't remember if I had put it in the right place

I found a potential issue with one of the Magwe missions.

The one in which you escort photo-recon Blenheims may be trouble- it's a escort mission, with 'escort blenheims' as primary goal

Well, I smoked the enemy, landed back at base...no 'mission succes' even after the Blenheims landed

I haven't figured out the trouble just yet, but I wanted to mention it as a heads-up

All I can say is 'not yet it's not' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Very strange thing...for two missions I had 'flight' listed.

Now here's the really odd part to me-

I have the player's flight listed as "Blue Flight" in breifings, because that's what the control tower had been saying: "Blue leader, you're cleared to land"

Well, when I saw the 'flight' nomenclature, imagine my surprise to learn that Green flight was really my flight according to the comm menu http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

So what to do? Do I make the radio comm 'wrong' or the control tower 'wrong'????

Now, I should have seen this coming. I should have known Green flight was the last flight, that's what a lot of the US histories I read parts of say concerning the flights. But the tower was calling my flight "blue flight". D@mmit

Actually I just did some more testing and I have to revise my original statement. Looks like Maddox got it right for the USAAF after all.

USAAF (sorry about the quality - but you can just make out the writing.

According to Mike Green, the researcher for NTESLA's Commonwealth voice-pack, the RAF should see:-

1=Red
2=Yellow
3=Blue
4=Green

Instead...

RAF

As for some people seeing Para1 etc. instead - it's a mystery!

Yes, I was referring to USAAF. It is easy to remember because it is the same colors as the flag "The old red, white & blue" I am sure they altered it from the British method for that reason. Not sure about the RAF but I imagine you are right.

Would you like to install the AVG_Beta & see if it happens to you?
I just installed a clean FB/ACE/PF/Patch3.03m/Patch3.04m/BOE/BOEPatch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
The only things I have loaded other than that are AVG_Beta & "The Blue" to copy some GB campaign files from. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Do you think the patch versions or install order could be causing this?

My offer still stands - yes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've eliminated BOE BTW. I simply renamed my DGen folder temporarily (it's the only folder any BOE data is stored in) and flew some RAF and USAAF mission.

For me I never saw Para1, but red flight instead, as soon as PF was intalled - v3.0 ++

So I picked the gampaign up again today and I started playing, I think its mission 13, and I've played it five or six times and I can't beat it. Its the one with two oscars and maybe four single engined bombers. I take out the oscars in the first head on pass and then dive on the bombers. I get all four to jetison bombs and they start taking evassive actions and falling off course. Each time my wingman and I are doing a pretty good job of taking out the bombers and then I get a mission failed message. Every time. The bomber don't get near anything important, in fact with all the turning and manuevering they really don't go past where I intercepted them. What am I missing?

I'm at work right now...what is the mission about? Are you defending river traffic by any chance?

I had a time-out issue with that one for the mission goal, but I thought I had fixed it

If that's the same mission you are having trouble with, there are two flights of at least three bombers, not just one. They are flying low and it's hard to see both flights

To be honest, if that's the one you're having trouble with, I just played it the other day and it was fine- my wingman did something stupid, so I had to take on both Oscars while I ordered him to take out the bombers

I'll play it again tonight after work.

If this isn't the one I'm thinking of, could you give me more info on the mission you're having trouble with?

I played through mission #13 with 2 Oscars & 3 Bombers. It was "Defend the Fuel Dump" I shot up the Oscars and they ran away. Went after the bombers and they jettisoned their bombs. I got 2 bombers and my wingie got 1. My engine koncked out from return fire and I landed on a roadway below. I sent my wingman after the fighters and as soon as he opened fire, I got "Mission Complete". There is nothing wrong with the mission, you just have to keep the bombers from dropping on the fuel dump.
#s 12 & 14 worked fine also.

That mission is the weakest one in the campaign. I really don't like it.

Originally it was different, but as I learned a little more fact from fiction I changed a lot of things.

BigBear is pretty good with his assesments, usually...I am worried that this mission could be trouble. I've never had trouble with 'mission success' in it...the riverboat one, yes, this one, no. I was positive it was the riverboat defense mission http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I'm going to triple-check on this mission here. Maybe the time-out is too long? I'll check

I really don't think the bombs hit the fuel dump. Before you go nuts Chuck, I'll fly it again and really give it the gas after takeoff, I did on a couple of trys thus far but this time I'm just going to give it full blast as long as I can, and try to intercept the flight as far from the dump as I possible. If I get a mission success I'll let you know, if not I'll send a track.

3.JG51_BigBear
03-07-2005, 04:15 PM
Sorry to make you worry Chuck, it was my fault. After looking at the tracks I saw that all six times I played the mission at least one wounded bomber would end up crashing into the dump. It was very strange. I'll continue moving forward. I finished this mission and the one after so I'm looking forward to escorting a recon flight of blenheims after I finish reading con law tonight.

C_O, there is nothing wrong with #13, but your riverboat defence mission is a real bit@h! It took me 3 tries and I finally skipped to waypoint 3 and floored it to get there early. I sent my wingie against the 2 Oscars & took on all 6 bombers. I blew through them and gave each one a good long burst as I went by. I shot one down outright, but right as we got over the riverboats, I ran out of ammo. The fighters shot down my wingman, but he distracted them long enough for me to screw up the bomber attack. 4 of the bombers eventually augered in and I made dummy runs on them about 1/4 of the way back to base until I finaly got "mission success".
The mission works, but it definately rates as "ultra hard". Anyone using autopilot to get to waypoint #2 is doomed to failure. I will send you a PM tomorrow with recommended solutions. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You might want to lower level of AI bomber in the night intruder mission. The thing was stall fighting in the dark and his rear gunner was picking me to pieces. I tried three times to do it the honest way but finally I just increased the brightness on the monitor becasue I was getting sick.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Maybe. I've also seen that d@mn plane crash into the ground while strafing. I'm not exactly sure, but I don't think destruction of that enemy is the primary goal- landing at the airbase is, if I recall. Maybe I should make a recon point just after the runway the Primary Goal so that even if you get shot down, you can proceed with the campaign as long as you live?

Did you have trouble with the riverboat mission, BigBear?

How did the escort recon flight go?

I lost my 1st 2 aircraft in the campaign on the night bomber mission. Drove into the ground chasing the little bugger, but I got him in the end. He turns his lights on about 1km away from the field. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Recon flight was a snap. It was a long, long, long flight but the Ki43s were dispatched quickly and all the Blenies made it back to base just fine.

On the river boat mission I just sorta did what I always do. I grabbed some alt on the way to the intercept point and dropped on the bombers like a bat at out of hell. I was luky enough to hole two of the bombers on the first pass through the formation while my wingman happily entertained the Oscars. I just kept zooming up and dropping on the formation until I ran out of ammo. Three of them eventually went in. I didn't really think the mission was that bad, (it got hairy when the Oscars got done playing with my wingman and I had to make a run for it). It was tough but after flying so many bomber intercepts with the Hawk it seemed like just another day over China. But then I had no ability to intercept the night bomber so it was probably just luck that it worked out.

OK, in riverboat defense mission I have changed the patrol route, some speeds, and some altitudes, both player and enemy

Player now attacks bombers head-on, from the south as they approach from the north, at a reasonable distance from the target- player also flies directly to the defense point now

In the night bomber mission, I have changed the mission success criteria to a recon point just before take-off; no landing required. Player gets 'success' for just trying to take out the night raider now. As long as you live, you succeed, which is a victory in itself http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I also spotted a mistake with a green light just laying on the ground, should have been on a building http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Quick idea. There's a mission where you're supposeed to be taking off from a bombed out field where your new P-40Es once stood to intercept bombers coming to finish you off but the airfield looks so clean. There's nothing there. The level of detail on your bases thus far has been amazing and I'm a huge fan of the little engine fires and that one plane that didn't really make it off the runway. The details are awesome. This particular base just looks kind of empty compared to the others.

Is that the one just after Loiwing is bombed and all the P-40Es are destroyed? You're taking off from the base were you were supposed to pick up the P-40Es and then head to Kunming?

It's supposed to be clean- no targets for the IJA to bomb http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Open the mission in FMB and check out the woods just to the west of the base, there's a clearing, the ground crews have been busy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

OK playtesters http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm getting feedback on a regular basis from two of you, I got some very good constructive criticism from another at the beginning... and some others have given positive feedback here and there

please, let me know impressions about missions! We are wrapping up soon, I think- I should have all the clues I need about problems in a short while

If anything, at all, confused you, didn't seem right, didn't work, gave you too much trouble, was too easy, etc...tell me. I don't bite (hard)

Even if it's to say "Hey that mission in which we did (whatever it was) was too much like the others" or "This other one was too easy" or "I get way too many kills" or "I can't get a kill"

This is supposed to be fun, not easy, not hard, not a history lesson (although I do try very hardto 'play by the rules' with history when the sim allows it). I hope to teach a little about the AVG with this one, but if you aren't having a good time, I am failing

Hey Chuck

Last night, I was reading Hunter S. Thompson's collection of correspondence he wrote in the 60s and 70s . There is quite a funny story about a 'flying tiger' pilot going mental with a loaded 38 in a Saigon bar just before the end of Vietnam.

He eventually has a heated (and violent) discussion with a 'Limey' about the relative merits of British and American colonialisim.

Sorry, OT but quite interesting I though....

I fixed mission #34-

the issues

#1- I always make the player take 75% fuel (to partially offset the power we don't have in the AVG Hawks, which weren't regular Curtiss H-81A-2 with regular Allsions). So you just about run out of gas, since you don't have the full load anyway.

#2 Long flight path-I deleted a needless way-point- I had it in because the bombers were doing odd things in regards to flight spacing. I altered the waypoints a little and that's fixed

#3 set a timeout of 55 minutes for the escort goal

Unfortunately, this may screw up the epilogue track in the beta campaign, because you may not have enough time to finish the mission. But I have just fixed those problems

Hammerd says 'sure why not' for his skin to be used, so it's almost all over but the final release http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It won't make any difference to the track. It won't play until you exit the mission and hit "apply". It will just give you "mission complete" if 75% of the bombers are in good shape after 55 minutes.
