Having flown this much-maligned bird (or more specifically the P-39N-1) on and off for the last couple of years I've gradually come to the conclusion that it is indeed a great Ostfront fighter. Consider these points:

1) The Eastern Front airwar was fought at low altitude where the Cobra r0XXorZ. It can easily turn with the G2, it's pretty fast down low and the nose cannon packs a tremendous punch.

2) It's a hard plane to fly, which is great if you like challenges. If you can t'n'b with the Messerschmitt without stalling the bugger you _know_ you've learnt something!

3) It's a great jabo machine. Load her up w/ a FAB-250 and you're ready to inflict some serious pain on your enemies.

4) The FM is great fun, and matches pretty well with what I've read about the real machine. You actually have to pay attention to your trim when your airspeed and / or power settings change, and landings are tricky. Most satisfying IMHO!

5) It's a beautiful bird. That's in the eye of the beholder, sure, but at least in my book it looks very sleek and futuristic.

6) It's a great "mini" boom'n'zoomer. You don't want to take her too high, of course, but she handles the vertical pretty well up to 6000ft. or so.

So all in all an excellent Ostfront fighter indeed! Just as it was IRL, BTW http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A great plane indeed.

I don't find it too dangerous when i'm in a 109 though... I fly it mainly on the pacific. It's a great ride against zekes.

I don't like the big cannon though. Nothing bigger than 20mm for me.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes , it's a great plane , one of my favourite fighter , very rewarding to perform well in it , always flew VVS for 3 years until recently that i fly more US side , and P-39 has always been my favourite fighter along the Yaks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

P-39 are at equal term with the Yaks , for example the P39N is more often than not at equal term in speed than a Yak1B in combat situation (average combat speed ) although it's slower in ideal top speed , its climbrate is worse than Yaks , but you can dive at higher speeds , you are more manoeuvrable at high speeds , P-39 is more solid , it has more range , it can attack the bomber (one of the best bomber killer )with its powerrful cannon , while the Yak has real shortage of power and amount of ammunition for this , and P-39 is a very effective tank killer and ground attack plane (they even attacked boats in the Baltic front succesfully ) and a real terror in head-ons , very polyvalent aircraft like the FW-190 .

Overall i love this plane because its combat speed is high , great aerodynamic profile so it retains very well its energy and speed with good prop.pitch management , very good in sustained turns and can follow quite well in a dive its ennemies until 700+km/h , in real life it was a reliable aircraft and engine (hard winter take off ) with a very good radio which is very important at the time and could take severe punishment although many Soviet pilots removed part of the armor to make it even smoother . P-39 is also beautiful and can land even in difficult terrain which was also important in Eastern front http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The drawback is its climbrate that is poor , P-39 is also useless above 6000m lacking a high alt supercharger , stall tendency , difficult cannon shooting in deflection against small targets like Bf109's with a slow rate of fire , average acceleration , vulnerable engine behind the pilot , rollrate poor at lower speeds , awful rear visibility on later models , in real life they had little problems of engine smoke in the cockpit and balance of the plane so they had to put weight in front among other things , but in this plane this is important to play well as a team to overcome its biggest drawback that is its climbrate , when you use good tactics and show solidarity , a group of P-39 can be very effective against any plane the opposition can field , it lacks speed against the Focke Wulf , but is probably their most dangerous opponent on the Eastern Front and you are proud when you manage to do well in it , because it's a difficult plane to master , tactical mistakes or being too aggressive on the control at low speeds (stalls) are punished more severely in a Airacobra than in let's say a Spitfire or 109 or Zero and it's a large plane so an easier target in deflection shots , but still i love this plane and we must not forget that the highest scoring Allied pilot against the Luftwaffe was a Soviet P-39 pilot and their rules for awarding air victories were very strict http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
