View Full Version : Anyone else notice Altair's hood looks like a bird of prey?

I haven't seen any other threads on this and I'm wondering if I'm the first one to notice that they made Altair's hood look totally like a raptor's head or some sort of bird of prey like an eagle's head or a falcon's or hawk's.

On the site, you can kind of see it in the Downloads section under Screensavers. I've also seen it in some poster's sigs--Tobbe777 has a sig based on that picture where it's easy to see (not his avatar so much as his sig). Plus, you can see it on the E3 2K6 Trailer (the first video on the official site). To see it in a larger picture, go here:

http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?fs=1&id=2581

Find the E3 2K6 Trailer (or HD version), click on it, and you'll see what I mean at 0:49 minutes and at 1:20 minutes. Notice also the bird of prey both at the beginning of the video and at the end.

I'm fairly new to this forum, so if this has already been talked to death and I just missed it, then just ignore this post. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That would be the eagle connection...

Oooops someone hasn't looked much at this forum and facts...:P

And what is a "Bird of prey"???
You mean like a bird that hunts other birds/animals for eating??

I had also noticed it and I don't know where, but I remember I read something about the team designing Altair's coat and some of his movements in such a way so that they would resemble an eagle. I think it was in one of those Dev Diaries. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Ah.... Where's the "eagle connection" talked about? I must have missed it. I've recently watched the dev diaries and I don't remember it from there. Can someone point out where it's at? The all-knowing Saudus, maybe?

I looked through the first 3 pages of the threads and I hadn't seen this talked about. It's why I posted. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

And yes, a "bird of prey" is just like "a bird that hunts other birds/animals for eating." In fact, it is that, pretty much exactly. (Oooops someone hasn't worked much on their vocabulary!...:P)

EDIT: Okay. Googled it and found out that "Altair" is the Arabic word for "eagle" or "flying eagle," for those Arabically and apparently AC-challenged like myself. Do we know anything more about this "eagle connection," or is that it so far?

Yes I did noticed, but not in the movie. I first time noticed in IGN picture page. As mnhthiessen mentioned that "Altair" is arabic word for "eagle", I didn't knew it before, thanks mnhthiessen for letting me know<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Cool. Thanks, Tobbe777, for posting and letting us see your sig. I just love how you can see the beak and even the eyes of the eagle in that hood. Might not be as easy to see in actual gameplay, but just the way they pulled it off is cool.

agreed, its an amazing idea for movies, but when im playing the game i really dont my character to look to much like a bird. It doesnt really fit his image. sure birds of prey are swift and silent when hunting. But in modern times the eagle represents freedom and patroitism, not swift silent killers.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The little guy with the "LOL!" sign creeps me out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

If they were going to go for a "bird of prey" look, then why'd they make him realistically stocky instead of more slender? A mesomorph instead of an ectomorph?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Why? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif he's harmless http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Well when I think of eagle or hawk or any other bird of prey - it suggests power - I think it parallels a mesomorph rather than an ectomorph; the mesomorph is more muscular, radiates power, etc. - if I were to compare a bird to an ectomorph, I would think of something suggestive, like a flamingo or some other very thin and slender bird.

Bird of prey make me think of power as well. I think it matchs the fact that Altair can access top of building like a bird would do.

And the fly-by attack of a bird (like the eagle) make me think of Altair's way to catch and kill someone before this person even realise its presence...

Since you sound like you know what you're talking about, I'm sure you're right.

I guess what I'm still wondering about, is what the sites below say. The first is the Google listing for "Altair eagle arabic", and the rest are sites listed just from that first page. I suppose they could all be wrong... however.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-...=altair+eagle+arabic (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-23,GGLG:en&q=altair+eagle+arabic)

www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/sow/altair.html (http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/%7Ekaler/sow/altair.html)

www.souledout.org/nightsky/summertriangle/summertriangle.html (http://www.souledout.org/nightsky/summertriangle/summertriangle.html)

en.mimi.hu/astronomy/altair.html

Actually, I'm thinking we may have an issue of dialect. "Altair" may literally mean "the bird," but for some people--in some dialects and in some instances--may specifically be taken for "eagle" or "flying eagle." It's just really hard to believe all these sites have it wrong; the Google listing of different sites connecting Altair to "eagle" goes on for pages and pages, so there has to be something to it.

You're right, it is probably just dialects. Arabic has roughly 30 kinds http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif. Fable is a native speaker, though, so I'd trust him. I remember my Arabic professor last week going over the Taa and writing out examples... I was one happy cookie when he wrote Tair http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif He explained it as generally something that flies.

The name "Altair" is Arabic for "the flyer", from the phrase ??? ?????? an-nasr a?-???ir "the flying eagle". The spelling "Atair" is also used frequently.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Ok, listen...

The "The" in English is "Al" in Arabic.

ex: Tair - Bird
Al-tiar (or Altair) - The Bird

But in Arabic we sometimes ignore the "l" in "Al" only in the pronounciation, we do write it but we don't pronounce it. Why? to ease the job for the tongue.

So when do you do that? when the letter after the "Al" is NOT one of the following:

?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?

So in the case of "Altair" the letter after the "Al" is "?" which isn't above.

So the happy news are, what you called "spelling" above is not spelling of the word, it is the spelling of the way you pronounce the word...http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif DO NOT curse me, curse those who made those rules! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

And no, I can't write the way you pronounce those Arabic letters above since there aren't any letters in English corresponding them.

How about a thread for this? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif "The Arabic thread, enter at own risk!" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Okay! So to recap!

Altair means "the bird." Some people take it to mean "the eagle" or "the flying eagle," for whatever reason.

Ubisoft and AC are using the eagle angle, clearly connecting the assassin Altair with the eagle. (Look! Back on topic!)

They have an eagle flying at the beginning and end of the first trailer. Altair's hood is made to look like an eagle's head and beak. And even though Altair literally means "the bird" it's also been taken to mean "eagle."

As far as why Ubisoft would decide to connect Altair the assassin with the eagle (or other bird of prey), that makes some sense to me. An eagle searches from high above for his prey; when he finds it he swoops down and kills it. Altair goes to the rooftops and basically does the same thing. It's a swift and sure kill; you don't know where it's coming from, and rarely does something escape.

So we know "Altair" means "the bird," but I think we know it's not a chicken or a sparrow in this case. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Well, sometimes we do it in english. How many British accents fully pronounce the 'r' in something like 'banker'? Yet they always write it out as 'banker'. Or with a southern US accent, someone might not fully pronounce a 'g', but will typically write 'something'. So in Arabic someone might not sound out the 'l', but they write it out. That makes sense, right?

Oh, and that string of letters Fable wrote out are:

(?) - m - y/ii - q - 'a - f - kh - w/uu - k - j - H - gh - b - a/u

He's just too lazy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
