I mean the single player stock long campaign that comes with the game. You play for the Finns.

If you keep flying long emough, you are assigned to 109's.

I would like to compare notes on this campaign and about flying this plane offline.

Have you gotten to the end of this campaign? It sure takes a while, but is quite satisfying really. At first I thought the Brewster was a joke, but it really grew on me. It may be my favorite now.

When I first got FB, tried a few flight and got hooked. Flew the campaign a few times. Back then, the I-16 was uber and hard to bring down. Still one of my favorites for night missions.

When I first heard of this plane, I too thought it was a joke. But it ain`t, I`ve seen real WWII pics of em. And yes, they fly very nicely.

Glad to hear from you guys. Now I want to go again, trying it with the new patch.By the way, the winter missions after being assigned 109's I remember as being particularly beautiful. Missed the Brewster though.

Did anyone run in to a string of missions toward the middle when you can't seem to meet the enemy? I had to use the map to get to them, as we never seemed to get close.

Yes, the I-16's were hard to bring down; overshooting was a real problem. I used combat flaps to help.

Such a stable gun platform, the Brewster. It really helped the aiming. Not the fastest plane, but predictable and very maneuverable.

It would be interesting to try against the new Zero, don't you think?

Campaigns are a great way of getting to know your aircraft. I use it all the time. However, online is the real test of all your skills.

In full-real rooms that is /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

About the Brewster campaign: The map appears to be very bad for my framerate and in one of the first missions, you'll have to take on Pe-8 bombers at night. Those bombers where so close that you couldn't get enough altitude and they still where about 1000m above me, when we first met. Together with the sniper machine gunners on the Pe-8, this mission was doomed. I did try several times but, didn't got any succes and I was happy with the result of just pressing the "apply" button on the end of the mission. I never gave the Buffalo much of a glance really.

I try MiG-3's, that's a crappy plane also /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Disagree on full real. Consider on line unrealistic; too much crazy flying and comments. The true test and most realism is offline, IMO.

I think the Brewster is a good plane. Wings come off the Mig3 too easily.

Not much to add other than I'm glad my PC is up to it. It is fun, surprisingly.

When I first got FB I flew the Brewster campaign. It was great fun, and I was averaging a kill per mission on full real. I even took down a Pe-8 with my B-239! When the 109s were assigned I found I had developed habits of a turn fighter, and I was uncompetitive in the 109 - always blacking out in high-G turns etc.

But it was a great campaign, and whenever I try DF servers online, I usually fly a Brewster, just for fun. It is great to take down a human P-47 in a Brewster - a real buzz!

Have fun!

I love the brewster, im flying a Brewster Campagin right now. My current record is 80 kills and 30 ground kills, and ive been shot down 4 or 5 times. This plane is a very good gun platform. Those .50's really rip up VVS planes, and soft ground targets. I can rip wings off of I-16's with ease and have plenty of ammo to go on the deck. Most of my kills are I-16's and SB's. Im nearing the end of the 1941 campaign. I hope I get promoted to Squadron Leader by than. Overall Brewster is a great early war plane.

Like minded souls! Good luck with the Brewster on and offline.

It's easy to forget that others are enjoying this too; good to be able to compare notes. The campaign is very long, but that may be part of the appeal. I'll have to admit that my Finnish Avatar has been killed and resurrected several times in the course of playing through it.

I'm assuming then that you guys didn't run into any vectoring problems in intercepting the enemy while on autopilot. I wonder if this sort of thing can crop up due to subtle flaws in a particular game installation. Hard to say.

Have you fellows tried Ian Boys Red 9 campaign? I can easily imagine that this would be good fun all over again if re edited for the Brewster. If anyone knows how and does this modification, please post it for us to try.

Ian Boys is a real craftsman of nice little campaigns. He is a true enthusiast. If you haven't yet had the pleasure, try one of his offerings as well.

Concerning those Pe-8's you tackle in the 1st mission.

You often loose the other members of your flight as the way AI attacks bombers is ahhhh...I'll be polite and call it foolish /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif It can't be helped but you don't have to emulate your brave but foolish mates.

Climb as high as you can while keeping them in site during the long sweeping turn they make(if your lucky AA might even get 1 or 2) After they complete that long turn they begin a slow decent and your altitude will allow you to do the same while gaining distance on them.

Just as in any bomber attack quick slashing attacks from above and then zoom back to altitude. Since the patch those .50's make quick work of the wings with accurate gunnery.

Ahhh, the Brewster campaign. That's a beauty. The Brewster is very well matched against the 1941 VVS planeset, especially now that the I-16 isn't uber. The Brewster dives well for the BnZ and turns well if it gets sticky down low. ANd the firepower is excellent, with .50 cal and 20mm to choose from.

I only have 512MB RAM, and I can handle the Finnish map, go for it !

Brewster campaign is indeeed nice, and I love the power of the .50cals now. Though makes you wonder what kind of tactics you employ.. since I too fly turn fighting the I16s and Chaikkas, completely the opposite tactics applied by the FAF . /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Then again If you would be outnumbered 50 to one I would B&Z in Brewster too /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

This campaign gives a good picture how it was in real life when Finnish pilots were fighting against many times larger numbers of enemy fighters and bombers. Dogfights by 20 to 40 Soviet planes against a flight of 4 to 6 Brewsters were not uncommon over the Gulf of Finland.

Apart from the obvious skills of the top Finnish aces it must have been of some help to be so drastically outnumbered. There were plenty of targets as most anything in the sights would be enemies. Also the Soviets must have hard time trying to identify so few opponents from the huge number of their own planes.

Brewsters (44 pcs) were in sevice of Finnish Airforce from March 1940 to 1948.

Top scorers in Brewster:
Capt. Hans H. Wind (39), WO E. Ilmari Juutilainen (34), Maj. Jorma Karhunen (26)
All gained more later while flying Me109.

Brewster operational victories/losses during Continuation War 1941-44:
478/23 = 20,78 kills per plane.

Nice link to more info about FAF planes:

By the way, Brewsters were nicknamed "Pylly-Waltteri" by the pilots who thought it looked so ugly. "Butt Walther" in english.

Many thanks to you for the very interesting information and link. That site is very interesting, with much research being possible to do there. It really add to the delicate sense of immersion to understand the context of the Brewster Campaign in Forgotten Battles.

Now I really must replay this overlooked gem. The new patch and ATI 3.10 drivers demand it.

Brewster campaign is nice, but...
after Patching to 1.21 my 1941 Campaign has crashed after I competed my 18th mission, 19th mission was never created.
Very Long missions are bigger that 18missions I think.

quite cool that LeLv34 is stationed at Lappeenranta a few times http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but sadly we don´t have the town of Lappeenranta on the map.
landscape a little flat, but otherwise ok.

btw, I´m flying this with a xp1800+, GF4ti4200 64MB and 128MB PC133MHz RAM.
"short" loading times http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif NOT hehe LOL

The DCG now includes a Finnish campaign over the gulf in 2.40. And we've got a 3-day weekend coming up in the States...

With the patch it's well worth playing over this campaign again IMO. Helps against the I-16's, so you have a chance at a better score.

What a pleasure it is to fly this one. it is even better now, try it and let us know how it is going.

I have compiled about 30 minutes of lo-fi wavs containing genuine war time music and speech from 1939-44 Finnish radio broadcasts. There is even a interview of Sibelius included as well as live broadcast where the reporter gets attacked by two Soviet planes and interviews a sergeant who got a machine gun bullet through his arm during the attack.

When placing these files in Samples/Music/InFlight folder it is possible to simulate pilots' habit to listen public radio during transit. The music is quite different from American big band jazz of the same era.

I don't have a website now but can email this zip package if anyone playing Finnish campaign or missions is interested.

Some great FAF history links. Sites in english.

Here's a couple of variations for flying the Brewster on the Allied side, both realistic and a bit fictitious:

1. I built a Hurri IIb campaign in DCG for late 1940 cross-channel missions against E-4s, E-7s and 110Cs and ground targets (Douglas Bader called strafing Vichy French ground forces "Peasant Hunting." I love it).

Anyway, I tossed in a couple of Brewsters. The RAF had Brewsters but only in SE Asia, so it's not totally correct, but they do very well against the Emils.

2. You can set up a DCG campaign in SE Asia (Malaya and Burma) with RAF Brewsters or Midway campaign with USMC Brewsters that are historically correct (The Marines on Midway flew Brewsters, all of which were shot down). Any map you like will do; I use Crimea for Malaya/Burma and the island map for Midway. The only opponent available is the A6M5, a 1943 version Zero instead of the correct A6M2, but the Brewster can give the A6M5 a good fight.

3. I haven't tried it but you could fly Dutch Brewsters against Zeros as well, the Dutch also fought the Japanese in SE Asia and they flew Brewsters.

The Brewster is short on power but very agile and the 4x.50s are good early war guns. If you like Turn & Burn, this Bud's for you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There are excellent RAF and US Navy and USMC and even Dutch skins available for the Brewster at IL-2 skins.

Contrary to popular Finland opinion, the Brewster was not endemic to Finland (although it must be said they did much better with it than anyone else http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

And if you haven't tried DCG, you should (free plug for Paul http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

I fly the Finnish campaign more than the others. Since I am a mediocre pilot, I enjoy the Brewster, even if it is slow and I am constantly getting lost! I have only 1 kill so far SB-2. Long live the mediocre planes! I also have long periods without sighting a ruskie in this campaign.

I liked the campaign a lot, but I found the Buffalo a hard plane to master. It is a bit like "driving a train on one rail", as my pilot friend described it. I am currently flying the BoB-campaign with the Hurricane, which I find a very pleasant plane to fly. The Finish campaign had a cind of desperate underdog feeling to it, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Fly friendly!
