quick question....do the different tracer ammunition colors signify anything? i'm thinking along the lines of AA...i realize that red=.50 cal. does anyone know what size calibre the other rounds are (ie: purple, yellow, white, blue)? thanks in advance

Not sure if it really has something to do with calibers or just armies preferences...Red=american, Green=russian, etc...

yeah, i thought of that...however, i've also seen blue and white tracers coming from US CVs so i'm assuming it does have something to do w/ the size of the guns

The color of the tracer is dependant on the chemical used. Also, I think certain colors/chemicals were used with specific types of ammo as well to distinguish the type of round.

I don't have an exact link to tracer colors/chemicals used in WWII, but this link should help you understand how tracers work:

I think I read somewhere -maybe here -recently that some tracer round have different trajectory to "ordinary" bullets and so may be misleading....

Tracer rounds may have a different weight than other rounds, and therefore slightly different muzzle velocities and deceleration curves.

However, the difference is not nearly as much as it's made out to be, and would only affect aiming at extreme ranges (and there, made largely irrelevant due to dispersion). Other types of rounds, like HE, AP, and incendiary, will also have different weights.

If you get "Il2 Wingman", (which is a really handy program by the way), it lists, amonng many other things, the type of guns on each aircraft and what the tracer color is.

Also, check the 'Weapons' link in this site (http://free-st.htnet.hr/dvd/), it tells the colour of every tracer round (and other gunnery data) for every weapon.

Good and handy lists of Il-2-related armament in that site, plus the Cockpit Reference page http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
