I don't like using comms. I would rather enjoy the game in peace.

Besides, voice comms lag the server. No voice comms and no skin download I always say.

We use Ventrilo, and by far it is the best comms program out there right now. We regularly have someone from another squad around on our server. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Use comms nearly all the time. Ventrilo is my favorite.

Comms add a whole new level to an online game and I use them every chance I get. Sadly, that's not very often.

I've used comms lately on VEF flights (a certain squad-member has been gracious enough to invite me to a few).
But on DF servers - no. What's the point really? People rarely cooperate there anyway.

Our Squad has it's own 10 channel RW server, we use it in combination with 'My Tuner' so that we can switch to other channels when needed.
We use the Resounding version of RW not the awful Gamespy version.

I fly VOW with my squad, so it's an essential. Teamspeak is the weapon of choice. I only use comms with other members of the squad, not the great unwashed, I must confess. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyone who has not tried Ventrillo should. It is head and shoulders above BC and TS.

I use comms always, but just with my Squad. Using it with other people you don`t know is tricky.

I tried it a while ago, if you`re lucky you`ll get good comms with strangers, other times you get kids who just won`t shut up. As soon as a bogey appears they blow up your speakers by screaming! And it all goes to pot. Never bothered after that.

Better to work with people who have some control, usually your known squad mates.

I can't understand how you can be a wingman properly or work as a team without using comms; typing is just too slow and takes your hands off the controls for the duration.
Also on long journeys, it makes such a difference to chat and have a laugh on the way in. For training-flights and helping a new recruit to set up the game and other software, comms are completely invaluable.
We rent a dedicated TS server, and it is a great meeting place too; used in conjunction with MSN/ICQ it is really easy to get games organised with your squad-mates.

Comms, and being in a squad, improve this sim by another 100% in my opinion.

BTW, due to Lock-on being released, alot of 9thAWACS are not playing FB at the moment, so we are looking for more FB players. We are a pretty casual FB squad; no strict times to train/play. We accept beginners as long as you learn a little and practice before participating in the online wars. We're registered in VOW (VVS) and VEF (OKL), or you can just dogfight if you want. I use them with my squad mates but not many others. Sometimes in a VEF or VOW mission I will too if invited. Problem with comms is most people just chat away. It can be a little distracting.

Ventrilo's sound quality far exceeds Teamspeaks', and it uses fewer resources. Quite a few BPs would get constantly dropped from the TS server (myself included). This never happens with Ventrilo.

As far as the philosophy of comms...

There is no way team tactics can be utilized with out them. Period.

I personally NEVER go on comms with anyone but my Pig mates... We say what needs t be said and move along...No idle chit chat.

I use TS used to use RW Won't pay for ventrillo since TS is so good free. I host a TS server for the squad but If you are flying and want to wing with myself or one of the other 131st we will invite you in. We have the first channel set to a low codec so once you get in and know the Password you won't want to stay therefor long. But once in one of the registerd members can drag you to a room with a higher codec with much better sound quality. It is on a pentium 3 667 cpu with 512 pc133 ram and cable. It does nothing but set out in the garage and do nothing but TS so it works quite well. Actually it is a mobo and componants screwed to the wall LOL I used to use it for a componant testing board. But I got a smaller one for that now.

Ventrillo is also free for non commercial applications, unless you want to use Ventrilo's own dedicated servers. The server application uses hardly any resources 'cept a bit of bandwidth, so it's no problem to run.

Hmm when I downloaded the server software it told me in the readme that it would expire in 30 days and I would loose all my admin rights to the server "My server" So I deleted it before testing it out. I do have and use the client for Ventrillo when I meet up with someone I don't know that wants to use it instead.

We use Teamspeak and its a superb program and its free.
I compared Ventrilo and i must say i prefer TS by far.
Its extremely easy to set up Servers with complex structures, you can change codecs, channels etc. on the fly as you just need it and it uses on my comp(athlon XP2600, 1gig ram) very little resources (about 2% cpu time with about 8 to 10 people in and some of them talking). I can fly without any noticeable framedrops or performance degradations while hosting TS server at the same time.
The sound quality is just great and depends entirely on the codec, i prefer the speex 9.3 codec, very good sound, little bandwidth. Ventrilo has about the same performance qualitywise, but is in no way better on sound, rather a bit to the contrary i d say. I havent really checked out how versatile the userhandling is in V., but on TS it has everything you might ever want from a server, you can register user and give each and everyone exactly defined rights, you can have different codecs for different user classes, etc. etc..
AND: TS is the most stable program i have ever encountered on a windows computer. I remember the horrible RW ! Bluescreens, random freezes, lost connections and so forth, oh my ! TS never ever crashed even once ( i am hosting it regularly) and mostly its still functioning if the rest of the OS is already staggering or if FB crashed ..

So pls dont believe ElLaurens, he just doesnt know what he is talking about...(he is right though that Ventrilo is also quite good)

Yours,

TX-Squadron uses TeamSpeak for squad communications. Our SOP is to stay on comms even if you are the only TX player online...that way if another TXer arrives you don't have to exit the game to get on comms and the other guy doesn't have to enter your game to make contact.

No comms = no fun for me, flying with a squadmate is absolutely the way to go.

Comms are great. It took my squad mates a while to convince me to use them, but once I did I wished I had started earlier. I had fears of resourse usage, lag, etc. But I have had zero problems along these lines, and I use dial-up too. It really adds to the game in so many ways.

Ventrilo is FREE http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif . It is a much smaller program that uses hardly any CPU. You can password your rooms and channels like you can in TS. Whatever you can do in TS you can do in ventrilo. But better with ventrilo http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Better with V ?? Hahaha!Lol.. Not true Mc Carruther,

your post made me curious so i downloaded V again ( i had already deleted it some time ago)and checked it out and i have to tell you: The userinterface sucks! The server can do about everything it should and some more, except that its a horrible hackertools frontend thing with typing stuff which reminds me of DOS times. Even reading the server htm is a pain..
client is also primitive...
Well, who likes it...but try to set up a few new channels or change codecs on the fly....its eeassy with TS, try on V...laughable...
i prefer to give a few Kbytes of ram to TS (4496 Kbytes to be exact)for convenience...of course if you run Voicecomm on a 128MBYte P3 you should probably go for V...
CPU usage seems to be about the same using similar codecs and number of users. Bandwidth depends entirely on Codec and nr of users on both..there is no difference between them...

Anyway, both are usable, different taste i d say, who likes the comfort takes TS, who likes hacking V...

A friend of mine has been running the current version server app for about 4 months with no probs. I think the 30 days applies to a free trial on the Ventrilo run public servers.

Might be right Tully I'll have to give it a look again. Doubt I change over though since TS is fully funtional and I have Dailuppers on it all the time and flying to boot. But just in case It will be fun to mess about with.
