I use them, although I see the dot before I can see the icon. Can't see why I should not use them!

Thx for the reply Jasko. Who's next?

I'd say use them, but be careful in HOW you design them.

If you just use the "10km, billboard size, full information" icons, I'd agree that's a bit much, and arcadish.

But, if you can design a good set of icons for friendly and enemy, based on some idea of realism, then you'll likely enjoy the results of a good tradeoff between realism and in-game experience.

My favorite scheme for icons is:

Foes: TYPE only, visible from 3 - 5km.
Friends NAME, RANGE (and perhaps type), visible to 5km.

The additional info represents training, radio contact, general knowledge of the situation.

I don't use the black "neutral" icons because of the color: they're all but invisible against forests and in late-day lighting conditions, making them all but useless. But, you might think differently, so experiment with ranges at which neutral black turns red or blue.

Sometimes I do sometimes I don't, I don't really care if they are used or not. Except what Stiglr said about having em at about 9.00, I can't stand when the distance is set that far. I like to have em around 2 or 3, thats a good distance IMO. It's nice to have em when u are low level and can't see em very well in the trees, but thats kinda cheatin, http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Depends. If you want lots of action? Use them. If you want to spend most of your flight trying to find the enemy. Don't use them.

Icons I dont mind.... its those stinkin arrows I hate. IMO the arrows take a lot of the skill out of fighting in this sim.... you wind up flying the arrows.. not the bandit... just follow the arrows.....

I don't see any arrows in the cockpit Bear..http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you fly full difficulty you get used to no icons and you get better at IDing other aircraft. Makes sense right? You can ID aircraft by thier tracers, AAA bursts, size, manuevers, and markings, and many other tricks. You can use the binoculars too(Page Down right?).

No icons is just another switch to throw. If you don't think this is realistic read some books fighter pilots wrote. We had Spits joining flights of 109s, 109s joining flights of Spits, Thunderbolts shooting thunderbolts and FW190s shooting FW190s. NOt to mention all the craft shot down by friendly AAA. This is a real big part of realism, IDing aircraft.

I like the servers that are dead full difficulty, and enforce aircraft having correct markings on them. Doesn't get any better than that..........

I only fly offline but I do like lots of action so I use them. Maybe if I had Track IR I wouldn't, I don't know. But I'm challenged with even 'veteran' AI and distance indicators and a half hour mission is plenty fun. It doesn't get old.

Interesting to read. Hey Stiglr, how did you change the icon type? What you use sounds pretty good to me.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
Happy trails.

I fly how I feel at the moment.... I have no problem going on a server with limited icons and a closed pit... or no icons and an open pit.... I will fly with friends who go the other way just to hang but I am not a fan.. I dont like the arrows.. but I am not so elitist as to forget about friends because they dont fly like I do. Offline I dont use icons or hud... I have a flex pit and speedbar that I usually keep closed and off.. but the option is there for me.. I will always use externals... the sim is just too good looking not to IMO of course.... So yeah Baldie... when I can look around my pit using TIR (doesnt work well for me in an open pit), talk to my wingmen using VAC (or live wing on comms or combo of both when in coops), and use my FFB/HOTAS/Pedals setup keeping my hands and feet busy...... to methat's immersion.. now I dont know what your view of immersion is.. but its yours and you are entitled to it. And yeah Buzz you are right.. there are no arrows in the pit...... thats why I prefer servers with closed pits if icons are on.

I use a bit of both, though most of the online hosts I choose select no icons.

I think I'm going to have to try them out again, mindless sheep that I am. If anyone has info on how to change the icons to something less obtrusive please let me know.
Cheers.

I've been using the cockpit view for a couple of years now... tried cockpit off recently to see how carrier landings would be.... mine are awful usually and it did help, but I find it difficult to get situational awareness now without a cockpit view....also get vertigo....ha ha
I usually have speedbar set as on, but with a key assigned to toggle from kph/knots/mph/off and keep it off until i get really lost...
icons are also on a key to toggle, but I only use the coloured range one if I use it at all...
as I only fly off-line, i don't use icons if it is a mission/campaign i've made as I know what is what and who is who....
i just used icons for the first time in ages in the AVG campaign
I don't have TrackIR.... enjoyed Newview, but didn't like the way it wouldn't do a full circle in external/camera views so took it out

As Bearcat says, "it depends..." The problem for me isn't dots, it's a/c identification. In a big free for all, with icons off, I seem to spend too much time lining up and getting close...to friendlies. Aaaargh! But in a small fight, no icons.

Just installed TIR3. I hope that will help when I get used to it. In the meantimes, icons on offline. When online, in no icon servers, last rites.

Yeah, I, too, spend most of my time in dogfights lining up on my own team http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif. Having just learned that you can toggle icons (seen the command a dozen times but never realised there were different types - that was all i needed)I think i have a found a happy medium. Coloured distance markers only. The downside is that I have already caught myself using the icons for range when trying to get a firing solution which is a bit naughty really. Did make me realise that I had got pretty good at gauging range in the last few months http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif, shame about the actual gunnery though...
