I wonder how it takes off with the bottom plane. Or just the whole take-off procedure come to think of it.

That abomination of an aircraft would be very satisfying to shoot at.

LOL Taylortony, you don't REALLY want to try and fly that thing do you..?

Actually, now that I think of it, it might be fun..!!!

Must say that it looks more like a barnstormers' trick than an experimental aircraft, but then again aircraft designers toyed with the idea of parasite fighters from the 1930's till the late 1950's and the last ones were the Americans with the B-36 and the Goblin AFAIK

Id fly it if we had it. I dont think that the plane on the bottom could support all that weight on takeoff....Then again....Balsa wood is pretty light....

It was called FICON, and it used the B-36 and one of the second gen. jet fighters. I can't remember off the top of my head.

Does anyone know of any parasite fighter projects outside of the US and Russia?

That plane has a special launchpad - like a ramp at about 40 degrees which allows for the bottom plane to stay attached. I have to agree this is a crazy design - but what it really was - was a mobile airfield of the late 1930s. With the power of the Tb-3 the smaller planes would have a much longer range during combat missions.

That's just a different model of the Zveno; SPB was one of the latest ones.

Yes, you are right: there was a project involving an F-84 Thunderstreak, I seem to remember..!

I cannot think of any parasite fighter project outside the US or USSR, though.

Just an observation, but if that boom rotates up and forward, that bottom plane just might have enough clearance to tuck underneath the nose..... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

The SPB in AEP is modelled correctly and completely. It's just a variant that only featured 2 underwing I-16s. And it's this particular version only that was known as "Zveno".

The TB-3 version shown in the pictures above with the 5 - 6 planes on it is a variant of it's own.

Don't forget the Short Mayo composite. OK, it wasn't a fighter parasite, but was still very impressive. Have a look:
