Apologies if I missed an existing discussion, but are there any plans to model night fighters in Il-2? I refer specifically to those aircraft, such as the P-61 Black Widow (US) and Bf-110G-4, which were equipped with radar (albeit primitive!). It sure seems like it would make for interesting gameplay.

Too many bugs to work out with night flying already.

Then you have to design new aircraft...

Then an entirely new system for the radar.

That's a lot of work.

And there will be only one more patch for il-2 (4.09) before the game is done. Anything done with Il2 is extra time. The developer doesn't want to slow the progress of the next game; Storm of War: Battle of Britain.

Storm of War is supposed to feature ground based radar in the initial release but I did read a while back that Oleg would very much like to do nightfighters at some point. He and I think most people here would like to see that done properly...so a properly functioning air intercept radar of the types used in WWII would be fantastic to simulate. Obviously the game engine needs to be programmed with that in mind...IL-2 isn't but the new game apparently is supposed to be.

He mentioned that real ww2 radar was such a highly specialised task that it would not translate into the game. Instead I think he intended things to go more towards an AI crewman who would vector you to the target etc. Sure gets my vote http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I don't know when the black box war with airborne radar even started but I doubt highly it was
during the BoB.

There were other black boxes to vector bombers to target though pinpoint they weren't and I've
only seen German examples explained. German radar was superior by mid-war, enough so that the
British sent Commandos in to capture one. Probably a shorter wavelength system but I'm not sure.

SOW should have listening posts as well, the same game mechanics can probably do both.

I wonder if they even had shielded spark plug wires back then? TaylorTony and Crumpp might know.

I recently read the war diary of a Whitley pilot. He said that as they crossed the enemy coast on the way home at night, they would cut the engines and glide across to escape the sound detectors that coordinated the flak.
